Starting month 5

[/b]I have been on accutane for a little over 4 months now. My skin has really cleared. I haven't had many new pimples (actually 1 or 2 in the last month). My face still has the red marks where pimples used to be, and I hope that will clear also. I am starting my 5th month on accutane and the plan is to go 8 months total. Let's see, side effects so far have been: dry lips, dry skin (face included), dry eyes (not all the time), accutane rash on hands and arms ( really noticed the rash this week). The supplies I can't do without are: aquaphor (lips), CeraVe lotion (face and body), Vanicream cleansing bar (face and body), Systane (eye drops). I am still on 30 mg Sotret (accutane) twice a day. For anyone out there who is just starting out on accutane and feels that it is not working or is making things worse, stick with it. Last month I was ready to quit. I told my derm that my skin has never looked worse. I was depressed (over my skin not sucidal) and angry. He told me that by the end of the month I would notice a big difference. He was right. I can't wait to see more improvement.

Starting 4th month

I just got back from my dermatology appointment. My derm has increased my accutane to 60mg (30mg twice a day). He also kept me on the pred for two more weeks. I don't like the pred because it makes me gain weight. I really hope that my face starts clearing soon. I have been having major breakouts along my jawline that won't go away. I told my derm that I am getting very fusterated with this treatment. I hope with the increased dose things will start working out. I'll keep you updated.

Beginning 3rd month

I am beginning my 3rd month on accutane (sotret). I had my derm appointment today and now I am on 40 mg once a day. I have developed a rash on my hands. My derm say's its accutane rash and prescribed a lotion. I have been having major breakouts on both sides of my jawline. The pimples won't heal and they bleed whenever I wash my face. I have been prescribed an oral antibiotic (zithromax) and a steroid (prednisone) to help with this. I hope it works my face is so itchy and raw. My derm said that after month 4 I should be pimple free. I'm half way there YEAH! It's hard to believe it is possible when I look at my face now and see how awful it looks. My lips are still very dry and I apply aquaphor every half hour. I had one really bad bloody nose, but I haven't had one since. I had a horrible time being on the Depo shot (birth control), so now I am back on the pill. Anyone considering the Depo shot be careful and research it. I pick up all my prescriptions tonight so I'm really hoping everything gets better.

things are looking up

I think I turned a corner with my breakouts. My skin has started to clear up a bit. I having been using the antibiotic lotion my derm prescribed twice a day (moring and night) and things are looking bettter. I have noticed my lips are a bit drier than usual, I keep lots of aquaphor handy. The pimples that I have are healing and flat ( not raised and pus filled). It makes them easier to cover with makeup. I have to be careful when I have dry skin on my face. I tried to peel it off and have ripped big pieces of skin off. This is very painful. I have to remember to use lots of lotion. I hope things keep getting better from here.

Starting month 2

I just got back from my dermatology appointment. My derm upped my dose to 30mg once a day. I was on 20mg once a day. I asked him why I am not taking it twice a day like most people do. He said he likes to start slow to let my body slowly get used to the meds. He says that's how they dose in Europe. I noticed by face gets red when I get out of the shower or when I am exercising and takes a while to go back to normal. My derm says this might be rosacia. I have never had this before I started accutane. I got a perscription for Metrolotion (.75%). I hope this helps with the redness. I also have white spots on both my arms. I was told that my skin is not producing pigment in those spots (wierd). I am supposed to apply lotion to my arms as much as I can. My skin is still breaking out quite a bit. My derm said by month 4 I should be clear. It's a long time to wait when my skin is so out of control. I already made it one month, why not 3 more? I am a little nervous to get my perscriptions because I have to pay for it myself, my insurance isn't covering it. Let you know how it goes. If anyone else is on month 2, I would love to hear how your progress is going.

Finished one month

I took my 30th pill last night. I had forgotten to take my pill twice this month, but I guess accutane stays in you system for 9 days so my derm said it's fine. So I have one month done and I have had a lot of flare ups this month. I guess that's the initial breakout stage. I have a derm appointment on October 4th. I am wondering if my dose will change since I am on 20mg once a day. My lips are not as dry as they used to be. My skin is not as dry as it was, it's kind of dewey. My breakouts are mostly on my neck, jawline and around my mouth. I am hoping going into month 2 things will get better. I'll post again after my derm appointment.

