Alternative to Doxycycline/Minocycline etc?

Hi there,

I'm 26 and have been suffering from mild to moderate acne for about 7 years now. A few months ago I started taking doxycycline and it cleared my skin up really well and also got rid of my dry skin/dandruff as well. However, I'd been getting a lot of headaches recently so I got a bit worried that it might be the pills causing the problems and stopped taking them. It turns out I had a sinus infection so who knows whether the doxy was a factor in me getting that or not... It had always been my plan to slowly phase out the doxycycline but maybe not so quick and so soon.

Anyway, after just a week or so of not taking the doxycycline I've started to break out again. I'm really not sure what do though because I only started taking the doxycycline out of curiosity really, and I'm worried about the long term damage I could do myself on it. On the other hand, it felt so great to go a few months without spending any time worrying about my skin or getting depressed when I realised another big spot was on it's way up.

Ultimately, I'd love to find out which bacteria the doxycycline is suppressing and find a natural way to control it, but does such a thing exist? Does anybody know if there is an alternative to doxycycline that doesn't threaten to do me long term damage?

Failing that, are there others out there who've taken doxy/tetra/minocyclines long term who could give me some advice? I just loved being able to wake up and feel positive every morning. I'm not sure I can go back to being depressed and introverted again...

Thanks, Nick.

Hmmm... I just started taking Doxycycline about a week and a half ago. It's what my doctor prescribed. I am going to see her next week 'coz she wanted to check up on me and see how I'm doing with it. I am too worried about the long term damage because I don't want to depend on taking an antibiotic every day to promote my clear skin. Doxycycline is meant to kill all bacteria in your body, which includes the bacteria that causes acne, however in doing so it will kill good bacteria too... I think you can read up more about it online somewhere. Just google Doxycycline, I've been reading up on it and I have a few concerns. There is a section here on Acne.org called "Prescriptions... " where people talk about Doxy a lot and you can get more insight of how people are reacting to it long term. Like I said I've only been on it for a week and a bit and I'm hoping to only be on it no longer than three months. I'm not too sure of any other alternative out there... except for the BCP but that might not be a good idea for you... hehehe ;) I hope I helped a bit...
