My dermatologist gave me a dark spot removal cream years ago and I overused it in certain areas. Here's a picture of the biggest scar it left on my cheek. I've went through 3 laser removal treatments and they did nothing to remove it. I'm starting to believe it may never go away and my skin is permanently damaged.
Pigmentation like this usually fades with time. Hopefully yours will as well. Keeping it out of the sun is important, but you probably already know that.
On a positive note, I would just think that's a mole. Lots of people have them and they look fine and just add character. But even so, it should slowly fade away over time.
