I guess I will do a log after all!

Hey everyone. I have never posted here and wasn't going to do a log, but now that the side effects of Amnesteem are hitting me, I think I could use the support (none of my friends know anything about the drug) and the logs have been pretty helpful in preparing me to start Accutane. Soo, here I am!

I am a 22 year old female. I don't know how to rank my acne. It's more persistent than severe. It's rarely so bad that I can't completely cover it with makeup. I don't have any noticeable scarring either. In this way, I've been fortunate that acne hasn't interfered with my lifestyle that much. I think most people aren't even aware that I have bad skin. But I feel uncomfortable going in public without makeup because I always have those ugly red marks from past break outs, mostly around my chin.

I started getting acne in 4th grade (thanks mom and dad!) so I don't remember what it's like to not have it. I have used the whole range of topical Rxs, Proactiv (which worked pretty well, but not well enough). I have also used oral antibiotics, which worked a little, but I can't try any others because I'm allergic. I was a little surprised when the doctor prescribed Accutane (40mg/day) because I wasn't breaking out at all when I had my appointment, but also relieved because I'm ready for this mess to be over. She said that she thought my acne would respond well to it.

EDIT: I guess I forgot to add that I also tried the Clear Skin Regimen for a while, but I found more success with Proactiv (combining BP with glycolic acid/that salicylic acid cleanser they also make). And I've been on Ortho-Tri-Cyclen for acne for years, but I have no idea what effect it makes. It would probably be worse without it.

In addition, my dermatologist gave me SkinCeuticals gentle cream cleanser and Hydrating B5 gel (supposed to help with scarring, she says), so I've been using that. And lots of lip balm with hydrocortisone in it. These seem like nice products, but I miss my scrubs and toners!

Day 7

-itchy scalp.. i hope it doesnt come to dandruff. ugh.

-around my mouth and corners of my nose are really dry

-my skin still gets greasy by the end of the day (because I'm using dry skin products?)

-i have to be more careful applying makeup, it doesn't go on so smoothly anymore

-initial breakout has started, but it's mostly a few little whiteheads popping up. also i feel a zit forming on my temple, which is weird, i never break out there. i can definitely see icky blackheads and clogged pores coming to the surface. i hope this is over soon.

-also, i still get headaches at least twice a day since Day 2

-my skin feels super sensitive/tender/red

overall, it's nothing i can't deal with, but i want to start seeing results instead of nastiness!!

I'm on day 7 also and i've got all of the same side effects as you. They started yesterday and then kicked in today. I already had quite a few spots so the dry flaky skin + spots = a skin disaster. The sides of my nose are so sore but I seem to be coming down with a cold so it's even more sore and red from that. I'm on 50 mg of isotretenoin (no specific name on the box. I hope that's not a bad thing).

Good luck with your progress. I'll be following your log as we're at the same stage. Just think in a few months time we'll have the beautiful clear skin we've been dreaming of. :D

Thanks for the response Nikki! I'm glad someone else is on the same day as me!

I think I'm getting a cold too, and I just feel so DRY inside and out. It really is gross. I'm going to go look for my Zicam now.

Day 9

Well, today I am not really feeling strongly either way about this accutane business. I can tell my face is changing, so that's good. I got a few more baby whiteheads, which I popped out with an extractor after I washed my face (bad, I know, but they were begging for it). I can definitely tell I am "purging".. eww. Fortunately I don't have any large zits or cysts. Also the corners of my nose, my chin, and between my eyebrows are all very dry. On the other hand.. where I'm not breaking out, my skin looks pretty good.

The headaches seem to have subsided, thankfully.

Here is my current regimen:

wash with skinceuticals mild cleansing cream and water

apply skinceuticals hydrating b5 gel

apply cetaphil lotion to dry areas

and i'm spot treating with proactiv advanced blemish.. something. its 6% BP.

Aquaphor/other lip balm on my lips. I'm being psychotic about it. If I get cracked or crusty lips, I'm going to be miserable.

