i have been viewing this forum for awhile and it seems that eveyone

is young. is there anybody who is over 40?

i suffered from severe cyctic acne for 25 years and thought when

it was finally cleared up everything would be fine.

but the scars that it left make me more depressed.

life has been passing me by and i can't seem to get on for the ride.

i am so self concious and i can't find anything that will help.

psychiatrists, counselors and medication don't seem to do the trick.

i am really tired.

thanks

Hey hang in there! I may not be over 40 yet, but I am pushing 39, and also have scarring that is

beginning to worry my vanity as my skin ages-- and I still break out and get nasty cysts every

once in awhile. There are quite a few older folk on the forum. I know what you mean about doctors,

etc. My GP tells me you should just have some peels. Previous counselors said stuff like "what scarring? I think this is all in your head," while derms cringe when they see me and say, "why didn't you take accutane when you were younger? Your acnes isn't so bad, but this scarring is significant." Also whenever I go to a new doctor they always mention my skin and ask what I've tried. So I understand, keep your chin up!

Yea hang in there pal, you dont have much longer. Look at it this way... You are halfway dead!

That is fucked up. Get lost, troll.

Kentucky--it sounds like you need to catch up on life. It's not too late to turn it all around. Have you ever seen American Beauty? If you haven't I highly recommend it. I'm surprised even professional psychological treatment hasn't helped. Have you tried sticking with it? I know for a fact that anti-depressants don't work unless they are used very consistently.

You might be suffering from body dysmorphic disorder. This is a really great website: www.bddcentral.com It also has a message board

Hey, cowpoke,

I believe there comes a point in a man's life where he just has to own those scars. Like, get a nice suit and a haircut, or a leather jacket or some gold teeth or something and just be the scars. It's doable for guys. (I feel so bad for women with acne scars, because I believe they have it so much worse.)

Even if your scars are severe, you can do it. Like that guy Viktor Yushchenko. His face is a fucking mess, but he's the president of his own backward country. (Yes, I'm talking about Australia. There I said it.)

Don't be self conscious. Just accept that you aren't going to win any beauty pageants. Accept that you aren't a pretty boy. But who the hell cares? I'm sure you've got other things going on in your life. You're self conscious because you're trying to derive self worth from your appearance. You're setting yourself up for failure. Just cede that ground. Find some other way to get some confidence going. Play to your strengths. Your active acne is gone, so at least you have your dignity.

I'm interested, though. What do your psychiatrists and counselors tell you about dealing with your scars? Or do they just throw medication at you?

Good luck.

Paul

I AM BIPOLAR IT IS A SIDE EFFECT OF ACNE VULGARIS

Being bipolar doesn't give you a ticket to being a complete arsehole to someone, especially after you have a go at someone for making rude comments. I don't see how you being bipolar is relevant!?

i have been in counseling for about 6 years.

my counselor always says "it's not that bad" which doesn't really help.

I think that's their classic response to something like this.

as for the meds i take them faithfully and have tried different ones

they work for awhile then things fall apart again.

thanks

i think he was only trying ti lighten up the mood...

Hi there, I am not 40 but am depressed and in counselling and on drugs, so maybe i can relat e alittle bit.

They are not orking for me either, so i don't know what to do.

You should ask your therapist about cognitive behavoiural therapy, i believe both our problems stem from how we view our scars (my scars are in my gallery have a look). I think the internal dialogue in our heads have to change...
