Almost One month on Accutane! Yay!!! So far everything has stayed the same for me, my lips are still dry, I have some dry patches on the back of my hands, and I produce absolutely no oil! My skin had been looked amazing the past few days but on day 17 I got an under the skin pimple on my left cheek bone and a small pimple on the right side of my face. I think this happened because I did skip a day of Accutane and didn't wash my face that day ( ewwww I know). Sometimes you just get crazy busy with life and that's what happened to me. I was not home at all one day and I left my accutane pills at my house, as soon as I got home that day it was already 2 am and I was so exhausted I passed out in my bed with my makeup still on. Two days later I woke up with those two pimples...
I have still been doing the oil cleansing method every night and I have been adding Jojoba Oil into my moisturizer. This stuff is like Gold to me now! If I don't put a few drops into my moisturizer my skin is dry and my makeup does not look good at all. So far all is good and I am so excited to see what the next few months hold.

Low Dose Accutane (10mg/day): Day 55

    •  Only one cystic acne that got popped during shower (still taking so long to get dried up).
    •  Few small ones come out but they disappear in 1-2 days.
    • A lot of left over red/brown spots.
    • Got 2 new pitted scars from breakouts..
    •  I notice a lot of facial hairs grown up after I started Accutane (I am pretty sure I never had this much before)
    • Eczema developed around my eyes and nose and it made me extremely itchy... but after applying some moisturizing cream, they disappeared in a week.
    • Planning to take 20mg/week after I finish this pack (15 pills left)

TCA Cross (Spot Treated): Day 42
    • Pretty much the same.. not much improvement..
    • One of the treated area got so much wider... but got like 10% improvement in depth.

My face got so much worse for past few months..meh.. but I am so glad that the initial breakout is near the end.

Accutane is a vitamin A derivative.

You do not need to buy this expensive drug nor risk going through the possible harmful side effects.

Because Accutane and its generic brands (isotretinoin) are a vitamin A derivative you can get the same benefits from mashing carrots in a blender and rubbing the carrot slush on your face as a cream. Trust me the vitamin A in the carrot is enough to make your skin stop producing so much oil.

When exposed to air, vitamin A will oxidize to some extent to form retinoic acid which is isotretinoin.

    Want to see the chemistry.

The beta carotene that is in the carrot is cleaved at the C15 to C15’ double bond yielding two molecules of retinol (i.e. Vitamin A).

The Vitamin A undergoes oxidation at its terminal alcohol (OH) group yielding 2 molecules of 11-cis retinal as shown below.

The 2 molecules of 11-cis retinal have alternative fates they may either became all trans-retinal or undergo oxidation with the oxygen in the air to become retinoic acid which is another name for isotretinoin. Hence you have just put acne cream on your face.

To me, acne, acne scars, oily skin, large pores, and textured skin makes a woman look MORE BEAUTIFUL and SEXIER. Somewhere from 2nd to 5th grade I started to find acne as something beautiful. Before then, I had crushes on girls, some who just happen to have acne.  Then somewhere along the way I started seeing acne as something beautiful. If there was a woman with cystic acne and acne scars all over her face, upper neck, upper chest, shoulders, upper arms, and back,  I would be EXTREMELY EXTREMELY EXTREMELY EXTREMELY EXTREMELY PHYSICALLY ATTRACTIVE TO HER.

so i’ve been breaking out recently i don’t know if it’s the purge stage or stress or what i’m eating... i have three big pimples on my forehead (which i never break out at) and just know i saw a LARGE bumpy red patch next to my nose on my left cheek which i’m scared of it becoming a big pimple because it’s right in front of the face where people see you :( i’m trying to be so positive but everyone around me seems to not stop pointing out my acne like do they think i’m blind and can not see it for myself? i am getting agitated. i suffer with depression already and all of this is just making it worse, it’s not really accutane’s fault though, it’s just my own personal life. anyways, i have a question for anyone that reads this, what should i be eating? and what gould i not be? i know dairy is out but what else? if you wanna recommend anything to do please help me, it is greatly appreciated!

