My Secret To Clear Skin After 10 Years - How To Keep Your Acne Under Control

Recommended Posts

I have been fighting acne for over more than 10 years. Pretty much since my hormones went wild at my pr-teen years. As a youngster, my face always seemed pretty decent with only a few blemishes here and there. However, there always seemed to be at least one or two wondering around my face. It wasn't until my college years when I realize my ance issues were no longer a "teenager thing." I realized that my skin type was combination and acne prone. At the age of 22-26, my acne gave a whole turn to the point where I had big cystic pimples all around my cheeks, temples, and some around my mouth. I tried every single thing you can think of. But instead I only made my acne worsen. Leaving me with low self esteem, depression, and self consciousness.

I never saw a dermatologist because I knew that that would automatically expose me to harsh topical creams like, high percentage BP, or worst yet, Accutane. But in hopes of finally exposing my self to a real cure and a professional, I was willing to seek for a dermatologist. But never did i imagine I would came across with my REAL skin salvation. And as a matter of fact, that is the name of the holistic Acne clinic that saved my skin.

SkinSalvation guaranteed me clear skin in 3-6 months. I can tell you that in less than 2 months I saw a dramatic change. But today, after being a consistent client of almost 8 months, I have learned many of the causes of my acne. I also learned that I am a genetically acne prone individual, and it is up to me to keep my acne under control. My acne however left me with unwanted pitted scars. Which they may not seem as bad in the eyes of others, but aren't we our worst critics?

Today I am still a client of Skin Salvation. I follow them on their social media, and read their blogs religiously. They are the most caring people I could ever come across with. Their acne clinic may not offer harsh treatments such as microdermabrasions or fraxel lasers, but they sure are there to provide you with less harsh chemical peels, needed extrations, or even a free "POP a zit."

I am also using a dermaroller from banish acne scars. But I can't tell if my scars have improved much. I eventually want something deeper? But at the same time I have seen, read, and may be a little scare of any effects anything more harsh like lasers or injections could leave my face looking like. I also use most products recommended by my acne clinic and I am on some vitamin A 2 serum.

In the mean time and without further a due, here is what helped clear my skin/keep my acne under control. I hope this helps anyone who reads this, and just know that YOU are not alone.

DIET: Being in an acne safe diet means cutting certain foods from your every day diet. Give it a period of 35 days to up to 3 months to see this truly works for you. But trust me, give it a real fair shot!

NO: Dairy, Coffee (yes coffee!!), gluten, sugary drinks, alcohol, sugar (cut it out), seaweed, turkey, shrimp, and SOY (yes even soy milk, so no more soy lattes please. Make your self a favor and get more involved into cooking rather than eating out. Restaurants tend to use a ton of cheap oils (hydrogenated oils) that can cause us to break out. Also, stop going to starbucks. Please? Check out the SkinSalvation blog for acne safe recipes and more. Follow on pinterest!

So WTH do I eat then?

YES: Almond milk (recommend whole foods brand), coconut milk okay, cashew milk okay, rice milk, hemp. Definitely no soy milk. Caffeinated teas are okay if you feel that you need the jitters. Black tea is my fave. I add vanilla almond milk to sweeten. Any other tea is just fine. Drink some! Green tea maybe? Brown rice, quinoa, corn tortillas, gluten free food? Just be careful as some processed foods labeled as GF can have lots of starchy ingredients in them. Having your gut digest them as simple carbs or sugar! Ah! There are tons of goodies you can eat. Just be an acne safe savy. Be smart, and DRINK WATER!! Better yet, lemon water ; )

Supplements: Check out anti- inflammatory supplements like Zinc, (recommend 50mg a day) or tumeric supplement. One of my favorites is Zyflammend. Thee bomb to help my inflammation. Also have a nice probiotic supplement. I take, Kyo Dophilus with enzymes (more for people who eat meat). Last but not least this is the supplement that I swear by in the clearing of my skin. Fish Oil. Don't just take any cheap one. Do your research and invest in a good brand. I recommend Blue Royal Cod liver fish oil. Here is the link to buy: {LINK REMOVED}

PRODUCTS: Anything that touches your face such as shampoos, conditioners, lotions, sunscreens, and of course MAKE-UP, are definitely something to be aware of. Stay away from sulfates and oil free products. Even coconut oil!! To some people it can be a miracle antibacterial for skin, but because you want to be aware you want to say away from it from now. It can be cloggy for your skin for sure!