My usual mac makeup has been doing an Ok job of covering this, but it definitely doesn't agree with my skin the way it did before, so I've just been using much less makeup.

I've been avoiding the gym because I think my skin looks worse without makeup than it did before. But I'm just going to go.. and hope I don't see anyone I know. Doubtful!!

I really wish I would have started accutane a long time ago!

Are you ok chick? You sound a bit down from your post. I'll send you a big smile :D and get dancing  (sorry I just love these smiles so any excuse!)

I wish i'd started Accutane a long time ago also. My doctor used to say i'd grow out of acne and now ten years on and i've still got it. The problem in the UK is that you can't see a derm until your GP refers your, so you're not actually seeing the specialist until it becomes severe or persistent. But I have read that the chances of developing depression are reduced if you're out of your teens so that's a good thing about taking it when you're older.

I wouldn't feel bad about squeezing out the whitehead. I know we're all told not to but I think if you only squeeze until just before it would bleed and cover your fingers with tissue then it's not too bad. Personally I find that if I leave a whitehead it just get's bigger and bigger and turns into a massive spot, whereas if you just get rid of the gunk it clears up.

I love love love MAC make up. The nearest counter to me is in Harvey Nichols and I spend a fortune on the make up and then go wandering and spend the rest of my money in the store. So bad! I'm a massive shopaholic.

I'm glad you're skin is looking better.

Take care

heyy again nikki.

yeah i'm feeling good. i think i was just mopey about going to work out earlier!

i'm in the states, but i spent a semester of college in london, and harvey nichols is so amazing!!! there is no limit to how much money i could spend in that store. of course i ended up not buying anything because the exchange rate was so awful. but yeah, MAC is great. whenever i need my eye makeup done before a party or anything they always do a great job and are much sweeter than ladies at the other counters.

also, i have to say this aquaphor stuff is pretty amazing. i noticed my hands were getting all crackly in class today. fortunately i had some and they fixed it up in an instant. wouldn't put it anywhere on my face except lips though - too greasy.

Day 11

I'm really hoping that the breakout around my chin is coming to an end. I haven't broken out this bad in a long, long time. It still could be a lot worse, I mean, I don't have any big bumps or anything and my nose, cheeks, and forehead are clear. It already seems like some of my blackheads have come out on their own.

As far as side effects, my face and lips are much drier. If I don't put lotion on my face right away, it flakes up completely. Also its harder to apply makeup because just moving a concealer brush against my skin pushes the top layer of skin off! It's gross. with a lot of moisturizer i was able to make myself look like i usually do last night, and fortunately i was hanging out in a bar with dim lighting :/

Does anyone know if there are serious effects to drinking alcohol on accutane? my doctor didn't mention it.

Also, is anyone using a facial moisturizer as effective but less greasy than cetaphil?

Day 12

This morning I woke up feeling SO dried out. It probably didn't help that I slept in for almost 10 hours. But seriously, I felt really dehydrated, and my whole face was just crackling. After I took a shower, I RAN to put my b5 gel and cetaphil on my face, then I covered myself with my body lotion (Curel Ultra Healing) and started chugging water. I felt much better then :) I woke up with two tiny whiteheads around my lips.. I wonder if the constant greasing up with lip balm is clogging my pores? Nothing much I can do about it. Anyway, they came out in the shower.

On the upside, the little pimples on my chin are deflating (I think the Accutane literally just dried them out). There's one bigger zit that seems a little more stubborn, unfortunately. It's so weird not to have oily skin anymore. I'm hoping since my acne is pretty mild that my initial breakout is DONE but we'll see when I wake up tomorrow.

I think part of the reason people report depression on accutane, at least girls, is that your skin is so dry and crappy that putting on makeup and getting out the door just seems too difficult. Very few of my friends have seen me without makeup, and that is a RARE occasion. I know lots of other acne sufferers are the same way. We have gotten used to putting on our pretty face and hiding our real one. For the last two days I've barely left my apartment, partly because I don't even want to touch foundation or powder.

