I'm pretty sure Dermatologists prescribe Accutane. I'm not sure that a General Practitioner can give it out.

Dermatologist specialise in skin conditions, they're by far better to see for acne.

My regular doctor said most general practitioners refuse to perscribe it because of the possible complications & side effects involved. Sooooooooo....basically they want to shift liability to someone else (i.e. : dermatologists).

Dermatologists are better - they almost always have more experience with acne in general and Accutane in particular. An Accutane course requires some artistry from the doctor - your dosage and treatment duration must be individually balanced depending on your response and the intensity of your side effects, so you want your doctor to be very familiar with the treatment and it's possible permutations.

I think in the UK only Derms can prescribe Accutane. In the US, with the new rules, going to a derm would probably be a safer bet to get a prescription. In Canada, it doesn't matter - GP or Derm. Also, in Canada, you'll probably have to wait a month or longer to see a derm - meh, at least its free.
