Hey guys

A little bit about myself and all the crap I have tried over the years. Basically I have had acne since about 13, and I never took anything for it till I was 22 hoping that I would grow out of it. I currently have mild to sometimes moderate acne on my face/neck, shoulders and back.

I have tried loads of antibiotics, lots of creams, and for a long period vitamin B5 overdose. Whilst all of these things might improve the appreance of acne and may stop it very slightly they are not a cure so I have decided to go on accutane.

Now Im from the UK and the Health service here regarding acne is a joke, firstly you have to try every lame antibiotic under the sun, and then they will refer you to a specialist (dermatologist) which can take 4 months, and then you might not even get accutane. After having bad communication problems with doctors I have decided to do what many others are doing and thats self medicating. I know the risks so no lectures please, I have read up lots on this.

Right so I got my accutane today, 30 x 20mg. I have decided to go on a low dose for 1 month to reduce the chance of a major breakout and to allow to my body to get used to accutane before really thrashing my body with it. My plan is to build up the dosage over 6 months. So month 1 = 20mg a day, month 2 40 mg a day, month 3 60 mg a day, and for months 4-6 80 mg a day. I weigh 70kg or just under and its a general rule to build up to 1mg per kg of body weight.

Thanks for reading, take care!

Hi droog,

Best of luck with your accutane journey. I am just under two weeks through mine and started on 40mg. All is well at the moment no intial breakout and currently only two active spots! This is probably due to taking the tetracyclines which you warned me about, but have had no side effects. I have extremely sore lips and I am trying desperately hard not to let them crack (loads of vaseline, lip sos cream and chap stick). I have noticed a reduction in oil secretion but hopefully it will continue to decrease throughout my time on accutane. Im not really sure how long to stay on the course. I have a two month supply on 40mg a day. I'm also not sure if I should up the dosage towards the end of the treatment. Any thoughts welcome. Are you taking Acnotin?

Thanks

paintme.

Hey droog, thank god I found this thread. I want to get on accutane in the worst way and like you I have done more than my fair share of research and can't stand having to wait for the derm, but where do you purchase the acutal accutane drug?

Please reply soon so I can get on it as soon as possbile

Thanks.

Droog, I have recently jumped on the self-medicate wagon too. I am waiting for my isotane (generic of accutane) to arrive. I should have it by Thursday of next week. I have also done much research. Actually, the dosage parameters are actually anywhere between .5mg to 2.2 mg per kg of body weight. So you could certainly go even higher than 1mg/kg of body weight and still be withing the recommended dosage range. Now, in terms of the TOTAL dose for the entire course, it is recommended that it be between 120 and 150 mg/kg of body weight. So a person who is 70kg (which is equivalent to 155 pounds), as I am, should take anywhere between (120x70)=8,400mg and (150x70)=10,500mg total throughout the entire course. So make sure you tweak your dosage and duration of treatment so that you fall within these parameters. Studies show that there is a decrease in post-therapy relapse if you maintain between this dosage range. However, there is no added benefit beyond 150mg/kg so this should be the total dosage maximum.

Since I am approx. 70kg like you (155 pounds), I am starting out from the gate with 80mg per day: 40mg in the day, and 40mg in the evening, both with meals.

Low dosing will stretch out the length of time you have to be on the treatment, however, I understand that you want to "ease" into the treatment gradually. The risk of teratogenicity (toxicity) will be the same no matter what the dose, but the side effects will be minimal or non-existent at such a low dose, which I suspect is your purpose.

I look forward to keeping up with your log, and will post my results once my accutane arrives. Sad thing is my web supplier will stop selling Accutane altogether on 10-1-05 shock.gif and their prices were the MOST REASONABLE ones I found on the web! So I had to go back on their site tonight and order all the rest of the pills that I will need for the full four month course. I am out of a LOT of cash eusa_doh.gif And all because I can't find a dermatologiat who is willing to simply PRESCRIBE it to me. Then it would be NO COST to me, aside from a $10 copay! Oy Evay. The derms would rather keep us on antibiotics for years, THEN decide to use accutane. That's more lucrative for them than just putting us on accutane from the start.

Hi

Its amazing that so many people have the same problems as me, thank god for the internet and the ability to take things in our own hands.

Thanks to jazzy for that information, yea you guessed right I really wanna build it up due to the side effects. I aint keen on having a breakout and this is what I'm hoping to avoid it.

One of my major concerns is drinking alcohol whilst on accutane, I usually have quite a few beers at the weekend. This weekend I have a couple of events lined up where I will be drinking a fair bit, lets see how I cope biggrin.gif

Thanks for reading, nothing has really happened yet, Im sure it will tho!

