the truth about Hibiclens/Hibitane

Recommended Posts

hi everyone wow i'mnew here been browsing this site for

about a week now and wanted to give a little feedback....

first a little background about me, i'm 27 M and I have lived in

toronto canada for most of my life and had a pretty

good childhood...going on 13, in the summer i started breaking out

on my forehead i used to have longer hair in the front covering

my forehead. Although this was relatively mild going into highschool

i stared to have occasional breakouts with rather larger pimples

all over my face and much like most of you wanted to hide!

I did not have the confodence to talk or even make new friends.

That summer I also got my first job at McDonalds and the

embarassment of my breakouts made me not want to look

customers and managers in the eye I still remember a manager thought i

was being rude or shy and told me to look people in the eyes...

the extent of my knowledge of prevention of pimples came from my

friends who mostly had flawlwss skin who told me to basically wash my face

lots and put on clearsil. Without knowledge of the science behind acne

and thinking its just a result of dirty skin i would wash my face with any

soap i could find and slap on some clearsil...anyways moving forward

as i got older i would again have spells of bad skin followed by flawless skin....

then when i was 24 I got the worst breakout of my life and with the aid of the net

I did lots of research I started with a small breakout then it progressed into almost a

thick red skin shell growing on my cheeks very painful and everyday i tried

all kinds of otc and everyday i wished i would get some relief....the

worst feeling for me was when i would see family or friends and they

would constantly remind me that my acne looks like its getting

worse...as if i could just wipe it off my face and say HEY THANKS

all gone kind of like being reminded of your fly being unzipped...

I remember just befor my breakout I really wanted to ask out an

attractive girl but immediately after i brokeout i would try to just go to work

as hard as that was and go home and every minute obsess over my acne.

Look around and could not see one face with even mild acne at

the mall or anything and I remember a time i was in a rather long

line at a checkout and someone in line said "excuse me...you have

some really bad acne I once used XXXXXX for it and it worked"

although I know she was trying to help i was so mortified I felt

like everyone was watching me after that i dont even

remember what product she said i wanted so bad

to just crawl onto a hole and not be there. I realized that

day how much psylogically acne was effecting me. Physically

I'm 5 11 and before acne considered myself good looking and had

so much confidence...but after I just feel so low just want to bow my

head down everywhere I went!! I then went to a derm that prescribed

me some creams that took me nowhere and herein canada the derm is

like a 11 month wait...I basically gave up but then my sister who is younger

than me told me to try something that worked for mer ... Hibitane. It came

in a plain white bottle about $7 canadian for the small bottle and $14 for the

large it was like the plainest bottle you would find and was clearly marked

"made for acne" and was found in the acne otc section what is here in

canada called Shoppers Drug mart, the biggest chain of Drug Stores

comparible to CVS. I still remember the first time I used it that same

day the pain associated with my acne started to go away and I

could actually smile without it hurting....

You know the feeling you get on your face when you know acne

is healing instead of just starting or in the middle well my whole face

felt like it was healing!!!FROM THE FIRST DAY!!!!In about a week after

that all my active pimples were gone and i just had to wait for everything

to heal! The only facial issues I had was scarring (MILD) that was noticable from

close which i believe was a result of the assult i did on my face somedays from

scrubbing really hard in anger:( For the next 3 years I used hibitane and nothing

else with 0 acne. This was my miracle product. Then about 6 months ago I went

to get a fresh supply and to my dismay the product was discontinued !!!! I could

not believe it!!! I then hoped the continued use of Hibitane maybe

somehow eliminated my acne completely or maybe I had outgrown my acne?

