My Minocycline, Duac, Differin Log beginning June 17, 2003

Recommended Posts

Day One was Tuesday, June 17. Used Differin in evening and took one minocycline tablet, 100 mg. The mino made me very woozy and put me to sleep. The Differin made facial skin a bit more oily and brought black- and whiteheads to surface. Had bad headache all day.

Day Two was Wednesday, June 18. Used Duac in morning and was very oily all day. However, the one large pimple, already healing, that was on my cheek completely dried up, scabbed over, and healed in one day! The mino made me sleepy again. Had headache half day.

Day Three is today, Thursday, June 19. Dr.'s orders to skip creams and use only mino. Took mino last night and felt fine. Feel fine today, mild headache and 8-[ a little edginess. Overall happy feeling. Less oily, fewer breakouts already. Prepared for reactions but none so far. I am allergic to very little.

Day Three (continued), June 19, 2003: Noticably less oil on forehead, some dryness. Will use more moisturizer. Skipped Duac and Differin per doc's orders (every other day for first week) but did take minocycline. Mino still making me woozy and mild headache but getting better each day.

Day Four, June 20, 2003: Markedly less oil. Used light moisturizer with SPF 15 (The Body Shop), w/Seaweed and oil absorption. Used Duac this morning and took mino at 8 pm last night. Side effects are fading. Skin visibly clearer. Very happy and surprised at progress. Will use Differin tonight. Have not noticed undue dryness, redness. Very minimal flaking. Kind of like a slow, slow, chemical peel. I like this idea!

Day Five, Saturday, June 21: Very little wooziness from minocycline (one 100mg per day tablet). A little drying and flaking from Duac. Slightly pink skin after application. One pimple on cheek near nose.

Day Six, Sunday, June 22: Mild dryness, no pimples, few blackheads. Pores appearing smaller each day! Oil under control though still some breakthrough. Need to use fewer blotting tissues (maybe 3 per day where I was using 10 before!) Very few side effects. Quite happy with regimen. :D/

Day 7, June 23, 2003: Skin starting to flake, feels a little dry. Mild headache most of the day. Still quite oily but not as bad as before. Small bumps on forehead, otherwise clear. Doing Duac in a.m., Differin in p.m., and 100 mg. minocycline daily.

Day 8, June 24, 2003: Skin stinging a little, still flaky. Still oily but no other bumps. Chest clear and back nearly clear. Most blackheads gone. Bad headache and dizziness today. Probably need to eat more or better! Same meds as above. Started using Clarins skin care samples last night. VERY refreshing so far.

Hello --haven't had time to report in 3 days or so, but here goes, and next week I will just post weekly instead of daily.

EVERY DAY, I wash in a.m. with Paul Mitchell Tea Tree soap in the shower and in the p.m. I alternate between Neutrogena Foaming Cleanser and Clarins Cleansing Milk. I wear makeup so plain soap is not enough to remove it. I use Clarins alcohol-free Purifying Toner after cleansing. Bumpy on the forehead despite daily use of Duac and Differin, and continuing with 100 mg minocycline daily. The bumps are just small reddish things under the skin. Sometimes they turn into whiteheads or small blackheads and wash off or rub off very easily. It is like the bad junk is coming to the surface and then out! That's a good thing, I guess. Otherwise, pores appear a little smaller and skin is clearer and tighter overall. Minimal dryness and flakiness. Highly recommend using moisturizer at night (I use Clarins Hydra Matte) over the Differin and sunscreen during the day (I use The Body Shop Shine Control SPF 15) over the Duac.

Still oily but not as bad as before. Still get a little wacked out and a mild headache from mino but improving.

This is being reported within Week 4 about Week 3:

Facial skin is bumpy and uneven, still quite oily all over, and very lightly peeling or flaking outside T-zone. Chest and back are totally clear! Still have 2-3 pimples on the face, mostly on chin just under lip or on upper forehead at hairline, though some clogged pores on cheeks. Cannot tolerate much facial makeup such as thick powders or liquid foundations so mostly use pressed powder as makeup and blotting tissues for touch ups. Still using Duac in am, Differin in pm and 100 mg minocycline per day. Want to stop Differin because not really working at all! Will wait until I see derm again around August 15-20 and ask for Retin-A in pm instead of Differin, which is making me oilier somehow. At my age (36) I think I need the Retin-A anyway due to lines, roughness, and thickening of skin.

hey I saw your post in my log, do you think that this could be an initial break out? I heard that an initial breakout only should happen with Accutane and not with other antibiotics since the principal with an antibiotic is for them to kill acne bacteria on contact and not to excrete oil from the skin.

Good point, I don't think I should be breaking out either but it has gotten steadily worse each day since about two weeks ago. I am seriously considering going back on the birth control pill since my skin was great then and I seriously miss it. My face looks absolutely horrible now. Red, swollen, bumpy, greasy. I hate it. To top it off I have a bad headache every day, too. Nope, I will do the pill or go natural/Dan's regimen after this (about a month or two from now)...

Week 5 was the ultimate nightmare for anyone taking prescription meds AND HAVING WORST BREAKOUTS, ever!

