I've had some requests from Boston50 and igotmyphilosophy and polar419 to share some celebrity beauty/skincare tips especially vis-a-vis acne that I've eavesdropped growing up in a certain environment.

First off, it should be noted that most people whose careers and livelihoods rest primarily if not entirely on their appearance have both greater resources to invest in their appearance and greater incentives to do so. That being said, everyone wants to look their best and if the expense isn't too daunting, anyone can avail of the the tricks and tips that the professionally attractive use to stay in business. I've endeavored to include more of the simpler and more affordable ones.

Women have a far greater latitude and richer history of beauty and especially skin secrets than men, but the rise of the metrosexual and increasing acceptability of the fact that the vast male ego should only naturally extend to his appearance has yielded a lucrative industry of men's grooming with its own share of cheap, short-cut techniques.

* * *

For the Women:

Models the world over tend to do most if not all of the following things: start each day 1 hour before breakfast immediately upon rising with a mug of hot water with the juice of a fresh-squeezed lemon; this kickstarts your digestive system for the day and is generally very cleansing. Furthermore drinking 3-4 liters per day with fresh-squeezed lemons diluted within yields remarkable clarity, vitality and glow to skin. MSM (type of sulfur) is increasingly adopted by 30- to 40-something women in the know, especially in combination with vitamin C, to increase collagen production and thereby regain that 20-something suppleness and smoothness. Kate Moss does this regularly and thus despite a collagen-depleting chainsmoking habit that would make the Marlboro Man reach for the patch she retains youthful skin. Gillian McKeith former nutritional adviser to Kylie Minogue and Nicole Kidman highly stresses avoiding eating anything within 3 hours before bedtime, as this frees your body and especially liver to do its proper job of cleansing and detoxifying itself of all the days exposure to smog, smoke, alcohol, poorly metabolized foods, impurities, etc. If you have food in you to be digested while you are sleeping your body's natural cleansing cycle is greatly disturbed-- this is why when you eat a great big dinner and go to sleep right away, you always wake up feeling groggy and sleep-deprived, even if you've slept 10 hours.

Alpha lipoic acid, nicotinamide, and carnosine when added to MSM result in fantastic skin tone and texture within days. Many teen models in the UK are routinely given at shows free packages of Perfectil-- Skin, Hair and Nails, a very specialized daily multivitamin specifically for optimal quality and growth of skin, hair and nails but also including RDAs of all major vitamins. EFAs such as flaxseed, borage, and evening primrose oil significantly accelerate hair growth and nail growth as well as improving metabolism to assist slimming; they should be taken with antioxidants such as alpha lipoic and/or vitamin c as they trigger release of free radicals/toxins for elimination from the body.

Vegetable juices are nutrient-dense and alkalizing for the blood having not only marked benefits for acne but are also championed by countless professional athletes, from Tiger Woods to Shaquille O'Neal.

Daily steaming is extremely beneficial and the reason that most celebrities have steam rooms installed in their homes. A convenient alternative to visit a steam room at your local gym is to fill your sink or a pot with boiling water from your kettle or microwave, place your head under a towel over the water and steam your face for 10 minutes, ideally twice and at least once every day. This followed by a gentle circular massaging of a mild cleanser in the shower will eliminate blackheads after several days with cumulatively improved skin clarity and tone after weeks, as well as giving skin a healthy, baby-soft, rosy pink glow.

Regular face masks of flaxseed oil, available in liquid form from any healthfood store, are not only beneficial as with all EFAs taken internally but is also an outstanding youth-invigorating topical. Oatmeal as exfoliant, honey as soother, egg mask as astringent and all the others discussed to death around acne.org. The one product that every actress uses literally up to an hour before hitting the red carpet on Oscar night is Neuropeptide Facial Conformer, the so-called "face-lift in a jar," by world-renowned dermatologist Dr. Nicholas Perricone, who also wrote The Acne Prescription (full of valuable dietary insights into acne and details an effective low-sugar anti-inflammatory diet that has proved generally beneficial for acne and extremely effective for acne rosacea).

A common model and actress trick for hair used to be to drill holes in a coconut and pour the milk into wet hair, wrap it in a towel and leave it overnight. A more convenient method is to get 100% Virgin Coconut Oil from your health store (coconut oil is also extremely healthy taken orally; it is a polyunsaturated fat and rare among fats as it accelerates metabolism and actually helps you to LOSE weight); this oil is uniquely solid at room temperature; you massage this into your hair, wrap in towel, leave overnight and wash out in the morning. Alternatively, take any good conditioner, ideally Herbal Essence, massage in hair, do the towel-turban overnight and rinse out in morning, leaving hair lustrous, vibrant, soft and looking like you stepped off the cover of Cosmo.

