National Geographic -Eunuchs in India

Recommended Posts

I flipped on the TV today and it was a National Geographic show called gender benders. It was about eunuchs in India. What caught my eye was the high number of eunuchs with acne and acne scarring - face and back. This is rare to see a select group with more of its members having acne.

What is the connection with losing ones family jewels and acne? I was surprised as I figured it would be the other way around. You know, less testosterone and all. Here's some info on this tradition and I would welcome any puzzlers who want to puzzle on this one.

*********************************************************************

India is the only country where the tradition of eunuchs is prevalent today. There are about 1 million of them, though their role in life has changed drastically from that of royal servants, confidantes and friends.

Eunuchs, or hijras as they are called here, have become something to be feared. Nobody wants to be accosted by one of them - be nudged with their elbows, stroked on the cheek, taunted, cursed and flashed.

It's by taking advantage of this discomfort and embarrassment at their existence, that hijras in 21st Century India are making their living. Begging isn't their only source of income. It's an age-old custom in the country to have hijras bless childbirths, weddings, housewarmings and other auspicious occasions. The eunuchs are believed to possess occult powers, and their blessings - and curses - are both considered potent.....

Actually, I don't find it surprising that eunuchs have a higher incidence of acne problems. I'm not too familiar with the biology behind it, but I can say that just because they were castrated does not mean they have less testosterone. That hormone is produced in other places. Therefore, when testosterone is not concentrated there, more is around to help promote acne. This seems similar to those who get their testicles remove for some reason such as testicular cancer: some of the time, the men grow breasts, because the testosterone is simply concentrated in another area.