Day 14

I can't believe I'm almost halfway through the first month. That went really fast. Time to start thinking about getting another blood test. My skin has been a lot better today and yesterday, no new whiteheads or anything. The breakout around my chin and mouth seems to be clearing slowly. My skin has dried out, but since I've started faithfully using only my gentle cleanser, b5 gel, and cetaphil (i pump morning and night, plus extra in dryer spots) it hasn't been flaking or peeling or anything.

staying away from the heaters seems to help too.

The dry lips are so annoying, but a small price to pay!

On the leaflet inside my pills it says cut down or stop drinkinking alcohol and my derm said it's because the Accutane already puts your liver under pressure so alcohol therefore puts it under more pressure. I went out last Saturday and had two vodka and lemonades and I was fine however i'd usually drink more than that. I personally don't think it's worth drinking alot because if the alcohol causes your liver to be affected you won't get your accutane prescription.

I'm really glad your skins getting better sweetie

Hi Guys

I am at about the same point as you. I hope your progress is going well. I love not having the oily skin, now just gotta get rid of the marks!

Nikki-Vodka lemonade is the best drink out there! Not sure how I am going to go five months without many, plus I don't tell people about my acne probs so not sure how I am going to explain the not drinking thing when they ask whats up!

Have a great day!

Day 17!

Thanks girls for your warm wishes.. I've been still drinking, but not frequently, it's just hard not to when thats all everybody wants to do!

I haven't gotten any new spots since the first breakout, but soon it will be "that time of the month" and then we'll see I guess. I am really relieved that the side effects didnt turn out that bad. My face has seriously been looking better every day for a week, which is amazing, I can't remember the last time I went this long without breaking out, and it hasnt even been a month on accutane! Even the red marks are going away. It makes me grateful that my derm was willing to prescribe accutane in my case, even though it doesnt qualify as "severe nodular." even with mild acne i think it can be a miracle and if it saves me from scars, that is just amazing. As long as we don't make babies, right!

The only annoying thing today is that I woke up next to boy I'm dating, looked in the mirror, thought, hmm my face looks great! then when i got in the car i noticed the corners of my nose and around my lips were kind of peely, since i didnt get to moisturize before bed. eehgeh. i hope he didnt notice. i have to keep remembering that its always worse in my head.

Hope you ladies are having a good experience as well... <3

Had my progress on Bactrim not gone stagnent I would never have been put on accutane. I have no zits on my face right now, and very few red spots so I am sort of afraid to go to my next derm appointment since I am only on day 11, I don't want her to take me off the tane. Hopefully she remembers how bad my skin was before the regular antibiotics AHH! Good luck with your progress

Bactrim probably would have been the next step for me, but I'm allergic to it! I'm sure your derm won't take you off just because your skin looks good! Good luck!!

Day 24 (i think)

Well as dreaded, I did get a few new zits this week because of PMS. Hopefully they will die soon and at the end of month 2, I won't be experiencing the same thing.

My skin is dry, especially my nose and chin. I have been increasing the amount of moisturizer I slather on daily to compensate. It's so weird.. even at the end of the day, there is not a smidge of excess oil anywhere on my face. My red marks have almost gone away completely, thanks to the skinceuticals serum and/or the accutane - i can't tell. Other than the new zits around my jaw, which are easily covered up with concealer, my skin looks pretty good. After I drench it in cetaphil lotion. I think using gentle products has a huge effect on the condition of my skin - even though it's drier, its so much less unevenly toned and rough now than it was when i was using harsh scrubs. The skinceuticals gentle cleaser is so nice.. it cleans with orange oil and it smells really really good.

Lips are getting harder and harder to control.. they are so peeley. I apply lip balm like 900 times a day. Unfortunately I'm on spring break and forgot to bring my Aquaphor.

I've told lots of friends I'm on accutane and I think it was a good thing. Having my acne "problem" out in the open after all these years makes me care less what I look like around friends, especially since I have faith that my skin will look perfect in a couple more months.
