Mac, I'm sure if you went to a laser specialist you would be lucky to get out of there without having laser treatment. On the other hand if you went to a derm that didn't have a laser, you'd probably get some topicals/antibiotics/accutane/etc...

Regarding lasers...

Actually, my dermatologist mentioned that with my cystic acne, I had two options: go on Accutane, or be zapped with the laser. Here are the pros and cons:

Accutane:

Pro:

Covered by most major insurance companies.

90% success rate after one year; 75% success after two years.

Nearly all relapses are not as severe.

Con:

120-180 day treatment.

It sucks. Every day sucks. Some days suck worse.

Your skin is so dry you become a walking loofah.

Your acne may temporarily worsen during treatment.

If you're female, there are many, many more concerns.

Laser:

Pro:

Instantaneous results (acne dissipates in a few days after treatment).

Con:

Most patients relapse in six months.

It usually takes about four treatments to remove all acne.

It's really painful, and you have to cover yourself in some weird liquid beforehand. Also, treatment usually takes about an hour each session.

It costs about $250/treatment, and since it's cosmetic, you have to pay out of pocket.

And you choose accutane?
