I first heard Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart in Donnie Darko and I knew it had real heart-- for four blokes playing on Casios-- when I heard it again in 24 Hour Party People (with the brilliant Steve Coogan). I really love this song.

A really good song is Angeles by Elliot Smith. If you have not heard it before I highly recommend you listen to it, it's a beautiful melodic and soft mainly one instrument song (guitar) with mellow vocals and some synth in the background.

This is all pretty decent stuff so far, but there is a serious lack of hardcore at the moment. What about music when you're angry and you need to thrash? This might be too hard for some people, but if you can handle it, it'll rock your socks off.

I'll just list bands first, and then maybe a song if they have a certain really good one.

I'm a huge Duran Duran junkie and all their music new (their new CD Astronaut is really fab!!!) and old totally inspires me and is great therapy when I need a pick me up. I also love Seal, New Order, Robert Palmer, The Power Station. John Taylor of DD has a lot of solo work that is really raw and powerful stuff that I totally lose myself in when I need to feel inspired! His motto and now mine is Trust the Process and Crisis = Opportunity!

6. Joe Satriani - Strange Beautiful Music

7. Matthew Good Band - Underdogs

8. Pink Floyd - The Wall/Wish you were here

9. Silverchair - Diorama

10. Kyuss - Best of Kyuss

I would strongly recommend either of these albums/musicians...all are VERY good at what they do and have given me much insight on new ideas to try in my musical endeavors. Most artists today just copy old ideas that have been done before - the above music will mostly likely reach you one way or another if you like a change from all that mainstream shit and are open to something fresh and unpredictable.
