My Accutane (Sotret) Experience

week one comes to a close

I plan to document my experience over the next six months so it would be impolite for me to not introduce myself.

My name is Nicole. I am 26 years old and have moderate acne (it's was tough to type that - it made it a definite reality). I've never had porcelain smooth skin but up until about a year ago I could easily get away with not wearing any makeup on a day-to-day basis. Then... it happened. It started w/ some rough, under-the-skin bumps on my cheeks and temples that migrated to my neck, chest, and back. A Tazorac, Duac, and anti-biotic treatment later those small bumbs became cysts and wouldn't go away. I tried everything from over-the-counter drug store meds and washes to holistic products to home-made remedies, to fasting... nothing helped. My dermatologist finally recommended accutane.

I am a vegan and have a very clean, non-toxic, organic diet so you can imagine my hesitancy to take any drugs much less a generic accutane! but after careful consideration i concluded it was the lesser of two evils and after a couple of blood tests got my first Rx filled.

Tomorrow will mark the end of my first week. I don't see any noticeable difference in the skin on my face - positive or negative - nor do I have any symptoms of dry skin but I have noticed that the acne on my back is considerably more severe than it was a week ago and seems to be spreading! Hopefully this is part of the process. I have been a little irritable the last couple of days but being a woman i'm used to that happening on a regular basis :)

Still, I remain optimistic and look forward to a more progressive blog!

xo, nicole
