Hi, I suffer from moderate acne, which has gotten worse in the last two years (suddenly started getting hormonal cystic acne, don't know why but I suspect it coincided with developing IBS. But maybe not, no idea really).

I've always read through the forum and take comfort from everyone's stories. However, there are some phrases I don't understand. When someone describes their experiences with a certain treatment, they'll often say this treatment "brought old acne to the surface", as if the acne was hiding under our skin until a "purge" causes it to rise to the surface. What is the science behind this? How do you know it's not new acne caused by putting something on your face your skin doesn't agree with?

Does this mean that if I keep getting bumps in the same place on my cheek or chin, this is really just the same pimple coming back for years? And if the same spot comes back repeatedly, what is the point in purging at all? Won't it just come back?