For the next 1-1/2 months i had no breakouts..my regimine simply included

washing with a clean and clear product..but then I noticed a cluster of pimples

on my cheeks oh no i thought but since it was just a few i thought i will just

keep washing and it will go away...to my dismay it got worse and

worse and I had no hibitane I wished so much i had it and did lots of research

trying to find it at that time and could only find that in canada thew company

that distributed it which was based in ontario had discontinued it without any real

reason.my face took a turn for the worst and was showing signs of how it was 3

years ago, I was so desperate......I then came across acne.org and seen some

ppl talking about "hibiclens" that has the same active ingredient ad hibitane

except 5% of CHLORHEXIDINE

instead of 4% in hibiclens I was so happy that i made a trip to the US to pick

this up and brought it over to canada!!!At this time the same symptoms as I had

before had come back and I applied the hibiclens for the first time.

It had the same smell and colour of hibitane but it seemed to lather up a lot less

hibitane lathered up slightly more I didnt care I applied and waited for the same

magic to happen....3 days later no good results same or worse skin!!!! I could not

believe it was not working !!

Note that although hibitane and hibiclens had the same active ingredient in

CHLORHEXIDINE hibitane I believe was specially formulated for acne and

hibiclens is formulated for a handwash...

looking at the ingredients I think hibiclens has more alcohol

I then did some research and came upon acne.org where there

was discussion on hibiclens and that some of you mentioned that hibiclens does

nothing for shedding old skin cells and a suggestion I just came upon was using

St. Ives scrub to exfoliate...desperate I went and got it and got the SA formula

apricot scrub for acne right next to the traditional apricot acrub this was about 3

days ago. I also picked up Nutrogenia glycerine like soap for acne to wash my

face before the scrub....i left it on about 4 mins the first time instead of the

suggested 1 min and then washed it off with warm water then after all residue of the scrub was off I put on the hibiclens for 1 min and rinsed with cool water. I suddenly had the feeling again of healing I experienced of hibitane and after 3

days I can see a lot of improvement i still have red marks and what look like pimples but they are healed and waiting to fall off ... i'm not going to rush this

as i do not want any more scaring :/ Although I think hibiclens works slower than

hibitane,I dont mind the wait!!! I hope they put hibitane acne formula

back on the market again someday...

Anyways I will update this to let yall know how its going but just wanted to say

thanks to all the great ppl on here with all kinds of great info you have provided

me ... I also hope this helps ppl who are considering trying CHLORHEXIDINE. I

wish everyone all the best!

one thing i forgot to mention was that the combination of scrub and hibiclens

seems to dry out my skin a lot so i use a mousturizer (neutrogina oil free pump)

and this prevents overdrying

WOW!!

Read thru your post....

I too was looking for Hibitane all over the place hospitals and weird stores and they have discontinued it or sold out!!

I think Hibitane is better than Hibiclens because right on the box of Hibitane it says it helps Acne and also can be used as a face wash as for Hibiclens it's more of a hand wash!!

Been looking for Hibitane everywhere in Toronto with no luck... I guess i'm gonna get a Prescription that has the same or near exact ingreidients with the CG of at least 4%

Anywayz good post

Thank-you

My husband works in surgery and he and his collegues will not use hibiclens or habi??? because they feel it is a carcinogen. It has been around since the seventies, but recently many people have stopped using it because they are worried it can build up in their system and cause cancer. If it gets through your skin, it can do damage to your liver. He says that this happens over a long period of time, and this is what he knows. Please, do not get mad about this post. I just wanted you all to know the possible dangers. He made me get rid of my soap because he was so concerned. He has nothing he can back up his thoughts on this, but he has worked in surgery for 10 years. Just a bit of information. Be careful and safe!!

yeah i agree.. you guys shouldn't use hibiclens until they do a thorough research on this product.. and SAY that it is good to use as a face wash for acne..

and if this was used since the 70s.. you know they would've at least advertised it somehow as a treatment for acne..

Well, no, not exactly. You are only allowed to advertise something in the US as an acne treatment if it has SA, BP or sulfur in it. You can say things like "reduces the appearance of blemishes" but you can't use the A word.

The cancer danger is a concern, though I think the amount of usage is important to keep in mind. Surgeons may use it many, many times a day for many years. We would use it 1-2 times a day and most of use for only a few years. So, I think the risk needs to be weighed. There is some evidence that BP is a possible carcinogen, and SA and AHA increase your subsceptibility to skin cancer, so most of our are taking the risk regardless.

