Acne Scar Consultation w/ Dr. Rapaport

Hi all,

First post but long time lurker.

I recently called Dr. Rapaport's Old Bridge office to schedule for a consultation. However, the receptionist indicated I needed a phone call consultation first, which costs $50, before seeing the doctor in person. I asked about their virtual consultation, but the receptionist seemed to not know about it despite me mentioning that it was on their website.

Anyone who has gone to Dr. Rapaport can provide their experience and if the above is true?

Thanks.

I did a consult with him recently but chose not to work with him. My issue is that he basically refused my request for an "a la carte" approach ... he preferred a bundle of services which is not something I was interested in.

I did not visit his Old Bridge office so maybe that's why I was not asked to do a phone consult.

It's still worth it to do the consult - at a minimum it's cheap advice. And everyone is different - maybe you'll like what he has to offer. Please let me know how it goes. Best of luck.

This doctor needs to be put in the "Do Not Even Bother" bin. He charges ridiculous prices for what he offers and frankly I have yet to see any decent results from him. I have had personal conversations with people who have gone to him and they are not positive.

A phone call for $50? That's a new one.

It appears that everyone love him on RealSelf and, equally, everyone hates him on Yelp. Go figure!

I would usually write off anyone who charges a consultation fee. That tells me he or she places a higher value on money than the patient's concerns. Anyway, send him a detailed email with a few pictures and see if he replies in a timely manner.

While he does seem to know his stuff about scar revision, he looks to be someone who comes off as arrogant and charges too much. Most of his reviews talk about his attitude and bad experiences with the clinic.

50 bucks for a phone call is outrageous. If he is too stubborn to compromise with the patient, I'd skip him.

Knowing the right things to say and actually having a good aesthetic sense are two different things. Anyone can recite stuff from a textbook.

Realself has not been a reliable resource for a while. Most of their reviews are completely fake (zero pictures, 1 or 2 sentences).

I will save you $50 he is a energy based Dr. (some of you want this) Who now ($$$$$$) specializes in prp with hair transplant. He is on shows like The Doctors. Watch the videos below and you will see, without a consult.

There are bad reviews for all the Drs we suggest on the site. People love to complain. If you didn't read every review we really have no idea why they complained. 9 times out of 10 it's the office wait is terrible, they are expensive, or they ignore a "overly" needypatient. The biggie is unrealistic expectations (managing them) and BDD (yes Drs can be terrible but so can patients). The top acne scar Drs worldwide have bad reviews, why do you suppose that is, haha. You goto realself to complain and on yelp to say how terrible it is, ... the truth is somewhere in the middle. Happy people do not post and live in contented bliss. Ever read a Amazon review (some silly stuff).

I have nothing to sell you, and nothing to gain. Endorsing no one, I am helping you for free with your research.

Uh okay. That was..... Interesting. The difference between a $125 in person consult vs the phone is that they can actually see you in real life. The difference is more than obvious. You're telling it's acceptable to charge $50 for a phone call and then $200 for an in person consultation?

Honest question, what is your relationship to some of these doctors? Why do you defend certain doctors so vociferously?

Did you read the ENTIRE post, from the top to the bottom? That was NOT what he meant.

I've already stated that I was personally against paying for consultations. But, needless to say, you kinda get what you pay for. So if you walk into a FREE consultation and then come out feeling neglected because the doc was a douchebag, you really have no reason to gripe. That was your choice, just as it's your choice to go elsewhere.

I think it's fair for the doctor to charge a consultation fee, and waive it if the patient gets treatment. They would be dealing with window shoppers all day long if they didn't.

Thank you everyone for your input. I have pretty much read everything on Dr. Rapaport on this message board as well as some on Yelp and Realself. I understand people will tend to post negative experiences on these of platforms. Regardless, I was still wanting to experience it for myself especially due to proximity. However, I was quite surprised of the $50 phone call consultation especially since the doctor would not be able to assess my face. I'm not opposed to paying a consultation in person, since most will waive it if the individual decides to pursue the recommended treatment. I guess I was a bit put off by a phone call consultation fee, and I was looking to see if this is always the case with this doctor as I have not seen any comments regarding it. I will try contacting a different office branch. Thank you again for your comments!

@JBJ87 I would honestly check out Dr Novick. When I spoke to him on the phone I felt 100% confident in him. Confident enough that I'd drive 4-5 hours to see him. This all depends on your scar type, etc. From what i gathered he is one of the best in the game for subcision + fillers.

Thanks for the insight BA, Rapaport seems to know what he is talking about on RS - however he does not have lots of photos. Attitude can not be excused. Some people think a doctor is arrogant for talking down a treatment, or another doctor- that just disrespect IMO. As everyone knows revision of acne scars is both a physical and psychological treatment, and any doctor who does not acknowledge that, nor understand the acne scar patient, should not be promoting their services. I absolutely agree with you in regards to seeing 2-3 specialist before anyone makes an informed decision. This will give a balanced perspective on the expertise and insight of the doctor. I think acknowledging the psychological impact plays a HUGE role in acne scar treatments. Self proclaimed doctors will treat the scars that they see, one that is dedicated will always work with you to revise the ones the bother you most and care for your psyche. You only have one face, so take BAs advice, see as many Specialists as you can - within reason. Email or talk to the patients who have had treatment - there are many fake reviews, esp for high profile Plastics and Dermatologist who hire marketing teams. Just my two cents worth.

I should also add that Obi's advice applies not only to acne specialists but the others areas of specialty. There are way too many medical schools these days cranking out useless doctors, whose sole motive for entering medicine is $$$. Hence, it's in your best interest to be very selective in who you choose for your health. Your life depends on it. I've seen too many crackpots, especially those who completely lack empathy.
