First off, I am a 17 year old female and have suffered from awful, severely inflamed acne since I was 9. I was usually able to hide my breakouts decently with TONS of concealer and TONS of make-up. After an excessive amount of stress and sweat from sports and my senior year of high school, my skin got absolutely horrid. I have taken many medications... from BenzaClin, Differin, Pro-Activ (biggest joke ever!), Tretinoin Retin-A, Doxycycline, etc... nothing EVER worked even the least bit. After going to my family doctor I was sent to a dermatologist. I went into my appointment in November 2008 and she took one look at me and exclaimed "Accutane!" She put me on Bactrin (for bacterial infections) and Yaz birth control for the month before we could get my 2nd pregnancy test. This helped A LOT with taking swelling down and reducing redness.
After my 2nd pregnancy test was entered into the system, I picked up my first prescription on Claravis, a generic brand of Accutane, on December 9th, 2008. I am on 80 mg a day for 4 months. My dermatologist said since I am young she wants to make sure we get rid of my acne for good and if I take the higher dosage, there is a lesser chance that it will come back. I'm around 140 lbs. and 5'6-ish, but my dermatologist said that the dosage is fine for me!
I had no side effects whatsoever and my skin remained the same for about 2 weeks. Around the 3rd week I started to see a difference in my skin- ALREADY! I was no longer breaking out anymore and my previous acne/acne scars were beginning to lighten!
With the amazing and fast results came the side effects. The chapped lips picked up pretty quickly and I've been trying a lot of different things to calm them, but I have yet to find anything --- anyone got a good recommendation? I tried Aquaphor and it didn't help at all. I have gotten a few headaches, but that might not be Accutane-related. I got some dryness where my acne had been really inflamed. I had some issues with breaking out from high in fragrance products once I got around 4 weeks into Accutane and had to switch to all Aveeno products, but other than that --- just clearer, nicer skin!
I went to the dermatologist January 7th, 2009 and she agreed! My skin had reacted VERY well to treatment and she was excited to see how I progressed within my second month! Friends at school have been commenting on my skin and I am beginning to wear less and less make up! I got my first blood test done at this appointment and my dermatologist said if everything is okay, I won't have to get anymore blood drawn until the end of treatment.
Products that have worked for me: Aveeno Ultra-Calming Foaming Face Wash, Aveeno Ultra-Calming Shave Gel, Aveeno Moisturizing Lotion, Bare Escentuals foundation... if you have any great ones, please let me know as I am sure the dry skin is only going to worsen!
Hopefully some people read this and find something worth reading! Leave comments, ask questions, as I am new to all of this!
