Ok I dont post much but Im feeling somewhat depressed today. I have several issues regarding my face with the 2 biggest being scar tissue from a cortozone injection for 2 severe acne cysts and general scarring all over my face from years of breakouts.

Several years ago my original derm shot 2 cysts/boils I had with cortozone. It worked wonders by flattening them out but unfortunately he shot so much cortozone that he left dead scar tissue where the cysts once were. The whiskers dont even grow over them anymore so you can see an unsightly outline of the 2 areas of scar tissue. Sometimes the 1 area becomes ridgy and the other 1 swells out. Any time I go out I try to cover them with makeup. None of the derms Ive seen seem to know or even seem to want to figure out what to about it.My current derm is a nice guy but in 4 years I see very limited improvement. When I first saw him he said "sometimes the more challenging cases are most rewarding. He performed a couple of laser surgeries which gave me temporary improvement but unfortunately, it didnt last.

I have been on accutane twice and I can say Ive been happy with the results. I very rarely get a breakout now and when I do I apply REZAMID to it and it zaps it away in a day or 2. However, the damage has been done.

In addition to 2 laser surgeries, Ive had a series of chemical peels which improved the skin that wasnt damaged but didnt help the damaged part at all. Recently I went to see 2 derms in Chicago and 1 of them said he couldnt do anything for me since Ive only been off accutane for a year. I suspect he just didnt want to bother with a severe case like mine. The 2nd one suggested subcision followed by laser surgery. That would help the scarring but not the scar tissue issue I have which actually bothers me more. My current derm always suggests something different each time in. Once its microdermabrsion, then its Fascea, etc.. I honestly dont think they have any idea what to do with me.

Does anyone know any top notch derms/cosmetic surgeons in the Chicago area?

The lack of confidence I have is unbelieveable. My social life has crawled to a halt as I come up with excuses for avoiding friends and family when Im feeling particularly depressed. I also know I cannot be good for someones image out in public so Ive lost friends that way as well. It takes me an hour just to put makeup on when I do get the guts to go out.

Good luck to everyone else.

Hi Jacob,

Just wanted to tell you about Dr. Carolyn Jacob. She is a great derm who is somewhat of a specialist in treating acne scars. She just recently did a subcision on me that has--I hope--turned out very well. She also has some lasers that might help you. In my opinion, she is both smart and compassionate. She is in the Skokie area. Check her out and please keep your chin up--there is hope!

yeah, please keep your head up. so much of what you said resonated wiht me -- i have been making so many excuses with my friends -- food poisoning, cold, not feeling well, bad headache -- god, i could go on and on.

this is tough, but stay strong. maybe you should read a book about positive thinking. i read 'creative visualizations' and it was actually helpful.

Thanks Hols..Im hopeful as well..Are you happy with yours? She is the first derm who has said she only needs 1 session to get this done..all the other ones said 3-4 session. Plus her price seems fair. Although the consult fee was kind of high I thought $150.

Thanks again Hols!

Best of luck Jacob - hope the subcision works out well for you. It seems to be one of the few scar treatments that has really given good results.

Some derms seem to think that a series of treatments work better, but I have heard of 90% results from 1 treatment with a deep scar. I guess it depends on the experience of the derm.

It's always good to go to a recommended derm, sounds like you will be in safe hands.

I'd like to make a recommendation to you - start taking 50mg of zinc (ideally OptZinc or chellated Zinc) with 1-2 grams of Vitamin C every day - this helps your body with healing and also improves the bodys natural ability to build collagen needed. Other useful supplements would be Alpha Lipoic Acid. A good multi vit also helps.

Do keep us updated on your progress.

Jacob,

Yes, I questioned her too about the possibility of needing more than one subcision and she said in her experience people only needed one. I think she probably has really good technique. She wrote a medical paper on subcision so she probably has studied it extensively. She did my right cheek about a month ago and--fingers crossed--it still looks good. There a bit of a blood clot still under one area that might be giving me false hope because it is raising up that area so I'll just have to wait. Yes, the consultation fee is kind of high, I think it is just a one time charge tho.

You will be in my thoughts, because I don't want to steer anybody in the wrong direction!

It is difficult dealing with having acne scars, that is for sure. Some days you don't feel to badly and other days it feels awful. I understand completely.

I'm not sure what type of scars you have but you might want to look into subcision or needling. They are both excellent options for depressed scars, particularly the "rolling" type.

I am glad to hear that you'll be seeing a reputable Dr. and hope it all works out well. :)

Jacob, I read about a cosmetic surgeon who practices in Illinois. His name is Edward B. Lack. The article that was written about him focused on non ablative lasers to treat acne scars. More than likely he is familiar with several different procedures. At any rate, he's another resource you can check out. I think you can find him on line.

Jacob, thank you for you post.

I wish you the best, to your visit to your new derm.

As i was asking, for affordable, a meant like $1,000 or less. What are the prices of each procedure you know, that cost below $1,000?
