DERMS DONT GIVE A CRAP ABOUT YOU!

I waited for 2 WHOLE MONTHS for a derm appointment and guess what..IT TOOK LESS THAN 3 MINS TO FINISH!

He just looked at my face and asked me what i took in the past. Then he IMMEDIATELY perscribed 2 things without explaining wat they are and told me how to use them.. And he just said "and we'll see in 2 months how things go ok?". Oh my god...I even tried to plot a scene of crying be4 i went into the room to see if he would perscribe me some strong stuff...

LIKE WTF

I was once perscribed accutane by my family doctor(i asked him). At the end i didnt take it becuz my parents wanted advice from a derm first. Well...what do you know, they're SPECIALISTS but they dont really help you that much. i asked him 2 questions about the drug and about acne, pores, etc, and when i was about to ask more he just had to leave. Shouldnt derms ask u stuff like "is it affecting you emotionally alot?" "how long have u had acne for?" and all that stuff? I was definitely not expecting this, 3 mins to see the derm and 2 more months to wait to see him again for 3 mins..anyone with similar experiances?

neways, He perscribed me tretinoin and minocycline. Are they good?

BUT DAMN, 100 BUCKS! I THOUGHT IT WAS MUCH CHEAPER THAN ACCUTANE! U dont have to take it forever rite? or is it like a TREATMENT?

Tretinoin is a topical retinoid (Accutane is a systemic retinoid) and the other is an antibiotic. The two used in tandem can clear mild to moderate acne, but you have to stick with it, you have to be prepared for an initial breakout, and you should slowly build up to using it daily. Start with every other day or every third day applications, particularly with the retinoid. If he didn't mention it, don't use them both at once - use one morning and one evening.

If you really, truly feel like your derm doesn't care about you, find another derm. Mine is extremely busy, with many patients, and i had to wait a long time to get an appointment. She doesn't spend a lot of time with me at the appointments either, but i certainly think she cares.

If you think he doesn't care because he prescribed a conventional treatment which often gets acne under control instead of questioning you closely or jumping straight to Accutane - i think you might be over reacting a bit. Seeing you again in two months is a bit early, it will take three months to really determine if the topicals are working.

Derms are all different. Mine is pretty supportive and returns calls for any quesitons I have immediatly. It DOES seem overpriced, but hey, they're the ones that went to school. Your job is finding one who makes sure you're okay.

i love that my appointments are so short! i go on my lunch breatk...but if i have actual concerns they always talk to me about it, i just have to make sure i don't let them jet out of there!

2 months wait??? thats crazy!!! look for clinics in your area maybe? i go to a skin care clinic, i get same day apointments that way.

I felt that way about my last derm. He was maybe with me for about five minutes, tops. He didn't really seem to do much in the way of giving me advice or actually looking at my skin. He just threw prescriptions at me.

If I go back to a derm for any reason, I'm going to go to someone different. But I'm honestly not about to get on any more prescription medications. Been there, done that.

You know ... I've been to several derms over the years. Some good and some bad. Sometimes it seems like they can't be bothered with acne. I don't know if it's frustration because it's so hard to actually do anything with acne, or they just don't feeling like dealing with something so *trivial*(I don't mean I think it's trivial ... believe me). I've also had the derm before that I felt was just throwing scripts at me. Every time I'd go in, I'd say ... look, no improvement, and I'd leave w/some new script. Who knows. There's no requirement that says you have to have a personality to be a doctor. Maybe they're just lacking in the bedside manner area. I have also on the other hand seen derms that I felt good with, and that I felt actually wanted to help. So ... just like everything else, there's good and there's bad. You just have to find one that meets your needs.

No, they didn't. Not long term. I tried Retin A, but it just turned me horribly red and it felt like my face was burning. I was on minocyline for a while, and while it may have did a little bit in the beginning, I knew I couldn't take them long term and I got off of them this summer. I'm so glad I'm not on them anymore. I still had acne while taking them, so I felt like I was wasting my time.

The only thing I was ever prescribed that gave me good results (for about a year) was a cream called Rosula. But it seemed to grow less effective after that first year and eventually I had to quit because it wasn't doing anything for me anymore.

My doctor (not a derm) prescribed me Benzaclin but I didn't fill the prescription because it was BP and I have BP at my house. He also prescribed me minocyline but I told him I'd tried them and didn't want to go back on any of those kind of pills.

Right now I'm not taking anything. I'm only using a light amount of 2.5 BP at night and exfoliating. I hope I can get away with that.

Hensiko, my derm is like that too. The only time we spoke for more than 5 minutes was during my first visit. He also makes $100 an hour and during my last visit, it lasted like 5 minutes (less maybe?). WTF?! I'm glad he prescribed me the Accutane but the didn't even say when I should take it, or when I should come back. I had to ask an assistant at what time of the day I should take the drug. Most doctors only care about the $ and not the patient. What a shame.

it depends on the derm. i have had 3 derms.

the first one was a woman. i had her for about 3months. she was very nice and examined my skin and i was doing well with what she gave me. she left on maternity leave.

my second one was a male. i went to after my acne all of the sudden started going crazy. i was prescribed accutane by him. he was the WORST derm ever. he never explained anything to me and showed no compassion

i got depressed while on accutane and requested a new derm. another woman. she is the best dermatologist ever. she listens to me talk and answer all my question completely. sometimes i spend up to 30 min just talking with her during an appointment.

not all derms suck. just hang in there and find a good one and keep him/her.

PERHAPS (just perhaps) they would care more if you had skin cancer or some other debilitating disease. There is not much else they can do for acne besides prescribe products and say come back in a few months. What did you expect?

I agree. Pretty much every derm I have ever seen has done nothing but make my acne worse. I saw one again for the first time in 10 years and she made me so upset that I think I will write a letter to her and the main derm in the office to complain. Doubt it will do any good but it will make me feel somewhat better.

Its like you are describing my derm. Then they have the nerve to charge your $125 for a 3 minute visit.

I noticed that he only works a few hours a day, 4 days a week.

hey, do we have the same derm..lol.

Actually my derm keeps trying to get me to take other antibotics even though the ones I was on previously didn't work. How many times to I have to tell him I don't want antibotics, before he listens. But no, I always leave with a script for one. He did give the thumbs up on b5, but wanted me to take an antibotic in conjuntion with that. Not healthy, I would think.

Also, he think accutane is poison. Jeez.

Ive experience that every time I go to my derma. I sit in the room waiting for him longer than I actually consult with him. I was on benzaclin and locoid for over a year and it never really worked wonders for me. The last three minutes i saw him I told him that i was unhappy with my results. I think its fair to complain spending 89$ every three months on benzaclin and another 30 for the locoid. He didnt even look closely at my skin last time and decided to put me on erythromycin and cloderm. Now from what i hear the body builds up resistances towards antibiotics like erthromycin. Im happy my skin is getting a little better but the way it sounds its not going to last.

When I lived in NJ I had the best derm around, he took out his magnifier and looked over my skin unclogged my pores talked with me about anything, my visit would last about 20 mins with him, now I live in Pick your nose (I mean the poconos) and there is only one derm here who doesn't even look at my face just prescribes whatever and sends me on my way. This time I told him I want a med that will work, I sounded pissed off and he gave me something different!
