MSM (methylsulphonylmethane)

2. What does MSM do?

MSM has been shown to help with several chronic conditions and has the following effects on the human body:

A. Analgesic. MSM has this effect in approxiamately 70% of the people taking it. Studies were done with DMSO regarding pain transmission along the C fiber network, which is the non-myelinated nerve fibers responsible for transmitting non-emergency pain. MSM is believed to have the same effect. No studies have been done with regard to the alpha-delta fibers, which is the system responsible for acute and protective pain.

B. Anti-inflammatory. DMSO has been shown in studies to make the body's natural anti-inflammatory, cortisol, more effective in smaller amounts. MSM is believed to have the same effect. DMSO has also been shown to inhibit the excess production of fibroblasts. Fibroblasts are the primary cells that form connective tissues and are produced in excess in the swelling process. Excess fibroblasts lead to the formation of scar tissue. DMSO binds to fluids in swollen tissue and escorts it out of the body.

C. Passes through cellular membranes. It can be used as a transport for other medications.

D. Inhibits cholinesterase. Cholinesterase is an enzyme that stops excessive passage of nerve impulses from one nerve cell to another. It is also the enzyme mostly responsible for constipation.

E. Reduces muscle spasms.

F. Reduces scar tissue. By altering the crosslinking process in collagen, it helps to reduce the amount of scarring due to injury and sometimes helps to reduce old scarring.

G. Has antiparasitic qualities. Primarily for giardia, which causes diarrhea.

H. Has an immune normalizing effect. Helpful for such conditions as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and scleroderma.

I. Increases blood flow.

J. Potentially makes cell walls more permeable.

K. Increases nail and hair thickness and strength. Softens skin. Cosmetic benefits, yes. This happens due to an increase of cystine. Cystine is one of the amino acids that gives keratin its toughness. Keratin is one of the proteins found in these tissues.

L. Increased energy. A word of caution with regards to this. If you have not been active for a while, slowly return to your previous level of activity. If activity is increased too soon, you can set yourself back. Work yourself up slowly to avoid a backslide.

M. Decreased muscle soreness.

Wow! What doesn't this "MSM" do?! After reading random forums about people who take MSM, I have only heard good results in all departments, especially the skin. I began taking it 3 days ago and I'm hoping for good results soon.. (especially since I cut my lip a few days ago and hopefully it prevents scarring  )

Has anyone had any luck with this miracle supplement?

I've read some conflicting reports on supplemental MSM. Nevertheless, I've been taking it for awhile now. I notice that my joints don't ache as much after intense exercise.

I heard the powdered form of pure MSM (which can be mixed with water) is most recommended and easily available at vitamin stores.

Although I wouldn't put too much stock in performing a drastic transformation of scar tissue. I'm sure such a claim of MSM would have been heralded as a miracle if it actually were true.

I used it for months and I did notice stronger nails. I was also taking a mutli-vitamin and Vitamin C at the time. I stopped taking MSM only because I couldn't say for certain that it was working.

I took MSM for 2 months (1000mg x 3 a day)

It did nothing for me. In the worst case, I think it broke me out but I have little evidence to support this.

Good luck to whoever is trying out MSM..

I'm into the second month of taking MSM and I was just telling my mother the other day that my skin has become mysteriously more 'moisturised', in that it's soft and smooth. It's not just the face, but the whole body. I used to have really dry, flaky skin around the calves and ankles, but they are smooth to the touch now. Very good feeling. No amount of lotion in the past has ever done that before, and I wasn't even using any lotion all this time. :)

I take MSM along with Vit C (1000mg), as per Anthony's suggestion, to reduce my hyperpigmentation. So far so good. It's not all gone, but my face has become less red and sensitive, and one other thing I notice is how my skin (on the face) seems to be absorbing skincare products more readily now. In the past, it just seem to sit on it, but now I can feel the stuff getting into my skin, which is good news.

I can't really say for certain if MSM helps increase energy level and reduce muscle aches because as much as it is true for me now, I'm not sure if it's because of the MSM or that my stamina/muscle has simply become more adjusted due to regular running. In any case, I think MSM is worth a try.

It made my hair thicker but also made me break out. Don't think it helps with acne, perhaps it may help with acne scars?

there was a post on here about getting enough sulfur to combat your acne. It was posted by leon, he said that natural sulfur is best in expamle: raw onions, garlic, broccoli, you can scroll to several pages on this and read the whole post. I just re-read it an have decided to try the onion, don't really mind the taste, its just I break out on my neck and I think that maybe that is my problem not enough sulfur in my body. I am at my wits end with this stuff as everyone else is too, so what have I got to lose.

The reason why it may have not worked or broke people out is because it is a tonic, which means it detoxes... so it's going to bring out the bad stuff first then begin helping. Or so I've been told.

Wow!! My skin hasn't looked this good in a few months! No new bumps as of late and my skin is beginning to feel firmer and less oily. Wow! I guess I'm seeing the positive effects now after breaking out from it for the past week.

Not to mention my hair is growing like weeds! MSM is great stuff, really.

Capsule, but I break it in half so it dissolves better. I take 6000 MG a day with a Vitamin C each time I intake. It took about eh... 2 weeks to begin seeing results with my skin, but even sooner with soothed muscles & stronger, healthier feeling hair.