What other ingredients should I avoid then?

Here is a stay away/watch out for these ingredients list:

The Regimen: Keep it simple, not harsh. You only need a simple cleanser along a few more steps as part of your regimen. The cleanser depends on your type of skin. Oily Skin: Charcoal cleanser (I use the skin salvation cleanser), or a mild tea tree oil cleanser. You can find one at your local organics store. Make sure to carry your list of ingredients. Check out Juice Beauty's acne skin cleanser! Dry Skin: Green tea cleanser (I use the skin salvation when dry), or aloe vera cleanser. After your cleanser you want to ICE your skin. ICE, ICE, BABY! Ice in the am after you wash your face, and ice at night. I do at least 5 mts in the morning if rushing, and do at least 10 at night if too tired. Normally i do 20 minutes. Feel free to go longer! After icing follow with your toner. The one many people love and trust is pure witch hazel. I tone with mandelic acid by skin salvation. Last thing to do is moisturize with a gel. Find a natual aloe vera gel! I use a moisturizing gel from sS. Then you can spot treat with BP 2.5% I use mine from acne.org YAY! :dan: If your skin is too dry, check out natural rose water sprays to give it a nice spray. Don't forget to use an SPF during the day. Very vey important. All my moisturizers and SPF's are of course from skin salvation acne clinic. You can shop at their online store. Feel free to do your research and find ONLY acne safe products to try out.

Acne Safe Make up: Sometimes acne safe make up or "clean make up" is not about the brand but the ingredients of the products. Here are some of my all time, HOLY GRAIL, acne safe make up products. Tarte BB cream, (clear tube with wooden cap), Alima pure satin matte mineral foundation powder, Alima pure blushes, I love the shade Apricot, Alima pure shadows, and bronzers, 100 % pure foundation powder. You can certainly find one that fits your skin type and works for you.

Stress Free: In order for all your hard work to finally begin to work, you must do your best to stay stress free. I know, work can be stressful, but stress it self doesn't cause your acne, it can only aggravate it. Go for a run, play a sport, do some yoga! Be grateful, be happy! :surprised: I don't know, read a book? How about "Don't sweat the small stuff" by Richard Carlson.

Social Media: Follow on Instagram @{USERNAMES REMOVED}

Check out the Skin Salvation online store or if you are from the bay area feel free to give them a visit. They are located in San Francisco, CA.

**Disclaimer: I do not work, or are paid by this small local clinic. I am just a client of them who has nothing but love for them**

Hope this list of things that helped me clear my skin and keep my acne under control can help YOU. Good LUCK!

You can do it! :hifive:

With love and support,

Hi! My name's Daniela and I'm 16 years old, and I've had acne since I was 11. I tried everything, topical creams, went to dermatologist and went on 2 different types of drugs (doxiclat and mayesta) and my acne dissapeared when I finished my last treatment (mayesta), but 3 months after, my acne came back and worse than ever! So I decided to find a natural way to cure it. I threw away all my skin products and now I use a natural soap and jojoba oil. I'm celiac so I can't eat any gluten, and I cut sugar, dairy products (I drink rice and coconut milk) white rice, nuts, oils, and all processed foods out of my diet, because I saw on internet that people cured their acne with a healthy diet. Well, I've been eating a lot of vegetables and fruits, drinking lots of water and doing excercise for almost 4 months now, and my skin gets worse every single day, I'm so sad because I don't know why everyone cured their acne but me :( It's so frustrating, I don't know if I'm doing something wrong... I started taking probiotics 3 days ago and I'm also eating oats with 1 banana, blueberries and cinnamon for breakfast. My meals consist basically of veggies and sweet potatoes or brown rice/quinoa and some days I would have fish or chicken, chickpea soup or bean soup with veggies...I don't know what to do, can you give me any advice please?