Madonna, Liv Tyler, Princess Diana and Usher (yeah, Usher, as in "Yeah!"), all have one thing in common. Any idea? They all regularly had/have colonic irrigations. This is basically a professionally administered enema. If you do not wish to spend the money (100-200$US) on a colonic, even though 1 per month is sufficient, you can purchase an enema kit in any good pharmacy and perform enemas yourself 1-2 times a months for comparable results. A colonic/enema is a flushing of the bowels with purified water and sometimes other solutions such coffee, epsom salts and even probiotic yogurt. It has the the result of purging the colon of months' and sometimes years' worth of hardned impacted fecal matter, and thus is a very quick detox that other people sometimes can only achieve by consuming noting but water for days. Especially the colonic but also the enema results in generally elevated energy levels, clearer glowing skin, clear bright eyes and all around wellbeing.

Jessica Simpson, female terminator and supermodel Kristanna Loken and Justin Timberlake have all taken Accutane, and Simpson only started ProActiv to maintain her post-Accutane complexion. If you have a problem stopping you from achieving you personal or professional ambitions, go to a specialist and deal with it.

The liver is the body's largest internal organ, the body's primary detoxifying organ and the single most important organ in your body for all around health. Liver congestion reveals itself most immediately through the tongue, with a whitish coating that if especially visible and persistent may further indicate an intestinal candida infection easily solved with daily probiotic acidophilus and odorless garlic tablets (especially beneficial after any prolonged course of antibiotics which has likely resulted in candida overgrowth). The liver congestion suggested by this may be solved by a 3 day detox undergone at the world's most expensive celebrity spa retreats, consisting of nothing but organic golden delicious apples consumer for 3 consecutive days with nightly enemas and a liver cleansing concoction of 1 cup olive oil and 1 tblspoon lemon juice swallowed before bed on the last night, easing into a primarily vegetable, fruit and nut diet for the subsequent week before returning to more regular foods.

Virtually all actresses and models regularly practise yoga not merely for the trendiness of it but for its undeniably salubrious effect in toning body and mind. Adult-onset acne particularly in women is linked to the adrenal glands, attached to the kidneys, which overexert themselves in a constant state of fight-or-flight whether or nor there is necessarily a stress trigger, producing excess cortisol and thereby elevating androgen levels resulting in breakouts. This can often be greatly alleviated with daily yoga and meditation, either in the privacy of an incense-filled quiet dark room or in a class with friends, with further benefits to be gained from once to twice monthly acupuncture sessions with a practictioner specifically skilled with skin disorders and particularly acne.

There are countless others and if you post questions within the thread I'd be happy to provide more detailed information if I'm able to.

For Men:

Male skin is thicker, oilier, and has larger pores than female skin. Besides being 24% thicker, our oilier, larger pores result from the greater enlargement of our sebaceous glands from stimulation by our higher androgen (male sex hormone) levels, especially testosterone, during puberty. We are thus more prone to acne and especially more severe acne during adolescence than females, but far less prone to acne after adolescence than females, who are far more likely to experience adult-onset acne after even a perfectly clear adolescence. We can make the best of our skin with once-weekly kaolin or bentonite masks in addition to gentle daily cleansing, face steaming and non-comedogenic moisturizing.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, record 5-time Mr. Universe and personal nutritionist to countless celebrities in his early days, emphasizes "magic" 8 hours sleep (9 for teenagers) between hours of 11PM and 7AM or better yet 10PM to 6AM, consistently and at regular times, as human Growth Hormone (the "fountain of youth" and essential for growth, muscular and general cellular renewal and development) is secreted by the pineal gland in the brain only during sleep, peaking about 90 minutes after falling asleep and again briefly shortly before waking.

The body is also sensitive to light/dark patterns and this has an effect on skin, as there is a clinically demonstrated correlation between working night-shifts and acne, as well as with insomnia and acne. For night-time resltlessness, take Valerian root homeopathic pills and a glass of warm milk, or simply have sex during your lunch break instead ;-). Sebum production peaks at 1PM, so this is an ideal time (on a weekend, once weekly) for a face mask if and when you want to apply one. Don't be insecure about it, you're still a man: this is after all the 21st century-- men can do face masks (behind closed doors at least). ;-)

Men appear to benefit especially from amino acid supplements for sustained high energy, lecithin granules for metabolism and saw palmetto for the prostate and general sexual health, as recommended by celebrity nutritionist Gillian McKeith.

A secret to improved breath is buying a "scraping brush" at any pharmacy and running along the tongue front to before/after brushing your teeth, which should be TWICE daily plus flossing at least once daily. Whitnening tootphastes are mildly but not particularly effective; teeth bleaching system products are all hype and do not contain the sufficient concentrations of active bleaching ingredients to achieve remotely the results promised; only dentists can legally administer the necessary concentrations to achieve true whitening effects and the kind you see in the smiles of most actors. The only way to achieve this whitening effect is at the dentist, but in the meantime your teet will benefit from twice dail brushing in addition to minimizing coffee, smoking and red wine, which are worst offenders for stained teeth (Johnny Depp almost never gives an open-mouthed smile, and while this gives him an intense, mysterious suavity, it is actually his self-consciousness in concealing what are by all personal accounts extremely stained teeth from his unapologetic smoking habit).

