Hey there,

How many of you stopped using Accutane because you had some tinnitus?

Did they go away afterwards, or subside?? I'm really curious to know...because lately I've been hearing this occasional ring, but I've had it occur before accutane usage..and it occurs for 2 seconds to 5 secs max....

Any of you folk have this?

Im curious to see if stopping Accutane made it go away....

Thanks guys for your help!

I stopped taking accutane in '03 because of tinnitus...developed a pretty severe case (very loud and constant ringing).

Ringing never stopped, although I did go back on accutane recently (read: you can adapt to tinnitus, even if it does not stop).

i just stopped accutane 1.5 weeks ago after developing what i would clas as severe tinnitus.

I have no idea if its to do with accutane or not. could be complete coincidence, since it is so rare.

the ringing is still as loud as ever and its one of the most awefull non-life threatening inflictions that could happen to someone.

If you suspect any tinnitus at all, get off the drug and see what happens.

I developed tinnitus that has never gone away due to accutane, and I was on a low dose. I had to stop taking it unfortunately. I believe the insert says it can cause tinnitus that may or may not go away. Sux, I know.

Hi Kitty,

what was your dosage and your weight, and how long did you go on Accutane for, and how long has it been since you quit?

So basically, everyone's tinnitus has been permanent after Accutane??

I think i hear a buzzing, but Im not sure...its only there when i really really concentrate, and its the same sound that I've heard since I was a little boy...but for some reason my mind keeps focusing on it....ya think it could be psychogenic??

This sux...i thought tinnitus should stop after Accutane's outta your system....

Anyone else??

Thanx

Hey,

I weigh like 110-115. I started out at only 20mg twice a day I think for like a month, and then went up to 40. This was a year and a half ago. I believe it was twice a day..my god, it's been a while!

So, I was only on it for a month and a half, and then bam...tinnitus. I was drinking plenty of water too! I was pretty upset, because my skin was reacting to it right away. My oil went away pretty quickly, but accutane just wasn't meant for me. I also had a pretty bad reaction when I came off of it, it was almost like going through drug withdrawl or something. Basically, some ppl can tolerate it , and others can't. I even have some stomach issues that I believe was caused by that stuff!

As far as the tinnitus going away after treatment...well it can, but then sometimes it doesn't. My doctor was surprised I still had it. If you've had buzzing since u can remember, then maybe you are being a bit paranoid. I mean I don't have to concentrate to hear it. I don't notice it during the day, but at night , and when it's quite I do. At first it was really freaking me out, but you do get used to it. If you notice it is worse, I think you should stop or u risk having it forever. There is no cure at this point really. Good luck to you either way.

I was researching zinc and acne link (acne sufferers are supposed to need extra zinc) and came across a couple of studies of zinc/tinnitus:

ZINC

Turkey, 2003

In this placebo-controlled study, 28 tinnitus patients received zinc (50 mg of zinc daily), and 13 tinnitus patients received a placebo. Researchers Arda et al., measured blood zinc levels at the beginning of the study (31% had lower-than-normal zinc levels), and tested tinnitus loudness. For 82% of patients who took zinc, tinnitus severity decreased. The placebo group did not report significant tinnitus severity reduction.

Japan, 2003

When zinc blood levels in 73 tinnitus patients and 38 healthy volunteers were tested, there was no significant difference between healthy volunteers and people with tinnitus and hearing loss. However, patients with tinnitus and no hearing loss had significantly lower zinc levels than did the non-tinnitus volunteers. Researchers Ochi et al., suggest that zinc might be involved in the generation of tinnitus in patients whose hearing is relatively normal.

Might be worth a try if you haven't already tried it.

C.

This is quite a downer...

so if you have tinnitus, its game over.......by the time you realize you get it its tough luck??

I'm not sure if I have rinning from tinnitus or being paranoid.....reading the net makes u think weird...

PJ - what do you mean yours never stopped? Did it die down at least?

What does it sound like to you? a hum, a buzz,?

What was your dosage, weight, and length of accutane before acutally expericing the symptoms??

Thanks!

Kitty Kitty - sorry for all the questions...

but i have a few more!

1) So you were on a total of 40 mg/day for month, then went to 80 mg/day (i.e. 40 mg x 2)?

2)What does your tinnitus sound like? Like a buzz, a hum, a high pitch?