Day 20

Day 20. My face is a mess. I am really broken out. I have 3 cystic type pimples on my right lower cheek. Usually cysts do not turn into white heads for me, but these are doing just that. They are really red and painful one day and the next they are white and full of pus. These are not going away (Aarg)! I am also breaking out around my mouth. This has not been a good week. My hair is really dry and I am losing more than usual. I try not to wash it everyday. My scalp is still very itchy. I have gotten a bloody nose. It does not gush blood, but if I blow my nose there is blood (gross). I think I might try a saline mist for my nose. I have noticed very dry patches of skin on my upper arms. I use cetaphil lotion on my arms to help with the dryness. I can see a lot of little white bumps under the surface of the skin on my face. They are very tiny. They are not whiteheads yet, but I'm sure they will be. Tomorrow is another day.

Seeing benefits!

I think this is day 14. I have been seeing some benefits. First of all my face is not oily at all. I used to have a very oily T-Zone (forehead, nose and chin), but now it is total dry. Dry in a good way, not peeling dry. Also my hair was always so greasy in the morning that I had to wash it every day. Now I could go days without washing it. My scalp is itchy and that is annoying, but it's not too bad. I am still having breakout, but with the antibiotic ointment I am using they seem to go away faster. I have started using Bigelow Mentha Lip Balm Stick (from Bath & Body Works) on my lips during the day. It seems to keep them moist better than Aquaphor. I still use Aquaphor at night. I'll keep you updated!

I can't believe how quickly my face is breaking out. I went from having about 5 pimples to about 15 really noticable ones. I was not expecting that so quickly. The ones that really bother me are the whiteheads. How can you not pop those? I have tried something new and I think it is helping. After I pop a whitehead I put some topical antibiotic ointment on it. This seems to help it heal faster. I just used a generic that I bought at target for around $5.00. I can feel more pimples under the skin that have not surfaced yet, I'm not looking forward to seeing them. Luckily I can somewhat cover them with makeup. My lips are quite a bit drier. I am constantly putting aquaphor on. My eyes get dry at night so I am still using the systane drops. When I see my derm in about a month I am wondering if I can get an antibiotic to help with the breakouts. That seemed to help in the past. I don't know if that's possible with accutane, but I'm going to ask anyway.

sticker shock

Ok so before I started on Accutane I had to go in to the regular doctor (G.P.) to have a physical exam and get on birth control. I just got the bill and it was $600.00. This is really adding up fast. I decided to go with the depo shot, that way I only have to go in every 3 months. One benefit is that your period stops. Since this is when I break out the most maybe it will be helpful. As far as my face is concerned I have been having major breakouts. My neck, jawline and my cheekbones are the main places. My lips and eyes are pretty dry. I am still putting clearasil on the pimples that are now forming. I haven't been overly dry on my face yet. But it's only day 6. I have started using Systane eye drops. I used this when I had Lasix eye surgery and it works great. I am hoping these new eruptions are short lived.

Day 4

I started the first pill on Friday August 31. Tonight will be day 4. So far I have had a sore back and a few new pimples. My lips have always been on the dry side, so I am not sure if I am getting dry yet. I am using aquaphor on my lips about 5 times a day. I took my pill last night 7:00 pm when I went to bed at 11:00pm I had really bad heartburn. I'm not sure if this was caused by the pill or not. I know your not supposed to lay down for 30 minutes after taking the pill for that reason. I'll see how it goes tonight.

In the beginning

I just picked up my prescription. My insurance did not cover the cost. I had to pay $218.00. I really hope this works. I take one tablet a day, so I will take the first one with dinner tonight. So it begins.

My accutane journey

Hi all! I have just gotten a prescription for Accutane 20mg. I have read quite a few blogs and am incouraged with all the positive feedback people have left. I hope to post some pictures soon. My dermatologist recommended Vanicream cleansing bar, Aquaphor healing ointment for lips and CeraVe moisturizing lotion. Has anyone used these products? I would love some feedback.