You don't need a high-priced personalized style consultant or image guru to customize a hip and trendy look for you. Get a girl with great taste to go through your closet with you and pick out the clothes that look good on you and match your personality and physical shape and appearance. Then look for clothes in these styles, colours, fabrics and designers when you go shopping for clothes, to build up a wardrobe that "works". Believe it or not virtually all women look at your shoes and really judge you for it, and they especially like to look at the back of a man's shoes as he leaves a room. Keep your kicks slick, clean and laced whether sporty or preppy.

Get the right haircut. Go to a good salon at least once every 1-2 months and let the gay guy cut your hair. Be secure and let him with flirt with you, he'll give you the best hair cut you've ever had. Most women feel that a haircut can really make the difference between a guy who merely looks good and a guy who's good-looking. Experiment with facial hair and get the honest opinion from close girl friends whether this works on you, as some guys with average looks can "become" quite cute with a little facial hair, whereas it really doesn't look good on other guys. Listen to and trust girls you can talk to about this and take their advice.

All the top actors have personal trainers. You don't need one if you've got a good buddy who also likes to work out. You can motivate each other to do that extra rep, track each others' progress, and spot each other on the bench press. If you're not going to the gym now then you should, because it really just takes consistency to build muscle, with no more than an hour a day for three days a week. Think about that, 3 hours a week, and after a month you'll already start seeing and feeling results and you'll WANT to get back in the gym even more for bigger and better results. Get 1 gram protein per pound of bodyweight every day, easily met with a can of tuna, 2 glasses of milk (though avoid if acne-prone), 4 raw eggs in a glass like Rocky, some chicken and turkey, brazil nuts (rich in zinc too, great for acne as well as for your erections and sperm), and 2 protein shakes a day. If this works out for a month or two, move on to creatine, which the big guys in the gym will happily explain to you.

Sex appeal is half what you've got and half what they think you've got. Celebrity body language coach Alan Pease tells men to walk tall, with long, wides, deliberate strides, shoulders back, and look into people's eyes, meet their gaze and hold it when you're speaking to them and especially when you're listening to them. People and especially women find fewer things sexier in terms of subtle nonverbal communication than just the impression that someone is listening to them, and the best way to convey this is by sustained eye contact. Open your body up to the world, avoiding insecure defensive postures, keeping your hands out and open and your stance firm and wide. When you enter a room, "frame" yourself at the entrance/doorway for a good few seconds with a confident stance, surveying the scene and scanning the room. This will get the women to notice you and give you a vibe of the alpha male. Then if and when you do approach a particular person or especially girl, they will get a palpable sense that of all the people in the room you have specifically chosen their company over everyone else's, and they will unconsciously feel very flattered.

For Everyone:

- 80% of Americans have the cold sore-causing herpes simplex virus type I (the rest of the world is similarly afflicted); 55 million just in America experience recurrent breakouts. Don't let a cold sore keep you indoors for a "week-or-two". Here's what you do: at first tingle, press an ice cube firmly against the site where you feel the cold sore may be beginning to emerge, and keep an ice cube (it may take several) pressed against the site for MINIMUM 45 minutes. IF you do this as SOON as you first feel like a cold sore may be breaking out, 9 times out of 10 the freezing action simply stops the virus dead in its tracks. If you cannot intercept it in time, what you do is this: go to your local vitamin store, get the following and take as advised: 5000mg (5g) daily of L-Lysine.; 50-100mg daily of zinc; 1200-1600mg daily of echinacea; 10g daily of vitamin C; take all these WITH MEALS; also take 10g daily of MSM (powder) diluted in water and ensure you drink 4-5 liters of water daily. If followed exactly, cold sore WILL clear within maximum 4-5 days; GUARANTEED.

- Adopt the "Hollywood 80/20 Rule". That is, 80% good things, healthy diet, exercise, yoga/meditation, cleansing, detoxing, with an allowance of 20% indulgences, vices and goodies-- but easy on the voka and cocaine-- but treat yourself because after all we were not put on this earth to be punished!

- If you're not totally fabulous, you should be: If there is something about you that you don't like, don't keep obsessing over it and let it be an impediment to your happiness and self-worth. Go to a specialist, tell them your problem, and fix it.

