Hey guys, first time I have ever really been on this website, and well, I suppose I'm trying to find out what sort of side effects people have had whilst on Roaccutane. Here is my story so far.....

After over 10 years of suffering from acne, I have now got an appointment to see a Dermatologist, this is much needed after trying several types of medication over the years. After asking my Doctor to be referred on, I am told there is a year's waiting list. I come away from my Doctor's Surgery a little disheartened, but after thinking about it, decide to go private. I can no longer suffer with this problem. Another year down the line, my skin could be 100 times worse than what it is now. The treatment is fairly expensive, but something I know I will have to grin and bear with. I know deep down it will be worth it in the end, even though there will be many ups and downs!!!

1st February 2006 - My appointment with the Dermatologist.

I arrive at the Hospital and await my appointment to see the Dermatologist. At this point I am very nervous and have lots of questions buzzing around my head... what if there is no cure? How long will the treatment last for? Will the acne come back???

Its now 3 o'clock and I go into the Dermologist's office I am asked about my history, how long I have suffered, which types of medication I have been on over the years etc. I tell him everything and he says I should have been referred to see a Skin Specialist many years ago, as this is not a problem which is likely to disappear on its own. After giving my life story I am told there is a cure and I am subscribed Roaccutane. I am to take a 60mg dosage per day, although for the first week I am only to take 20mg a day then the following two weeks I am to take 40mg per day then after these three weeks are over I am to start taking the full 60mg dosage.

Early February - Mid March 2006

So far so good, my treatment has been working out really well, I have had a few side effects. My skin has become very dry, and my lips too but nothing I can't handle. I have started to use E45 facial soap and moisturiser and Neutrogena lip balm although I am constantly reapplying this. All the blackheads from my nose and in the crease on my chin have also disappeared too. Where I used to suffer with my spots has now cleared a little, there is definately an improvement. I have also noticed that my hair has become a lot less greasy. I no longer have to wash it every day, I could maybe go two days without washing it, which actually feels like a lifetime as I have been washing it daily since I was about 12! I have an appointment with the Dermatologist in a weeks time, so it'll be nice to hear what he has to say!

Wednesday 29th March, 2006

Today is the day I go back for my check up, this should actually be half way through the treatment, but my Dermatologist is actually away for a few weeks, so I am having to go a 3 weeks early. I am not feeling too good about myself at the moment, I feel as though my spots look really red and angry, my skin is beginning to feel rather itchy but I suppose this is because it is starting to heel. I still have no sign of the blackheads on my nose and chin which I suppose is a good sign, and with a bit of make-up on, my skin isn't looking too bad (see profile picture, this was taken the morning of my appointment).

I arrive at the Hospital for my appointment, and one of the nurse's who was in the Dermatologist's office whilst I had my consultation spots me. She calls me over to see how things are going and has told me there has been an excellent improvement in my skin since my last visit. This makes me feel a bit better about myself, as other people are starting to notice the difference, I suppose I am so used to looking at my skin on a daily basis I am unable to notice any changes any more.

I go to see the Dermatologist who asks how things are going, if I have had any side effects, I explain I haven't had any other than the usual, the dry skin and chapped lips. I had the odd headache when I upped my dosage but this was nothing unusual. He looks at my skin and again tells me there is a great improvement, my skin is looking a lot smoother, but although there are noticable changes, I will still need to complete the 20 week course of Roaccutane as by cutting it short, the acne is likely to return - and we don't want any of that do we???

I come away from the Hospital feeling better as other people are noticing a difference which is great, and has really helped to give my self confidence a boost. Hopefully, things will only get better (fingers crossed).

12th April, 2006

I am now 10 weeks into my treatment and I'm finding that again my spots look red and angry and rather big. I know that every day on this treatment is a different day, but my god, I hope it improves some more. I am experiencing a lot of dry skin at the moment, especially around my mouth. I just wish I could scrub it all away, but unfortunately on this treatment, I am to let it disappear on its own. When I look in the mirror, I feel as though I look like I have dried weetabix stuck around my mouth - not a good look as you can imagine.

My skin is also starting get a lot itchier now too, I'm assuming this is because it's healing and shedding the old skin away??? Answers on a postcard please!

I had a look at a photograph taken just after Christmas when my skin was at one of its worse stages, there is definately a vast improvement. I know I have had my ups and downs on this treatment, but I definately believe it is worth it. I can't wait to see the end result... Its costing a lot of money, but to anyone who has suffered with acne, this is definately worth paying for!

So far so good I'd say, although I am now going through a very dry patch, I dont actually have many spots on my face, there are more so on my cheeks, but the skin in this area hasn't started to peel away just yet, so I'm hoping that when it does so, the spots will go away.

I shall keep you posted and let you know how I am getting on with my treatment. Anyone who has any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Lots of love, hugs and kisses,

Kelly - xxx

Hey, thanks for reading my post, I was beginning to think it was a bit long winded. Its a bit strange knowing that so many people are actually going through this too, I felt so alone when I first started the treatment, as all my friends skin seems to be 'perfect', thankfully, in a few weeks time, mine will be too.... yey! Is there not a photo on my profile, I thought I had added it?

Good luck with your treatment, and make sure you stick with it... sometimes I feel like giving up because it feels as though I've made no progress, but I look back at old photographs and I can most definately see an improvement there!

Take care,

Thank you very much, on that photo your skin looks really clear, I can't wait for the end result! I get quite excited about it sometimes, sounds pretty sad I know, but when you've never had clear skin, well, its all a new experience!

Good luck to you too!

Hello,

I'm on 60mg a day at the moment, hopefully, my dosage shouldn't go any higher. I often have days when I am not too happy with the results, I still have the occasional breakout but I just keep on reminding myself that it has to get worse before it gets better.

I wish you all the luck in the world, I know how down it can make somebody feel. Before I started my treatment, I hated the thought of going out of my house, my skin got me down that much. Now, I try not to think about it too much, I know that in the end, it'll all be worth it!

Good luck with your treatment, and make sure you stick at it... It'll all be worth it in the end!