Peace

Well, I'm not so sure about the certainty of an initial breakout. I have been following a few logs on here (actually, still following) and have come upon several logs where persons are actually concerned because they haven't received an initial breakout..and this is after anywhere between 4-6 months after starting treatment, depending on which log you read. There is one log where the gal is worried that because she hasn't experienced an initial breakout, her accutane is not working shock.gif Now maybe she didn't have much to begin with, like you hypothesize, that i don't know. But as you surf these pages on here, it is very interesting to hear about the idiosyncratic experiences people have with accutane. Sad thing is, as we each get clear, we will probably never look back to this community again...... cry.gif

Jazzy you seem to know your stuff, its good to hear someone talk without trying to scare the shit outta people which is what quite a lot of users here do.

I've decided to totally quit alcohol whilst doing this treatment which I am going to find hard going because every aspect of my social life involves drinking, ah well fuck it, I got something to look forward to when Im cured.

Ok so its been 4 days and nothing has happened, by the way i totally stopped taking minocycline which i was on 100mg a day. I am pretty darn sure that stuff made things worse. Antibiotics are the devil i tell ya!

Hi. Good luck to you guys.

I would recommend that you take a blood test at some point to check your cholesterol and your liver enzymes. You run the risk of very very serious health issues if things go wrong and you dont see it.

I would probably drop all alcohol and other bad stuff to be on the safe side.

What do you know about low-dose maintenance therapy?

Right now i'm on 20 mg/day (82 kg, lean) (i had pretty mild, but persistand superficial acne). Probably do that for 10 months.

My side effect is redness, even at this low dose i have noticable redness thats why i'm afraid to up the dose.

My dad is a doctor and he said it would be fine (but i dont think he knows much about accutane) to take it for a long term as long as the blood test come in ok. Is this true?

I might take 20 mg for a year to get enough of it in my system...

Or i might stop at eight months and take 10 mg a couple of days a week to keep it at bay...

What do you guys think about it?

Anyway, good luck to you, but be carefull !

Here in belgium it wasnt very hard to get accutane, maybe cause of my that too. I went to the derm, she looked at it for 10 mins, i said i tried everything, she then wanted to try differin, but when i asked for accutane she said ok. Now i'm clear (accutane works wonders for me, i think my skin is very sensitive to it, but with redness).

Hi

Im not sure if for accutane to work is that you have to take a certain ammount of it over a perdiod of time or to take a lot of it at once to cure?

How long did it take for you on 20mg to see a nice difference?

No site, hence I was saying "I'm not sure"

I will elabourate on my point. For the person to be cured they must take a certain ammount of accutane over a period of time, now I was saying I'm not sure if say you can take a lower dose for a long period and achieve the same results as someone taking a higher dose over a shorter period of time.

Ive gotten some good information off these sites, which are 100% genuine logs of dermatologists talking about various things to do with accutane:

http://dermatology.cdlib.org/rxderm-archives/accutane-acne

remove the /accutane-acne to view all the other good information

Its day 6 and I'm starting to dry out, my skin is really dry after a shower and my lips feel more sensitive.

11 days now

I swore to myself that i would not drink alcohol whislt doing this medicating, well last night i had a whole bottle of vodka 70cl. I was soo Ill today! You think I would learn by now not to hammer it so bad.

Finally the tane seems to be working a bit, less oily and my lips are every so slightly drying up! nothing drastic else happening but I thought i wouldwrite this to keep active.

Couple of things Im planning to do, 1 is get a huge tattoo on my right forearm, but Im a bit worried is the accutane might have some bad effect with it.

Also Im gonna start Brazillian jujitsu because it seems like a fun thing to do eusa_dance.gif

Peace out

14 days now, so two weeks completed!

I have no more active acne for the first time in Ages! skin is a bit dry after showering but apart from this I feel fine.

I'm interested in seeing how my body will cope when i up the doseage to 40mg in a couple of weeks time.

I must admit I find it quite boring writing this log as theres nothing really interesting to say. So gimme some replies, or questions to motive me lol.gif

I couldnt be bothered with the doctors in England they are jokers! Unless you are a drug addict with aids they will not help you! Acne is very very embarrasing for me, I won't go out some days and Im 24 i wanna be enjoying my life.

I drink something called Pomegranate juice which is very famous for its antioxidant qualities, i bet this will help keep my liver in check. it tastes quite nice also I reccomend you all try it.

Hi Jazzy, Im glad youre still reading my log.

Right is been 18 days now, I've cleared up almost completely. It doesnt seem real but it is. confidence has increased 100% and I'm really enjoying this whole clear skin thing.

I'm not using any special products yet just pappaya soap which is amazing at removing red marks. Ive not experienced any side effects at all, just a little dryness of the lips.

This stuff is a miracle!
