Erythromycin, upset stomach...anti-biotics for acne???? Really?

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody,

I am going out my mind. I have had acne for three years now. I always had clear skin until turning 24, it’s persisted since then. I get it on my back, although that has been there for longer but most notably it’s on my forehead. Always breaking out, sometimes it will subside and I’ll get a glimmer of hope only for it to come back...

I have tried lots of difference creams and two courses of anti-biotics, Oxytetracyline and Lymecycline. Guess what? Neither worked...now I have been prescribed Erythromycin and trecalin (topical). Is this a joke or what? Are anti-boitics even effective? I feel like they just get thrown out and I keep reading the occasional comment about how bad they can be and how ineffective they are for acne.

I have been on Erythromycin for 2-3 weeks and if anything my breakout has gotten worse in the past few days. It also upsets my stomach and gives me some minor cramps. Should I keep taking this stuff? Are anti-boitics even effective? What are peoples experiences here? I’m very tired of this battle.

Thank you

I’ve have taken all of the antibiotics that you mentioned and they all worked and cleared up my acne but everytime the acne became resistant and they stopped working eventually.Everybody is different though and if you feel they are not working I would stop taking them personally.

So if they just come back, what's the point of using them? Did you manage to treat your acne??

I guess for some people it simply doesn’t return. I have to say that the state my face was in,the 6+ months or so that the antibiotics worked was a massive relief and enabled me to actually live my life ie leave my house and socialise etc.I gave up on antibiotics eventually and decided to clean up my diet/lifestyle massively which has helped greatly.i still get pimples here and there but it’s under control to the point I wouldn’t even say I had acne now, compared to the horrific cystic acne I used to get its 1000 times better now and without medication : ). Personally for me antibiotics were a great short term fix but I think it’s important to find the root cause of the problem rather than rely on medication. Good luck