Did you guys go to an audiologist to get it tested?

Also phil_b, what was your dosage, weight, and lenght of treatment?

I think I'm getting really really paranoid here....

My weight is 155 lbs, and I've been on accutane for 1 month....(I was on it previously before for 6 months, no side effects, took a 3 month break). My dosage was 40 mg/once a day, which corresponds to 0.57 mg/kg...

I think thats a pretty low dosage...but just want some more info for comparison...any info would be great!

Thanks again!!

I was only on accutane for 3 weeks, at about 30mg day. then tinnitus set in. I wight about 170 pounds.

it could be unrelated, but seems odd, what else could have caused this?

reading the tinnitus literature it would seem chances are great it will be with you forever more. 10% of it abating in 6 months.

Mine came on all of a sudden and upped in volume over the next couple of weeks.

If you have to really strain to hear it, i wouldnt worry, at least you dont have to listen to it all day.

m.d....

My tinnitus sounds like a high pitched hum, but tinnitus can also sound like a buzz or roar. If it's worrying you so much, don't take the tane. Calm down tho, I mean it's not like tinnitus will kill you or anything. Once you have it, it is annoying, but you really do start to notice it less as time goes on. Also, having soft background noise on while you try to fall asleep is helpful. I did have it for a night and then it went away actually, but....it came back like a couple of nights later and never went away. I guess you need to choose what is more important....your skin, or maybe ending up with tinnitus. I will say tho, I don't know if it would have gotten worse if I continued to stay on it. I think if you have to concentrate so hard to hear it, that could just be normal. I have only had a normal checkup since having tinnitus. My hearing is actually normal. I should go and get a better test prolly. One day.

Don't worry about all the questions by the way!

Happy to help.

yea, i came off my bike 2 years ago and fractured my skull. blood was pouring out of the effected tinnitus ear. But no ringing was present after, and there is no physical damage to my ear after a specialist examined it recently.

It may be ive been predisposed to this for some time. I was on accutane 4 years ago with tremendous results so.... who knows.

I think a combo of chronic stress/anxiety, the skull thing and the accutane may have all conspired against me here.

I would say tinnitus is VVVV rare on tane and wouldnt let it put you off. im just really unlucky

There is a homeopathic medicne called Thiosinaminum that works for tinnitus. Find a local homeaopathic doctor and ask him about it...

what makes it worse is that the tane was working SO DAMN WELL this time too.

after 3 weeks, no oil and about 2 active dieing zits. red marks fade about 200% quicker too. another month at that rate and my skin would have seriously been perfect....

went from a the worst acne face of my life to the best skin id had in a year in just over 3 weeks.. no joke... baaaahhhh humbug. zits are coming back

Im slowly getting used to the tinnitus

Phil, I really hate that for you. I can't imagine having to learn to deal with something that frustrating. Have you talked to your derm about it? And this may sound ridiculous, but if the tinnitus is already that bad, how much worse do you think it could get if you went back on accutane? Is that a totally innane question? I'm just thinking, though, if it wasn't caused by accutane (and there's no way to tell that it was-- to me, that bike accident sounds like it could just as easily be the cause) then you could at least have the clear skin. It sounds like you're really super disappointed that your skin is breaking out again... I don't know. I don't mean to sound like I'm making light of the tinnitus.

thats ok

i dont think anyone can understand or relate to tinnitus unless they have it themselves. Since there are no outwardly physical signs or anything people just shrug it off.

Im sure there are people with severe acne that would trade places with me, swapping that for clear skin but tinnitus (tho my skin aint as clear now), as to them, their acne is the worst thing imaginable, and they would probably say, well at least you dont have to wear your problem on your face. But after a week of T im sure they would be wanting their acne back, like me.

things are getting better tho. the days seem a bit 'quieter', prob cos im getting used to it. I'll give it another 6 weeks or so and see where i am, the tane should be truly out of my system then. we shall see. by that time i will be whole lot better regardless of the state of my tinnitus.

I think mine was just in my head...i stopped Accutane 2 weeks ago and i hear nothing....i mean i hear exactly what i did when i thought i had tinnitus...albeit i have to really really concentrate while im in a quiet room or sleeping...but the more i think about it the louder it gets....i think everyone hear's something when its super quiet..its jsut that they tuned it out...

lemme know how it goes phil