    Hi everyone,

Here’s some background information about me: I have struggled with mild to moderate persistent acne since I was 22 (I’m now 29). It was always manageable until about 1.5 years ago when my skin went from being a little oily to VERY oily which to my dismay = way more breakouts. I finally got an appointment with the dermatologist (it took forever - I’m from Canada) and decided that Epirus was the way to go.

Im about to begin my 3rd week and I am definitely experiencing an initial breakout! My skin looks worse than before I started - it actually looks worse than I have ever seen it. I’m breaking out on my forehead and my jawline/chin and have a lot of closed comedones on my cheek which were there before starting my treatment.

I hope my IB starts to calm down soon, it’s really killing my confidence!

I wake up with around 2 cysts every day and they are leaving behind brutal scarring that can't be covered with makeup. I have also noticed smaller closed comedones popping up everywhere. It doesn't help that I am so stressed about this. I am really unsure of what to do...

I am scared that my hormones have been permanently fucked from stopping mid pack and taking a break. I see my dermatologist in 6 weeks...which is a lot of time for things to either improve or worsen. I feel like it might head for the latter though.

I have no self confidence. Anyone gone through something similar?

Starting this a bit late, but decided to record my progress. Currently ten days into treatment on 40mg of Amnesteem twice a day.

During the first week I noticed a total change in how my acne behaved, while I still had breakouts (all whiteheads and one cystic on my right cheek) the pimples seemed to cluster together with smaller heads than usual, and they would heal and be gone by the next day.

Up until the 8th day, I didn't experience any dryness other than slightly dry lips, but, oh boy did it hit like a truck. Woke up with a killer back ache (which may, or may not actually be from the tane seeing as it was gone the next day) and really dry skin and lips despite liberal moisturizing and aquaphore. Skin felt tight and hot, pretty uncomefortablefortable, but I guess its better than being extremely oily like usual.

Tenth day, skin is even more dry, actually flaking around the corners of my nose and my chin area, lips might as well be a desert. And I'm noticeably redder in the cheeks area. So far feeling pretty confident in the decision to start taking it. Any tips on how to really fight redness and dryness despite good moisturizing?