- Appearance is not the most important thing in life: there are countless actors with legions of admirers, who are considered incredibly sexy by the opposite sex despite not having conventionally attractive looks. A casting director once told me that the most important thing for a young actor hoping to break through, besides talent of course, isn't so much being good-looking as it is having a unique look; as strange as it sounds it is actually very difficult for a young undiscovered actor to stand out if he is a dead-ringer for Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt-- the key is to look great but have your own look. Just so in you everyday life you should strive not to look like anyone else but to look the best that YOU can look as yourself, to meet your own genetic potential by optimizing the phenotype of your genotype, as a geneticist would say.

- Accountability: Hollywood's leading names pay thousands of dollars a day for a life coach to tell them that the number one precept for a succesful fulfilling life is to face their problems and concerns full on and deal with them. Paradoxically, the problems we most need to face are the ones we are least willing to. Write down a list of the problems you most need to deal with but have been avoiding in order of urgency and severity, and deal with them head on, knowing that the relief you will gain at having faced them and no longer having to consider them an unaddressed issue no matter what the outcome will make your life far more bearable than having a constant vague uneasiness in the back of your head from a problem you haven't been accountable for.

- Fake it till you make it: don't have the perfect life just yet? adopt the little outward signs of the life you want to lead, and it will surprisingly if gradually help facilitate the inward transformation. just as every women knows that the right haircut or pair of shoes can make them feel like a million bucks, the right business card or even a handshake that says "I am successful" can make it a self-fulfilling prophecy.

- Confidence, confidence, confidence. It gets you laid, gets you paid, and gets you made.

I hope you find this insightful and interesting. For questions or further contributions of your own, please feel free to throw in your own two cents.

yme,

I know acne is only a small part of it, but this was the most suitable forum for my post. Most people who make a living on their looks who have to worry about acne went all the way from the start and got an in-house dermatologist at an expensive beauty salon or a private, flexible GP to prescribe Accutane even if their acne was mild. Cameron Diaz is a notable exception in that she continues to suffer breakouts, to the point that like many of us has she stayed in her room for days (when she was expected at a film premiere in Cannes but couldn't bear to because of a particularly severe breakout). What celebrities like Diaz have hired personal dermatologists to tell them is pretty much what I've mentioned above. Most times when a celebrity hires a dermatologist for their acne the latter just give them Accutane.

I also read they use Pepto Bysmol as a chemical peel because it is salycilic acid. Use with a cotton ball. I tried it - didn't hurt or make me break out.

What do you mean about whether it's working or not based on your pics?

I don't know. I'm a straight guy and judging from your pics I guess you're good-looking, but what are you asking about? And I also have to say that your photos do raise some questions as to why you're spending so much time hanging out on a website called acne.org! It's like a feminist subscribing to a site called sluts.org-- it just doesn't quite seem right.

I assume you're a girl, right? How old are you, what's your lifestyle and what do you currently eat day by day (be honest! everything!).

I especially like the third step of the evening half of your daily regimen. It's certainly more productive than having nightmares about bad skin!

nopee im a boy, i say hormonal because, it seems nothing else can be the reason for my acne. i dont think its down to my pores being clogged, and harsh face washes and scrubs always make me break out, which is why im not washing with anything.

ok so heres what i do or have done for the past 2 weeks;

Morning:

Mug of hot water with juice of 1 lemon

Prepare a 2l bottle of water with 2 lemons juices

Eat 1 apples

A few organic snack bars

Lunch is usually something like grilled sausages or maybe cous cous

Eat 2 apples

Evening:

Get through another 2l bottle of water with 2 lemons juices in

Evening meal, could be anything

Eat 2 apples

I dont drink any soda or eat any chocolate or sweets. My lifestyle is pretty relaxed, im a bit stressed because ive got my GCSE exams coming up (im in england) and my home life ispretty stressed as i dont get on with my mum and sister at all. thanks.

Wow celebrities have got it made! Not only do they have tons of cash to spend on their looks, but they have private derms who prescribe them accutane for extremely mild acne.

I loved your post, but it kind of depressed me.....because here I am, wanting to look as good as celebrities, but I don't have the time, money, or patience to do any of those things.......mostly, I just don't have the willpower, especially when it comes to eating and exercising the 80/20 way. OH WELL!! I don't look half bad today anyway, I see a lot of people with worse problems than me!!!!!!

Cut out the couscous, organic snack bars, and grilled sausages. Eat more fruit, (more a variety) nuts (brazil nuts are the best and almonds), and eat fish or white meat chicken in place of the sausages. Hopefully you are drinking a lot of water. Try this for a few weeks. Cut back on the chicken, and eat the fish for a little while even. And warm the bottle of water with the lemons, cause warm water is good for the liver. (If you don't already do so)

Antony-

I'm just curious, how did you know that Justin Timberlake had been on Accutane. I read that Jessica Simpson said it on an E show once that she had, but I have never heard anything about Justin until you said something. I knew he had acne in high school because he has talked about that but I never knew how he got clear.