Your story made me do a search for hibitane that led to a dead end too. It's encouraging to learn it was used in a acne treatment. I'm using hibiclens now too and find it a pretty good cleanser. It's not been long enough for me to make a final decision on how I'd rate it yet though. I can understand people being hesitant to try it. I was and still and very cautious using it. Here is some article I looked at that helped me decide whether to use it or not.

The material safety data sheet on hibiclens

http://www.regentmedical.com/americas/hibi...ata_sheets.html

It says chronic effects are unlikely.

I think the main thing is keeping it out of your eyes.

This is a study outlining the effects.

another...

It's up to who ever is using it to do the research and decide for themselves if it's something they want to try for themselves.

[Chlorhexidine topical antiseptic

What is chlorhexidine topical antiseptic?

CHLORHEXIDINE topical antiseptic (Hibiclens®, Hibistat®, and others) is used to clean the skin prior to surgery. Chlorhexidine destroys bacteria, which helps prevent infections during and after surgery. Chlorhexidine cleanser (Hibiclens®) may also be used to treat acne

What should my health care professional know before I use chlorhexidine topical antiseptic?

They need to know if you have any of the following conditions:

an unusual or allergic reaction to chlorhexidine, especially oral rinses

breast feeding

any skin rashes or problems

How should I use this medication?

Before surgery, you may need to wash your whole body including your hair in the shower twice. Follow exactly the washing instructions given to you by your health care professional if they are different from these instructions. Wet your body including your hair. Wash your hair using 25 ml (almost 2 tablespoonfuls) of the topical antiseptic. Then wash your body using another 25 ml of the topical antiseptic. Rinse your body. Repeat the process and rinse well after the second washing

To use chlorhexidine cleanser for acne, wet your face then wash your face with about 1 teaspoonful of the cleanser. Rinse and dry your face well. You should use the cleanser twice daily, in the morning and evening, or as directed by your prescriber or health care professional

What if I miss a dose?

You will only have to use this product prior to surgery or other procedures. It is very important to follow the instructions and wash prior to the event

What drug(s) may interact with chlorhexidine topical antiseptics?

Chlorhexidine topical antiseptic is to be used as a wash before surgery or other procedures. It should not be taken by mouth and should not interfere with other medicines you are taking. Avoid contact with your ears and eyes

Tell your prescriber or other health care professional about all other medicines, nutritional supplements, herbal and non-prescription medicines you are taking. Check before stopping or starting any of your medicines

What should I watch for while taking chlorhexidine topical antiseptic?

Chlorhexidine topical antiseptic may cause allergic reactions, which can be severe. Notify a health care professional immediately if you have an allergic reaction

Chlorhexidine may cause irritation to skin and may cause you to be more sensitive to the sun

What side effects may I notice from using chlorhexidine topical antiseptic?

Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or other health care professional as soon as possible:

shortness of breath

rash

hives

itching

swelling of tongue or throat

cough

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or other health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

Rare or uncommon:

increased sensitivity to the sun

More common:

skin irritation

It's not advised for use as a pre-operative scrub on the face which isn't the same as using it as a cleanser. The risk of eye irritation and loss of vision if you get it in your eye and don't rinse it out is real. They've done a lot of research on this product and there's a lot of info out there. Here's a link that answers some of the concerns about using chlorhexidine

http://www.apsf.org/resource_center/newsle...mer/letters.htm

If I were very concerned I'd dilute it to less than 2% or not use it at all.

The contact with the middle ear not a real concern when you're just using it for a face cleanser. Also keep it away from mucous membranes...so keep mouth closed when washing face.

If does seem to help acne though. Here's a study on that

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.f...7&dopt=Abstract

Interestingly, there's a lot of products out there that contain chlorhexidine digluconate, from clearisil to Neostrata. I'm not sure the difference but chlorhexidine is probably there in a small %

I know. I believe it was also compared to PCMX (chloroxylenol) and Betadine (povidone-iodine) and it turned out that Chloroxylenol was most effective for acne.