ight so i doubt anyone is gonna read this but imma post it anyways. I have always had mild to moderate. I honestly can't remember when i started to get acne, all I remember was my older sister who also has acne telling me to start washing my face because im gonna get it soon lol. . So then when it started to get worse I would use my older sisters old prescription creams and I don't remember what they were. My acne started to get worse, and at some point I went to the dermatologist and got doxycycline I think, probably like 2 years ago. That cleared my skin well, I think i was on it for like 3 months or so. Then when I got off that I started to use the regimen on here. Followed it strictly and had clear skin with about 2 to 3 white heads a week and sometimes deep ones that don't come to the surface. My acne is mostly around mouth and sometimes nose and between eye brows. This regimen worked well for my pimples but not for my overall skin. I gained super sensitive skin, but i thought it was a worth it trade, red skin and no acne rather than acne and normal color. Also, I surf every day that I can, so its getting tough to use bp as my skin is becoming more and more sensitive, basically I always look sunburnt and people always comment on it. One day I was looking at the posts on here and I came across the caveman regimen. I thought this would be super sick because I hated how much time the regime takes to apply and I felt weird doing it sometimes because no other guy seemed to have to put in so much work and worry. So I tried it and the first 2 weeks were super good. I basically did the surf version of this in that the only time my face came in contact with anything was salt water for about 2 hours. When I would first jump into the water I could feel all the oil come off my skin and it felt acidic, which I thought meant it was working. I only would have like 1 white head and I could see normal skin color coming back into my face and i was super excited and honestly started to have a different outlook on how my life would be without having to worry about a regimen. (I went throught a whole thought process for 2 weeks deciding if I was going to do it or not and one reason i thought it would work was because i've never had acne on my back or chest or neck so I thought maybe it was caused When the purge stage came, I couldn't bare it. It was the worst It had ever been in my life and I was breaking out in places that I never had acne before. Felt pretty depressed and didn't want to hang out with anybody. Then I went back onto the acne.org regimen except I was dumb and went straight for the full bp instead of easing into it cuz I thought my skin would still be used to it. So I basically came close to chemical burns and my face was straight red all over. 3 Months later of the regimen and depression, My skin came close to  back to how it was before the breakout. Except now I had acne that I had to control next to my nose and on my temple  and some on forehead.  So over It went from a 3 to a 5 on my personal scale(the breakout was a 9) So after a while of the full regimen I decided that there were other things that could help with acne and redness, so I stopped dairy (my favorite food is cereal and ice cream), starting drinking green tea, take zinc supplements, drink table spoon of acv, ate healthier (less sugar no more drinks besides water, etc). I also started to only do the regime once a day, which was working at home but then went to college were it is humid and isn't working as well. That brings us to where I am now, mild to moderate acne that acts differently than any acne i've had so far. I have small bumps and white heads on the area next to my nose mostly on left side, around mouth, in between eyebrows, and little bit on temples. I am writing here because I can tell that It is getting worse as time moves on, maybe because humidity? It seems that using the regimen once a day isn't  even reducing the redness that much. So I wanted to write on here and see if any of you guys have had similar stories and maybe could think of a regimen that is similar to bp but not so harmful and can balance with surfing and sunburnt life style.

I’m going to do some monthly posts instead because weekly posts are becoming more and more monotonous and I don’t have time to post weekly. The past month was kinda rough, with lots of rounds of breaking out, calming down, and then breaking out again. The closed comedones are still being stubborn, though they have noticeably decreased. The few that come to heads are somewhat painful and contain a yellowy-white hard grain, like ¼ of a uncooked grain of rice. Switching into college was complicated for my dermatillomania and I’m still trying to get back on track with that, since the second I walk out of my room I’m looking into a huge vanity mirror. And I’m stressed. It’s great haha. I’m breaking out along the sides of my chin and a little on the middle of my cheeks, and the spots are usually the deeper (but not cystic or papule-like) breakouts that are probably from old closed comedones.

    Products used:

-Aveeno Sheer Daily Moisturizer: morning and night

-Neutrogeena Oil-Free Moisture with Sunscreen (SPF 15): mornings when I plan to go outside.

-Burt’s Bees chapstick: use in morning and throughout the day

-Aquaphor tube: apply at night before bed

    -Dove micellar water body wash

-Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Castile Soap: Distilled 1:2 of soap to water in a separate glass bottle. Used in morning and in evening.

-Heliocare oral supplement: on days where I plan to go outside a lot (still wear sunscreen, though!)

    -Kirkman’s Multivitamin without vitamin A or D

-NAC supplement: for OCD, anxiety, depression (many sites suggest also taking a vitamin C supplement with NAC; I take the daily multivitamin below and a little bit of an “Immune+” Emergen-C packet [the type w/vitamin D, since my multivitamin doesn’t include it] every other day)

-Dry face: Not considerably; getting some dry patches on arms

-Dry lips: Yes, a little worse than in the past but not tragic

-Dry nose/eyes: Not really, maybe a little with my eyes.

