One Combination Scar Treatment Enough?

Hi Everyone!

I had had a really bad medication induced breakout that lasted for months this year and left tethered saucer shaped scars all over my cheeks and chin and jawline. I am finally done with accutane and planning my first Scar treatment with a specialist in NJ. Because I'm currently living in the UK for school I have to go for a one week period and have the treatments done in that time. After assessing my scars he said they weren't that bad so he'd do PRP, Subcision, infini, and fraxel in one go and that would likely be enough but I might need another treatment in 6 months to a year. The thing is it's 2600. And while my scarring may not be severe I'd still say it's very widespread and tethered so I'm confused how it could be very improved in one go and if I'm being ripped off. The dr is Rappaport. This has causedso much emotional crap and I worry I'm blowing money on another disappointment. Would love to know thoughts.

Ok your going to the UK for school. Why not go see Dr Chu in London. He is cheap for treatment. Can do 3 of his cheap packages. I would do this over Rappaports mega packages for $$$$. Chu does manual scar methods only.

Regarding mega treatments the body does not heal like this. We are not meant to sandblast our skin with as many things as possible. As you said your scarring is light. Why not even try some at home procedures. One can do a few glycolic peels and or derminator (microneedling) and see how they improve.

The skin takes months to heal, ... it's verrrrrrrrrrrrry slow. When we combine things, healing can go wrong. I get it, you feel rushed. I have never seen one treatment fix someone completely of even basic scarring (urban legend). When we space things out and allow time to heal we can see what works and does not. I had to take Rappaport off the list as he became arrogant and about $$$$, refusing to just do subcision or treatments as needed.

Treatment is based off your scarring, a picture is helpful here, not off a package a Dr sells. You could very well goto a med spa for Infini rf needling as apposed to all that from Rap...., depends on the scars

This is the downside of having a recommendations lists. It's a necessary thing for people who aren't well-versed in acne scar revision, and are vulnerable to being taken advantage of by doctors. I didn't know that Rappaport is no longer recommended (I've never been a fan) but he probably got a lot more business in that area because of the recommendation here.

Don't be suckered into the packages, they're just money making schemes. You're committing before even knowing if your skin can handle 10 things being thrown at it at once. We've seen many examples of people who've had damage from that approach. You need time to heal and reassess each and every treatment to see if it is compatible. I did one c02 laser, which was a disaster, and thankfully was not dumb enough to be talked into another (this is from a doctor who USED to be recommended here a long time ago).

beautifulambition thank you or your input. Something didn't feel right in my gut and now I understand why. It's a costly risk. Where is this recommendation list? Also, I've attached photos below. They're a little old so redness has subsided but there is depth to them and I also have spread out old scarring on my forehead. So one treatment does not sound right to me. But do you still think based on the photos I could still be a candidate for home treatment at least for a while? Thank you. About to schedule to see dr. Chu.

dazzed thank you for your response, both what you and beautifulambition say ales a lot of sense and confirms what I already felt but wants to ignore in order to achieve relief. Where is the list? Can't even to find it. I tried attaching photos of my scarring in response to beautifulambition but not sure it showed up so will try to upload again. As I said before redness has subsided quite significantly but all the scarring still is below it with in the opinion me depth.  Also have forehead scarring. Dr R looked at one of them and said it looked ole chicken pox so he wouldn't fix it, like you're just going to do all of those treatments and avoid the one right in the middle of my head?! Okay.

I also wanted to add that I'm originally from Colorado and will be going home frequently. Was wondering if perhaps someone knows about anyone good in that area as I'd be home and able to easily have support from family.

Honestly I would see Dr Chu, if nothing at all (at home treatments) .... Those in the UK - London are very lucky. People are flying to him from other places in Europe. His prices are very reasonable. He only does manual scar work, ... so no laser or filler. His scar package is low even in USD. If you do a search you will see he is popular there.

Colorado, I don't know of anyone who is a acne scar specialist, I am sure there is med spa's to do basic peels and or other energy procedures and general derms.

What I see is textural issues, ... perhaps a few rolling scars.

You could be fine just buying a derminator (Google) and doing a few glycolic peels. Your scarring is pretty minor, don't over treat it. Differin gel is O.T.C at Target, etc... here and you can try that nightly as well.

Allow time to heal between treatments. If you need a more detailed guide for peels goto the FAQ (also where the references are). IT's the very top post of the acne scar sub "scar treatments". There is a mega post (link to peels). IF it were me I would start with some at home treatments, then consider Chu, etc... Chu is always there if you need subcision for the pits. Chu can also do a peel if your not comfortable.

BA, thanks so much for the advice. As dazzed mentioned it's interesting to sort through all the options and knowing when to trust a costmetic and scar revision Dr. advice. I will schedule to see Dr. Chu! And will also plan get the derminator. I purchased a dermaroller from Banish acne scars but find the membership quite pricey for what you end up getting. One last question, any good ones in California? I've heard about Dr. Emer but im guessing hes $$$$. Thanks again!

Dr Emer is terrible. All advertising. I have seen him ruin patients with mega treatment sessions. He just did a $XX,XXX.00job on someone. That is ridiculous, only in Hollywood with a full production-marketing team. Rullan is Honest in San Diego and a top Dr.

Banish is a terrible company. Stop paying those ridiculous prices. I honestly hate that company and how they basically sell rebranded stuff for 10x markup. Their topicals are ridiculously overpriced. They're a prime example of a company that pays A LOT to instagram "influencers" for marketing, but sell subpar products and take advantage of people who aren't knowledgeable. Emer has very questionable business ethics. On realself for example, Emer will copy and paste the same comment over and over on every acne scarring question. He doesn't even bother to read the actual question. A word of advice.... if you go to a doctor and they force you to talk to a consultant first, that means they are trying to sell as much possible. I wouldn't be surprised if his lawyers send a cease and desist letter in 24hours.
