Please post your experiences with scars docs in the DC, MD, VA area.

Recommended Posts

I've seen 1 doctor:

1) Dima Ali (Reston, VA) - Had 5 smoothbeams with her to no avail. Seemed knowledgeable and experienced but didn't work for my shallow scars.

Everyone please contribute if you live in the Metro area.

Hi, I just went to go see Dima Ali today. She said I would need V beam treatments that would cost around 4,000 bucks for my redness mixed in with smoothbeam. She seemed very nice, are you saying I shouldnt go to her as the treatments didnt work for you?

I saw a Dr. Goldstein and had 6 sessions of IPL from her and my skin had never been so bad in my life. Its my biggest regret ever.

DO NOT GO TO DR. DIMA ALI!! what ever she says is bullshit and is just after your money. trust me. after 5 smoothbeams and $5000 nothing got better and i just got more in debt.

Oh yay, please post DC metro people!! I live in Reston and would love to find someone who specializes in scars. I'm past the acne stage (knock on wood) so I don't want to go to a regular derm. I plan to ask my regular doc (who knows everyone under the sun) and will post if I find out anything. We should start a DC scar support group :)

ummmmmm dr. tina alster is known to be one of the best in the world in dc. but quite expensivel

i'm a little weary of her due to the fact she is the director of the laser surgery institute. it would seem that she would always push laser surgery and not explore other options. i might try a consultation with her.

anyone else have any good scar specialists?

It is to my knowledge that Dr. Alster doesn't accept anymore patients. You're right she probably would just push laser though. When I saw Dr. Tanzi she pushed smoothbeam and micro. The price was outrageous and not to mention a $175 consultation fee. I learn more from reading this message board. Save your money.

dr. tanzi and alster charge $1600 per treatment for fraxel. to me that's outrageous.

mon. i have a consult with dr. gerrish in manassas for fraxel.

dr. fuchs (downtown) = only went for consultations to him, he didnt impress me.

so i went to see another doctor (young guy), who I forget name... if I remember, I'll let you know. he was a smooth talker, he goes, "I'm not a salesman. I'm not trying to sell you any of those creams or anything. Smoothbeam though..." . never went back.

I also saw Dr. Berzin. She is good. I have used her for restylane and she is pretty honest. For example, Dr. Fuchs told me that I would need restylane and it would cost $600 for a full vial. When I saw Berzin, she told me I would only need $300 for a half-vial. She didn't try to rip me. Plus, she has fraxel. I havent used her for Fraxel though, but she told me that I should only expect 30% improvement at best if I do it. she is also starting to experiment with Sculptra. Anyway, Berzin is my main doctor.

But, I also see Dr. Adrian, who i will probably go to for Fraxel, simply because I like his location better (he is in VA and I live in VA).

nice to see other metro area ppl here, i'd like to find a good scar doc myself. so far, they look all the same. to be honest, I think its all hit or miss. Even dr. berzin i am not too too hot on--she doesn't specialize in scars (for example, she also recommended the horrendous thermage treatment).

yes dr. adrian has an OFFICE in VA but he only performs the fraxel laser in his dc. office

he does not impress me at all and i could barely understand his assistant when i spoke with her.

Hmmm... I didnt know that, thought I could do it in VA.

did you have fraxel done? why didnt adrian impress? have you had any good experiences with docs here in DC regarding scar revision?

dr. adrian had his assistant talk to me for about 15 min. before he came in for a very QUICK consultation. basically told me the price, when i could do it (cause i was on accutane at the time) and sent me on my way to the front desk to pay the $175 consultation fee.

i called dr. gerrish's offices, got a voice mail, and the dr. called me back himself. you rarely hear of that. usually they will have an assistant or nurse call the prospective patient back.

he spent a good 15 min. just on the phone, explaining the procedure and being very informative about the whole laser itself. super impressed and personable. i have an appt. with him mon. morning in manassas.

he charges $1100 per treatment but sounds he could be very flexible with seetings and amount of passes he could do for optimal results.

$1100 is outrageous... in the area, you can easily find treatments for much less.

what if you buy "in bulk"? does he discount? as nice as a doc may be, its really too much if its $1,100 per treatment and might be a clue about the guy's trustworthiness int hef irstplace.

i'm going to see Berzin again sometime soon and I'll see what she says. I know she charges in the neighborhood of $800/treatment but discounts them if you buy a set.

Ouch, $1100 for one treatment of fraxel! Does he do any other scar procedures? You would think that being 45 minutes outside of the city that it would be cheaper. i know there is a lady that does fraxel in fredericksburg if you're willing to travel that far. don't know the price but i remember she was the cheapest for smoothbeam 2 years ago. i'm still trying to figure out why i went to dr. ali.

yeah i had a consultation with dr. morris's assistant in fredericksburg. wasn't impressed at all with her. couldn't even provide me with before and after photos b/c the laser is so new at her office.

they ONLY do 4 sessions, @ $3200 b/c she says it's protocol with reliant and doesn't seem like they would experiment with higher settings due to lasck of experience with the fraxel laser. but yes they are cheaper.

if you read the fraxel thread people are seeing great results with 5 to 6 super high setting sessions.

dr. ali was such a waste of my time and money.

Ziggy, you've been all over the place.

The good thing about the DC metro area is that there are lots of choices to choose from. The bad thing is that many are duds. So let's keep the information flowing between us throughout the future.

i found my dr!

i had an appt. with dr. gerrish in manassas (he's also in vienna) he was super informative, professional, and took his time answering all my questions.

he is #4 dr. in the country that has done the most fraxel laser on patients. he has seen excellent results in acne scarring improvement. i mentioned to him that ppl on this board has seen excellent results with higher settings and lower amount of passes but from his extensive experience he says that he's seeing better results with just the opposite, lower the setting and more passes.

now my scarring that bothers me the most are on my forehead so our first treatment will be a full face ( less aggressive on the lower half of my face b/c i want to save my freckles) and more aggressive on my forehead.

the following treatments will be just my forehead. he only recommends 3 treatments at first send you home and come back 4-5 mo. later to see how you feel about the results if at that time you feel like you could use more treatments then he will go ahead with more treatments.

he is a little pricey but i feel like you get what you pay for and with his extensive knowledge and experience with this laser i feel like i'm in good hands.

i'm so excited.