    -Depression: Same as usual

-Thirsty: I definitely have to drink more water, especially when I wake up in the morning, but it’s a good habit to get into :)

-Hair loss: Much less than past few months

So I've been off Accutane for 2 months now and it's been interesting to see how some things have changed. The first thing I noticed was about 3 weeks after stopping Accutane my hair started getting oiler and oiler. I now can barely go without washing it every other day whereas on Accutane it was over 3 days. I was hoping it wouldn't go back to this but at least it's not as bad as before Accutane....yet. About a month after stopping Accutane, my face got oiler (though that could have been the extreme summer heat also). Now there are days where i don't even moisturize and I've had to change my products again. I have also gotten a couple small pimples since stopping but nothing to really worry about at all. The best part is that I still have not gotten any cysts and that is really all that matters to me. I know it's still early but i'm hopeful that 6 month or a year from now I will still be cyst free. When I went off of Sipro, I began getting cysts worse than ever about 4 or 5 months after stopping so we shall see.

Hi everyone, I am just finishing up my first week of Accutane and I am noticing many improvements. I know many people say you cannot notice any changes until usually a month in but mine are substantial. As you can notice all of my acne has completely stopped forming and my old pimples/scars are now healing.

    Current Accutane Skin Care Routine
I have been using argan oil and cer-ve as a moisturizer for my face, Aquaphor for my lips, and Cetaphil as my cleanser. So far I have noticed my skin is a little drier than normal, but with my intensive moisturizing routine, I have not noticed any peeling. I apply the argan oil first then add a layer of cer-ve on top to lock in the moisture morning and night. I wash my face once a day at night before I get in the shower. I apply Aquaphor at least once every hour to combat the imminent lip dryness. This has kept my skin moisturized and healing the scars very quickly. I also drink 4 bottles of water every day which helps keep your skin moisturized as well as combat some side effects such as headaches and muscle cramps.

    Side Effects
The only side effect I have noticed is 2 days after I started taking the medicine I had pretty intense muscle cramps in the upper part of my leg. I had not had any physical activity the day before just a normal day at work, so I'm almost positive that was caused by the Accutane starting to affect my body. I also had a mild headache my 2nd and 3rd day but drinking a lot of water helped that subside. Since then my side effects have passed and I pray they stay away.

How longs does it take for Roaccutane to kick in?  I mean I'm mildly itchy which I attribute to 'something' happening but and I have one painful joint at the base of my thumb (RSI from googling 'roaccutane' on my phone and playing HQ trivia maybe?? haha) and I would say am mildly less spotty than usual for 'this time of the month' but other than that...nothing. Is that normal??

Most people seem to report extremely dry skin and lips literally within a couple of days...I guess I'll see how things are at the end of week 1 - I know I need to be more patient.

On the plus side, I don't really feel like my mood is being affected detrimentally in any way - if anything I feel more upbeat than usual and am feeling positive about the decision to take roaccutane.

  22. 1 entry

    20 years old, 125 lb, 40mg for the first 2 months - 50mg from 3rd month onwards.

So I started Accutane towards the end of May this year. I expected to see results straight away, despite constantly reading blog posts and watching videos that told me otherwise. I was nervous but after a 5 month wait on the NHS I just wanted to start the course. My lips did become chapped and dry after the first week or two so I ordered Aquaphor lip ointment from amazon and slathered it all over my lips. This made them feel better but I hate the feeling of dry lips, as its something I'v never had in my life. Anyway, after 2 or 3 weeks (exam season was over, thank god) my face started to become dry, with patches all over peeling off and looking very red and irritated. I got a few more spots but nothing i hadn't had before. Then a few weeks later, my hair started to become dry, which meant I only had to wash it every 4 days or so (even then I didn't really need to wash it, I just felt like I should). My scalp was so itchy it kept me awake at night. I’ve never seen anything like it- my scalp was literally flaking off and I had to keep slathering coconut oil on it every night to make it stop itching. This only lasted for about a week but it was awful. I found that Vosene shampoo or T-gel shampoo really helped. This stopped completely after my 2nd month and from then onwards my hair has not produced any oil or been itchy.

