Birth control or wait it out?

Recommended Posts

So thanks to the GI problems I started having my doctor has put me off all medications except one that I'm taking to help fix my GI. Until that's resolved she told me she I can't try a new birth control or any other oral medication. I'm having an EDG on the 9th which will hopefully tell me what exactly is wrong. The specialist I saw thinks it could be both an ulcer and acid reflux, which someone else also said could have possibly come from being on birth control and also taking a ton of advil from the migraines it caused. My old doctor refused to give me migraine meds, and refused to switch my birth control, pretty much why he's my OLD doctor. Anyway my skin has improved some even though I'm no longer taking the antibiotic or spiro I was prescribed. Currently I'm just using cleocin gel which I know isn't very strong. Even though my skin isn't as horrible as it was when I first got the bad breakout from going off birth control its still nowhere near as good as it was on the pill. So here's my dilemma, on one hand my migraines have gone away, I'm finding it easier to stay in shape and have lost the weight I gained on the pill. Aside from the GI problems I feel pretty much fine, but shallow though it is, I really hate looking in the mirror and seeing the acne that's still there. I kind of want to give birth control one more try, since I was only tried to different pills (first on yaz and didn't notice any migraines, mood changes or weight gain, but got breakthrough bleeding and got switched to ortho tri cyclen by the old doctor after being on it for about 2 1/2 -3 months.) I feel like its kind worth at least trying a monophasic pill like ortho cyclen or something else before completely giving up on it. On the other hand, my skin does seem like its kinda getting better? A lot of whats left just looks like discoloration which I figure will fade as it always has before even though its never lasted this long. Weirdly the bumps I do are unlike any I've had before they start small like tiny under bumps and finally come up a month later and stay forever. I really don't know what I should do. I know the year right before I went on on birth control my skin was staying clearer longer and breaking out less so I almost feel like I was at the point of out growing my acne then (I'm 23 now, was 21 when I went on bc.) So which is the better choice? Wait out my skin from here or try birth control one more time?

I have a bias against birth control because it really messed with my system and my head (mood swings) when I was on Alesse21, but had constant epic migraines while on Minestrin.

Taking BCP isn't the way. Messing with your hormones shouldn't be the answer to clear skin...I don't know about you, but I'd rather take excellent care of myself in terms of nutrition, exercise, and skin care instead of relying on a pill with a bunch of different long and short-term side effects.

With love,

I totally agree with you on the fact that birth control messes with your system. My migraines were so bad they lasted all day and led to spending a lot of nights vomitting. I already eat very well and exercise I've just never been able to controlled my acne fully before this. I do believe I have some sort of hormonal imbalance since my skin was very managable on the pill. I really would like to believe that I'll outgrow the acne but considering that now I'm almost 24 I don't think I will. My mom also had really bad acne from puberty to late adulthood so I don't know if I even have a chance. I'm open to more natural suggestions though if they really work.

I also have crazy mood swings because of the pill, but luckily I don't get the migraines.... I run 4x/week 40 minutes and eat extremely carefully. I feel obligated to be on the pill because my acne is extremely hormonal- I only really get pimples during PMS, and I'll go from clear skin to sometimes pretty severe cysts. It's a constant battle and I'd love to know if there are healthier alternatives.

Yup. Pretty much everytime my skin is improving and I'm like "yay it's getting better I can wait this out" I get my period and go right back to square one. Even the discoloration from where it's healed looks ten time worse during my period.