My headaches got drastically worse. On July 3 through July 17, I had a migraine headache that came and went every other day. That's nearly two full weeks! I took Excedrin Migraine until it no longer worked. I dropped the Differin back on about July 1 because it was making me oilier and my skin was slack. Then, the Duac made my skin extremely dry, lined, and if one pressed against my cheek near my nose with one's finger, it would make an impression that stayed there! Horrors!

So, I stopped the minocycline on July 17 and use Duac in the a.m. only. I use Neutrogena salicylic acid treatment in the p.m. and I use Clarins Hydra Matte oil free moisture night and day. The improvement has been dramatic in only 4 days. Before that, I had 20, count 'em, 20 red pimples on my face. Chest and back are still crystal clear.

I have purchased Nature's Sunshine colloidal silver, herbal Noni juice, MSM, and zinc tablets all for my skin, and feverfew herb for my headaches. I will make a follow-up with the derm August 15 but after that I WILL DO MY HERBS AND DAN'S REGIMEN ONLY!

LEARN FROM MY EXPERIENCE: if you go to a derm, turn down any pills and take the topicals only. Ask for samples to save some money. Then take herbs!

Just because something doesnt work for one person, doesnt mean it wont work for everyone. if that was the case...we would all be clear because someone would have found something that works for them, (bp) and that means it would have to work for everyone.

Take me for instance, right now I am on retin a micro. I am clearing slowly. But other people have reported HORRIBLE results from retin a micro. Just proves that not everything works the same for everyone simply becuase like DNA, everyone acne is differnt.

I just wanted to say that bcause i dont want people to read this and then be scared when thier derm prescribes them pills.

No offense towards you.

I stand by my stance of not taking prescription drugs unless it is a life threatening case. I have had the experience, over the last three years, of going to at least 9 specialists for various illnesses and in every single case I have been prescribed internal medications that did much more harm than good, and in some cases no good at all. I have permanent nerve damage, bone damage, and a hiatal hernia all due to medications that I was on for a short period of time and there are countless millions who are also damaged like me. THERE ARE NO PRESCRIPTION MEDICINES WITHOUT SIDE EFFECTS. PERIOD.

We as a society have strayed too far from what is right and natural for us and are looking for quick fixes, and in this pursuit have become worse rather than better with our health, and that is a proven fact.

Please seek alternatives like chiropractic, herbs, exercise, and proper diet for your maladies rather than prescription drugs. No one will benefit but you and the Americal Medical Association, the insurance companies, and the drug companies know that and that is why they are such pushers!

I could write a book here but there are plenty that will prove my point. Topicals are not great but they are not nearly as bad as pills. Please, try hard not to take them.

Well, I am totally off the minocycline 100 mg/day but it has taken me this full week to recover. The migraine headaches were horrible and lasted for nearly three weeks. Because I have a very strict workplace I could not miss work and had to be here through it all. With the aid of a friendly co-worker I made it but it was enough to bring tears.

So, I have sought herbal alternatives and found this regimen, which is working well with no side effects:

-3 tsp. Noni juice daily

-1000 mg MSM daily

-Colloidal silver as toner and internally every other day, 2 tsp.

-Duac on a moist face in a.m.

-Alternate Differin and Neutrogena salicylic acid in p.m.

If your minocycline, or any other tetracycline drug is giving you severe or constant headaches, call your doctor immediately. Do not suffer through it like I did.

I tried minocycline and i have to agree it was terrible.

Mind you I only used it for 6 days till i got completely fed up.

facial acne got a lot worse (i was doin just fine w/ the regimen) which i had to quit cause of overdrying. Back acne just stayed the same..

Hi Rich-E, I still have lingering headaches and I have stopped the meds for 13 days now! So, it was very severe. However, I believe the weather and barometric pressure honestly has a little to do with my headaches, too. It has been ultra rainy here in the S.E. U.S.

So, mino may help clear up faces. But, headaches or not, it is not worth it due to the fact that long-term antibiotic use wears down one's defenses rather than building them up.

It is summertime and hey, I am gonna break out so acceptance is a big part of dealing with this. I am using my Duac twice a day now with a light gel oil free moisturizer at night and The Body Shop Seaweed Shine Control SPF 15 for day. I still cleanse with Neutrogena or tea tree soap. The key to cleansing is RINSE, RINSE, RINSE. I also did a steam facial last night with lavender, grapefruit, and cypress oils and a mud mask after that. Then, a cool splash of water and my Duac. I awoke with a clearer face this morning.

Well, it has been weird. No more bad headaches but skin is quite sensitive and still very oily. All blackheads are gone but pores are still quite congested. About 3 lingering pimples, tons of tiny bumps on forehead, enlarged pores, and 3-4 spots that are flat but quite red and need to be covered with concealer.

Still washing with Neutrogena Foaming Face Wash (you need to rinse heavily with this or it will leave a residue), using occasional witch hazel toner, using Duac in a.m. and BP or salicylic in p.m. Also, still using colloidal silver internally and as occasional toner, taking 200 mg. zinc per day, and taking 500 mg MSM (sulphur) per day.

For the first month on minocycline my face was worse than it was without the pills. After about 5 weeks it just started to get much better in combination with tazorac and triamcinolone acetonide. I was actually very depressed when I was takin mino and my skin got unbelievably bad. but there was a 100% turn around and im doing good now. I really dont have any active acne left and just alot of hyperpigmentation, its amazing what it does for your attitude and self confidence.