I continued to break out randomly - nothing awful. The worst part was that I would pick at those spots (a habit I have never been able to break) and then awful red marks would replace the spot due to the skin being so thin. I got a lot of nosebleeds for the first 2 or 3 months- probably around 4 a week (not always big ones and I am prone to getting them anyway). To help this- I put Aquaphor up and around my nose). My nose also peels EVERYDAY. I feel like this might be my fault as I pick at it but its hard not to as even if I leave it, flakey bits start to form around my nostrils and the side of my nose. Imagine really thin layers of skin just peeling off your nose everyday. Its gross and leaves my nose constantly red. So that sucks.

After month 3, I started to become really tired. My eyes were very dry (which made wearing contact lenses hard) and I felt exhausted all the time- I am unsure whether this is due to waking up earlier than usual due to working during the summer or whether it was the drug. Nevertheless, its a horrible feeling but I tried to push through it and go to the gym or not sleep during the day. My face became very dry and I ended up putting Aquaphor all over my face at night with moisturiser on top (Epaderm or Cerave), which seemed to help a lot.

I drank and went out quite a few times whilst on Accutane - apart from really bad hangovers, I didn't feel that different. It was the fear of what it was doing to my liver that stopped me drinking the most. My friend drank/did drugs whilst she was on it too, but its all down to the individual and what you think is best for you. (I'm not saying its ok to do this but i did and this is just my experience).

The sun was also a concern for me. I went on two holidays and endured a heat wave (which is rare in my country). I am usually pretty bad with sun cream and remembering to apply it and i have naturally olive skin- so i basically just remembered to apply factor 50 numerous times a day. I only burnt once or twice and it wasn't too bad, however, if you have naturally pale skin I would stay out of the sun more than I did and be more strict about sun cream, as your skin is very sensitive

I am now on month 4 and my skin is pretty much completely clear- apart from I did get a big spot on my cheek last week but it went after 3 days. Its an amazing feeling and i must say I LOVE not having to wash my hair everyday. Always make sure to take the pills on a full stomach and to moisturise all the time and apply lip balm constantly. I notice that if iI drink a lot of water, my symptoms decrease (the dryness). So yeah - that's about it I think. I'm hoping my skin stays this good and I don't have to go back on Accutane because it is an annoying drug to be on. However, I'm annoyed at myself for waiting this long to mention it to my doctor as it has truly worked. My initial breakout was not bad at all and it started to clear from month 2 onwards.

I’m a bit late updating as not much has really happened.
Just over a week ago my doctor upped me to 40mg, he warned me that because I had such a good first month my skin would likely get worse for a while when increasing my dosage. My skin has actually stayed the same, I haven’t had any breakouts, the only think I’ve noticed is that other parts of my body are starting to get really dry now too like my arms and knees.

One thing that did surprise me is the price of the Isotretinoin. 20mg only cost me about £24 but 40mg cost me £58 which doesn’t really make sense..

After this month ill I’ll have two more months left at 60 mg then I’m all done!

Apologize for the awful introduction last time, here's a quick overview of the diet: No Oils, eat mostly starch based Carbohydrates, the diet is vegan so no animal products. No nuts because of their high fat content. The diet is inherently moderate in protein (around 30-60 grams, depending on legume consumption), and very low in fat (10-15 grams).

    Day 8:
Foods I ate yesterday: oatmeal, potatoes and sweet potatoes curry with brown rice and some assorted vegetables. Spoonful of wakame for iodine mostly.

Status report: Fatigue has been an issue. In fact my first entry was written in a borderline psychoactive state as evident by it's weirdness. Anyways, I do feel better today so I'm banking on it being a transitional period of sorts.

Acne has been strange. I'm getting quite a few whiteheads which I rarely get. I counted five whiteheads this morning. Generally my acne is red and cystic. The whiteheads are formed around my left cheek and chin. The redness and thick flesh of my cheeks seems slightly better, though it's hard to tell objectively. It's a bit disheartening for such an extreme diet to have negative affects but it's only been 8 days so I'm going to try to persevere for 60 days.