However, I think PCMX is safer according to Eco-Tru. Environmental Protection Agency allows EcoTru to be sold without a toxic warning label.

I am so glad that you all are doing your homework. My husband wanted me to point out that he will have up to 5 surgeries a day. This means that he is washing his hands way more than you all will be washing your faces. I just wanted to let you know what he told me. Also, he said that the skin on your face is much different than the skin on your hands. Oh, and as you have already mentioned be careful around your eyes. It could be problematic if it got into your tear ducts too. Be safe!!!!

I think it may be this one

http://diamondathletic.com/product.php?txt...068d82e39c4c3a#

They no longer can get it from the US across the border.

Perhaps it's still available in the US somewhere.

Chloroxylenol sounds good.

Baby Blue, it's great that everyone shares what they know or have heard about hibiclens so we can make a better decision whether we want to use it or not. So far it seems to be helping and as soon as I'm clear I'll dilute it and just keep it on my face a little longer and see how that goes.

Okay, can I just share what I do/use? I haven't been on acne.org for awhile because I was using proactive and it worked for me. Complete and total clear skin for about a year and then I switched to acnefree, just because of price, and it worked for awhile and then stopped. So, I went back to proactive and it didn't work anymore either. sad.gif Don't know what happened for sure. But, I did some searching and remembered a bunch of old things we used to talk about here on acne.org. I remember there was a huge thread on the scar board about neosporin, for scars not acne, I had sent the then moderator, maya, some because you can't get it in England, or couldn't then. I remember Maya started the apple cider vinegar, lemon and water, etc. Anyway, back then, I tried them all. But, then I remembered back when I was in charge of ordering surgical supplies at a hosiptal I worked for, I had got the brilliant idea to use hibiclens because the surgeons use it. I remember using it, but didn't remember the results. I was so bad back then, that if something broke me out once I would stop using it. I sometimes only gave products one or two chances before giving up. Never stuck with anything. So, I decided to try hibiclens again. Then I familiarized myself with acne.org again and I saw this post and a few others. So, I wanted to share what I do and this is really working for me. No initial breakout, no acne, old ones are clearing very well, etc. So, after this message is already a book, I will tell you what has worked for me. biggrin.gif Mind you, this has been tweaked after getting back into acne.org.

My regime:

Morning:

Wash with hibiclens, tone with witch hazel then apply Aubrey Organics amino derm gel

(I actually saw someone on here talking about this amino derm gel and it is a new componet of my regime, but so far so good) eusa_pray.gif

Evening:

Wash with hibiclens

Tone with Witch Hazel

Apply anti-fungal cream with electric toothbrush (Believe it or not, I have been using the creme for awhile, it was something discussed a long time ago on this board, the toothbrush exfoliation, however, is a new idea that I got from Jessica. I must say I love it, cleans out the pores so good and my face looks great.)

Okay, so I think the only question anyone would have is how I apply the cream. I do this in sections. I put cream all over my right side of my face, I rub it all over, but do not rub in, I then take my electric toothbrush and let the toothbrush completely rub it in. I only do this at night because it takes about 10 minutes. I then do the rest of my face in sections. I leave it on overnight.

I'm telling you this is what is working for me. You are definitely on to something with the hibiclens. Just wanted to let you know that someone has been doing this for awhile and it is working for me. Who knows which componet is working best, maybe a combo of all of them, but it works. And my skin looks good. I have very very very oily skin, blackheads, etc and the toothbrush gets those balckheads out. I have no active acne right now, but I had a monster on my right cheek and quite a few little pimples on my face when I started and even the monster was healed within 3 days of starting this. Also, I want to mention, I am 30 years old and have had acne since I was 12. I am one of those people that would wake up with at least 2 or 3 zits every single day. So, sorry for the extra long post, just wanted to let you guys and gals know it has worked for me.
