That 5% mandelic acid is a toner. You'd have to pour some into a cotton pad, then wipe it on your face. You'll feel a little stinging, but it should go away fairly quickly. I'd say use it at least 30 minutes prior to using tretinoin.

How are you doing?

Hey there how are you, im still using the product.. so far I haven't seen any improvement with the comedones. I feel like althought the product has 5% mandelic acid, it also has a lot of alcohol which dries out my skin a little. I'm of course more dry than anyone else because im on tretionin and benzoyl peroxide. I will keep using it though and I do have hope that it will clear my comedones.. My left cheeks however is suffering from the use of tretionin, its looks to me as if its pitted or beginning to show mild scars which never ever ever happened to me. As much as I hated those comedones, however if I can take back tretionin, I certainly will. It did take away some comedones but left me suffering from weird bumps and pigmention and now scars.

How long have you been using it now? Makeup Artist's choice told me that mandelic acid penetrates best with alcohol. By the way, how often are you using your tretinoin? Once a day?

I have been using it for 6 days now and yes alcohol works as a vehicle for the mandelic acid to help it better penetrate the skin. I have been on tretionin for exactly 3 month and yes I use it once a day everyday 0.05% gel form.I have been using it for 6 days now and yes alcohol works as a vehicle for the mandelic acid to help it better penetrate the skin. I had this exact problem for years!! And I finally solved what to do! I always said if I figure out the solution i will come back to share it with others! I had this problem for probably about 8-10 years since I was younger, and the only way I could get rid of it was by squeezing them only I hated it cuz it would leave scars and red marks behind, I tried everything from OTC to prescription strength to diet to chemical peels etc. So, this summer I finally figured out the cure. I went and got a facial with EXTRACTIONS, and it was from the local spa, not a fancy dermatologist, AND here’s the important part to keep them from coming back, I stopped using the face moisturizer that had oily in them, so stop using those cetaphil ones and make sure you get one that says on it, OIL FREE. The extractions get rid of them and the oil free moisturizer keeps them away. I promise you, try this, the extraction facial may be a little pricey, I paid 50 dollars, however it was worth it. And I actually went through it a second time, bout 2 months later because I ran out of the oil free moisturizer I had and started my old one, and BAM the closed comedones came back after using that moisturizer for only 1 week. Fortunately I didn’t get that many so she didn’t have to do much. So it’s been about 5 months now and my face is still bump free! My makeup looks flawless and if I don’t want to, I don’t have to worry about putting on makeup everyday to cover up my hideous acne.

Now my routine is:
Dermatologica Clean Start Wash Off Cleanser

Witch Hazel for toner

Neutrogena Oil Free Moisturizer with SPF 15

Hi Jessie, thank you so much for your comment. So tretionin was the worst thing that a dermatology ever put me on. If I tell you, you will never believe the pain I went through. Every single one of the comedones purged into inflammed cystic painfull acne. I had to stop it at 4 month because it ruined my skin. I wish you commented earlier and I wish that I actually got them extracted instead of going through all this pain. Thankfully today its much better and although im suffering from lumps that is left deep under the skin as a result. I'm still patiently waiting them to disappear. Btw I have a close friend that had the same problem as me but worst and recently she went and got them extracted then the lady did a peel on her and it looks like nothing was ever there.. I wish someone advised me to do that. I wouldve never went to the derm.

Hi Marcela! I know this has been a while now, but I was wondering if you saw any benefit from the mandelic acid? I have the small lump under the skin problem, and I'm desperately looking for a solution!

Hi love, sorry to reply late. So what I think is the real solution for these clogged pores is actually getting them extracted. Go to a good esthetician and have her do extractions on you. after that, you can MAINTAIN your skin using the mandelic acid. The acid is great for maintenance but it does not remove them on its own. They MUST get extracted.

Not sure if you’ve gotten rid of your closed comedone issue, but I’ve been frequenting acne boards these past couple months to find a solution. My cheeks have been plagued with CCs for about 8 months. I tried proactive, salicylic acid, different benzoyl peroxide strengths... nothing helped. I finally found something that worked well for me so I wanted to share.

i put pure apple cider vinegar (with mother or whatever it is) undiluted onto a cotton ball and dabbed it onto my closed comedones. Within minutes they got tiny white heads on them, which I gently popped them all and put on hydrocolloid acne stickers. I left the acne stickers on all night. Took them off in the morning and my cheeks are 100% better.

just wanted to share in case I can help someone else out!