To start off, I am going to try and start posting once a month at least, hopefully, more often than that. As for the update on my skin, it hasn't been the best few days. I think that is because I have run out of acidophilus that I pair with spiro, and my skin is not liking that. I forgot to call in the refill before the weekend. As a result of that, I have a few new spots on my cheek that are honestly really bothering me. I can't feel them, but my skin was looking good before this. It might also be a result of me not using many products to help with acne (For the past week, I have only used calamine lotion as a spot treatment at night.) I am taking a break from the other stuff because I have to get my picture for the yearbook + my drivers license this week and I am trying to avoid dry skin. Some steps of my usual skincare routine could dry skin a little, so I don't want to risk that. However, I will be doing it all again after I get those pictures done. I thought for this entry, I could share my skincare routine because it has as much of an impact on my skin as the spiro. In the end, I will include a picture of all of these products so that you know what they look like in case you are interested. I will also add where I got all of these. First off, I have three cleansers:

    1) CereVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser - for when I have dry skin

    2) Cetaphil Foaming Face Wash for Redness-Prone Skin - for when my skin is clear, and not dry + for mornings

3)Bioré Charcoal Acne Clearing Cleanser - for when I have spots/breakouts

For my nighttime routine, I usually use the Bioré cleanser, and then if my skin is not dry, I will apply the Thayers rose petal witch hazel to my skin using a cotton round. Only if I feel especially down about my skin and I know I won't be putting on makeup soon, I will use Differin Gel. It could be pretty drying after a few uses. I'll then apply the Cetaphil Hydrating Eye Gel-Cream while I let the other products sink in. Then I put on the Cetaphil Redness relieving Night Moisturizer. Then if needed, I put the Walgreens Calamine Lotion on my spots. If I have a spot that I just can't stand, I'll put the Neutrogena On-The-Spot Acne Treatment (2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide) on it, and that makes it flatter so that it is less visible underneath makeup. However, I rarely use it because I have noticed that is leaves behind especially dark red marks after it takes care of the breakout. I then put on some chapstick and I am done. I think pretty soon though, I will be testing out Bio-Oil to see if that helps with my scarring, and later I will be trying out The Body Shops Drops of Youth for the same reason. But for now, I just end with the calamine lotion. When my skin is clear and/or dry, I would just skip the witch hazel, spot treatment, and different gel.

For my morning routine, I use the Cetaphil Foaming Face Wash (above). I then use the Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer with sunscreen SPF 50+. (Sunscreen helps prevent sun damage and supposedly helps fade acne scars when used daily.) Then I use the same eye cream as before and some chapstick.

After I take a shower (The steam helps open up the pores), I sometimes put on a face mask. The type varies based on how my skin is that day, but the ones I usually use are the Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Hydrating Mud Mask, the Shea Moisture African Black Soap Clarifying Mud Mask, and the Origins Out of Trouble 10 Minute Mask. Both the African Black Soap and the Origins Mask are for acne, and I think they work very well. Also, once a week (after a shower) I use the Health and Beauty Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay mask paired with water. There is a lot of hype around that mask, and I agree that it works super well for treating hormonal acne (which is what I have). It works especially well if you use a toner after you take it off (I use that same witch hazel one). I also then use the Mario Badescu spray (the green one) after a mask and when I get out of the shower. And one more product I use every few days is in the shower: The Body Shop Vitamin C Glow Revealing Liquid Peel. I use it as a facial scrub, and it makes my skin super smooth and glowy. Vitamin C is also supposed to help with scarring. I stick to these routines because for me personally, all of these products work super well for me. I believe the reason I am breaking out now is just that I have not taken the acidophilus in a few days.

I hope this helped if maybe you are looking for a good skin care routine or just a product or two. I think the next time I post, I will do an update + a makeup routine that I do to cover my acne + scarring, (including a before and after) because I know I could've used that a couple of years ago. Take care, and I hope you have a good day!:)
