I can't tell if i have serious scarring or if this is just hyperpigmentation. I took the pic in really bright fluorescent lights (it makes it much more prominent, does seem like shadows are dropped).

If it is scarring, is it shallow? Will it go away with something like retin-a?

It is realy hard to tell from pictures if something is scarring or not when the spot you are referring to is still red. This is because pictures are twodimensional and the only way to tell if something is indented (and thus as scar) is through color differences. And when a spot is still red it can easily create the illusion of a scar because of that colour difference.

From your picture, it realy looks like you have scarring, but you can best see this yourself. Is there a texture difference? If so, then there is scarring. If not, then it is most likely just a red mark.
Even if it is scarring, I would not call this severe. The redness always makes it look way worse than it realy is.

Thanks for the responses everyone.

@Arte90, there are a few areas with slight texture differences but it seems really shallow... If I press my finger againstmy skin and run it across, there are a few points where I can feel a VERY subtle "drop". Again I do not know what constitutes as severe scarring. Maybe it's not as shallow as I think after all.

@Hyperpigmentation Expert. Here is an album of some pictures I just took. It's hard to take HD photos so I took a bunch so hopefully it will give you an idea: http://imgur.com/a/FMWWc

What do you think?

Just the lightest bit of scarring. Only noticeable since it made your skin slightly uneven. But ya a Retinoidwillhelp with the scarsand unevenskin.
