My subcision experience

Recommended Posts

I have been coming to these boards for several months now and must say that I don't feel so alone anymore like I once did. This is my first time to post. It didn't seem right for me to take from this board and not give something back.

About 3 years ago I had CO2 laser surgery believing it was the miracle I had been waiting for. Like so many others here, I found it a big diappointment, as well as a brutal recovery.

Exactly 1 week ago I underwent subcision. I found a doctor in Tulsa, Oklahoma after many months of researching the procedure and numerous doctors. This doctor I found is so compassionate and he did not get in any hurry. I had most of my face subcised excluding my forehead. He would apologize each time he injected the lidocaine. It took him about 1 hour and 45 minutes.

I was swollen for a good 5 days. Putting on make-up was not an option due to the tenderness, although he said that I could if I wanted.

It is too early to give results. Like others who have had this done, I loved the look of my skin while it was edematous. I did not take pictures but my doctor did and I will see about getting access to them at my follow-up appointment.

I am also using copper peptide serum from Skin Biology as a collagen booster. Time will tell. One thing is for sure, I'm never giving up.

Thanks to all,

Cynthiana :D

Cynthiana,

Thanks for letting us know about your experience. I'm considering the same treatment(subcision) and am looking for a doctor closer to me than Dr. Rapaport(in New Jersey).

If you don't mind my asking, what is your doc's name in Oklahoma? He would be much closer to me.

Thanks

Hi Louis,

My doctors name is Dr. David Minor. He seems very knowledgeable about acne scars and also seems genuinely concerned. Also he is not the least bit arrogant. Good luck to you.

Cynthiana.

Cynthiana,

Would you be so kind as to post the cost. Do you have to be seen by the MD and then make a seperate appointment for the procedure? Or can it be done at the same time? I hope you will keep us informed as to the progress.

I had my initial appointment with a cost of $50. My subcision was scheduled for 6 weeks later. After the subcision procedure he zapped areas of my skin, which were reddened from scarring, with a pulsed dye laser. (These once reddened areas had been there for years) The $50 consultation fee was subtracted from the total cost leaving a balance of $700. I have extensive scarring , mostly rolling type, as well as many shallow icepick scars. The outer parts of my chin and my cheeks were the worst.

Hi dancin please tell me about your excision that got worse? did the doctor perform 2 layer stich, the first layer(outside stich and the second layer(inside stich which is absorbable)? Excision is got only for a qualified plastic surgeon not a dermatologist

Last April i went to a dermatologist to excise 1 scar(a boxscar), but she did not perform any inside stich, so after 14 long hours 2 stiches tore apart the bledding last for 6 hours. After a week my scar got worse than the original scar. The redding last for 2 months. I do wanna have them re-excise on the same scar after 3 months.

I have consulted now at least 7 plastic surgeons. Some surgeons told me that inside stich is lacking so there is a tendency that the stiches from the first layer to tore apart. These is a site contains some excision of skin cancer:

skincancerinfo.com

check this out, these all excision pictures has a 2 layer stich.

Hi dancin, please share with me why your excision got worse?

Lonelyman you might need several subcisions because it sounds like the scar tissue might of reattached from underneath making the area depressed again. Have you seen other docs about the procedure. Don't give up on it yet. A subcision every 3 months for 6 months might work for you. How many treatments did you have. Some people get 5 subcisions or more.

My doc did not perform 2-layer stitching. I had 8 sites done and everyone of them became infected. Was determined to be a reaction to the stitch material. I found this odd, as I have had to have stitches many times (absorbing, nonabsorbing and even metal staples) and never had a reaction before. All of the areas excised became larger. A few months later, I had to see a Derm (a specialist in Mohs procedure) for basal cell cancer on my nose (of course!). Anyway, he was one of the most caring MDs I have ever met. He said subcision was what should have been done. Keep in mind, this was over 5 years ago. This MD was practicing at a teaching medical center. They always seem to be on top of the latest and greatest. And the scar on my nose is barely visible - he made every effort to follow the natural nostril crease and still get all of the cancer. Please note that I am not trying to be discouraging. But, I am not the only person that was had a problem with excision. Many on this board and others can attest to that. Take care.

dancin,

Since he said subcision should have been done excision obviously wasn't the right method. There are some types of scars that subcision can't improve (often ice picks) where excision is performed instead. What type of scars did you have?

I have numerous boxcar and two icepick scars. One ice pick was turned into a boxcar scar and the other is now a huge ice pick. All boxcar scars are larger than they were.

I have read a couple of posts stating that people are using CP and Emu oil after subcision. People who are getting subcision done need to understand that you want swelling. The more swelling the better!!!

I don't mean to pick on anyone, but Maya said she put an enormous amount of emu oil on after her subcision. It's improvement to let the subcision procedure heal all by itself without using any CP or EMU OIL. Arnica is the only thing you should take.

Why is that? The CP serum helps with collagen growth, Emu oil stopped the pain (and swelling I think) - along with taking arnica tablets (stopping the bruising) and bromelain enzymes helped stop swelling too.

My subcised pits have improved by around 10% I would say and it's been around 2 weeks.

The CP serum and and Vit.C will Neutralize each other when used together. You have to be careful not to use any Moisturizer that has Vit.C in it after applying the CP serum.

It has been 21 days since I had my subcision done and I must say I am very happy with the results so far. The swelling has long since subcided and I continue to use the CP serum. Recently I have added a 15% glycolic gel with aloe vera from homepeels and I love this stuff. I am also cleansing with whipped camphor. My husband says he sees a considerable difference in my skin and I agree. I set out for an improvement in my skin condition with realistic expectations and I am very pleased with my results thus far. O:)

is it true that if you do subsicion for about three times the idents will fill up and nearly disappear? I only have about 5 indentions in my whole face all on the left jawline...They are shallow and they are definetly rolling scars..no ice pick and boxcar.....Will subscion bring me the best improvement followed by n-lite laser...considereing that i only have a small area and they are not really deep....

Tell me what u think plz

My derm told me that with subcision, if it it going to work for an individual, it will be seen with the first procedure. In other words, the best results will be seen with the first round. If more are performed, they probably won't be as dramatic as with the first. This is his opinion from his experience anyway. And yes, I think you would be a perfect canidate for subcision. I don't have any experience with N-Lite but many here report good results, especially after subcision.

FiReBoY: I think that subcision/N-Lite combination is a good route to take for shallow rolling scars. I would schedule appointments with several different Dermatologists and/or Plastic Surgeons and see what they have to say about your scars in particular.

No, excision and subcision are completely different.

If you read the FAQ thread at the top of the Scar Board, there are some definitions of different procedures we discuss here.

Hate to revive an old thread but, I was wondering how some other people's experiences with subcision have been? I've read some of the testimonials on the first page and it looks like there are mixed results. I've also read OursFan's journal. I have a lot of rolling scars on the right side of my face and a few on the left side. I'm only 20 years old though so i'm hoping that now will be the best time to have it done. Because of this thread, I have made an appointment with this same Dr. in Tulsa. Wish me luck!

Good Luck and Welcome! Subcision is supposed to work best on rolling scars, so you are on the right track. As with EVERY SINGLE scar treatment, results are highly individualized depending on your body's biochemistry and healing properties. The only way to know if your body responds to this type of procedure is to try it! Just remember that if you see an appreciable difference after the first subcision (after the swelling subsides), it means this treatment IS working for you, but you still may need subsequent treatments to reach your desired goal. Best of luck to you and keep us all posted. Cheers!