Btw I'm glad that you could cure your acne! You are beautiful :3

How much did 'skin salvation' pay you to advertize for them on acne.org? Con

I wish they had.. since the struggles is too real. Hahaha! I just can't say enough good things about them. I also believe in the acne.org regimen as i still use some of their products.

Do you think im going to natural for mine?

I only use water and oil free lotion in the morning and aloe vera with lotion at night

I also only exfoliate with sugar/honey twice a week and apply lemon to the pimples i get.

It has helped my cystic acne HEAPS however i find that its making my pores more clogged. Is there anything natural to help the clogged pores??

Your skin looks great btw! :)

Going all natural helps some people but not everybody's skin will take it the same. I would recommend you to not exfoliate your skin with sugar as it can be a little too hard for your skin. Being acne prone kinda automatically makes us be in the 'sensitive skin' type. So watch out for that. Try doing it less. The way I exfoliate is simply using a gauze with witch hazel both morning and night. It has helped me a lot. Also, be careful on lemon for spot treatment. I use the acne.org. It is HOLY GRAIL pimple killer. Good luck! : )

Hi Daniela!

I'm sorry you are going through a frustrating situation with your skin right now. I know how it feels when you are trying many many things and they just don't seem to work. I felt so depressed at one point.. but don't get discouraged. I'm sure it will be okay! You are young and the cause of your acne can actually be due to other reasons. The first thing I would recommend you is to relax. Try to not stress so much about this or anything else there might be going on around you. Definitely try to sleep well if you are lacking sleep. 8-10 hours sound about right. Another thing I recommend is watch the jojoba oil on its own. Even though its recommended for people with dry skin, it can be a little cloggy for your skin. What soap are you using? And have your give acne.org a shot? I would recommend you the following things:

- ICE: Ice can be your best friend if you are having inflamed acne. Ice your face for about 10-20 mts at night AND at least 5-10 if you are rushing in the am. That will certainly help reduce any inflamed pimps for sure.

-ZINC: Try taking a zinc supplement every day with food. 50mg a day should definitely help with inflammation as well. Sometimes they make me a bit drowsy esp. if i don't eat. I would recommend taking Zyflammed better, though it can be a bit more expensive.

-GOOD FATTY OILS: I honeslty swear by fish oil. Try taking some if you aren't already. I highly recommend the Blue Royal codd fish oil ( the dairy free one). Can be found on amazon. Last but not least check out doing a candida cleanse. It is a great way to balance hormones, or you could possibly have a leaky gut? Hope you can find a holistic doc near your are. Perhaps they can help you too!

I really hope some of these things can help you and do not get discouraged. Be positive and stay hopeful!:surprised:

@Zurib19 its understandable if you have a routine or a tested brand/ product which has helped you personally and you want to help others by sharing info about it, but I'm just worried because there are a lot of people online who target just the kind of naïve and emotionally vulnerable people as the ones searching for acne cures on here. They end up spending so much money on something that isnt worth the price (such as the acne.org regimen or skin salvation imho) when they could find better, simpler treatments if they bothered to do some proper independent research. No doubt the acne.org regimen and other pricey treatments might have genuinely helped some users with their acne, however, with products such as these it is often not as much about helping rid people of acne as it is about making $$profit.. tip for anyone wanting to get clear skin - research research research, dont be fooled by flashy or expensive brands promising you clear skin in weeks, i know its tempting but it simply does not work like that (for most of us). The main ingredient used in the acne.org regimen is benzoyl peroxide which is available for far cheaper everywhere and does not need to be used as part of a lenghty and complicated routine in order to work. Same with the main ingredient in accutane which is available as a topical (tretinoin) which can be ordered online and is better if you have a mild form of acne as well as treating other skin imperfections.

Thank you so much for replying, it means a lot! I'm using a natural soap that has argan oil in it, and it's chemical free, and the jojoba oil is also super recommended for people who has oily skin like me because It's not comedogenic and it leaves your face super soft. I haven't tried the acne.org treatment yet because I think it's very harsh on the skin and my face it's very sensitive and gets irritated with everything. I think my acne cause is probably my digestive system, because I've been celiac since I was born, and my gut and intestines are not very good... and I took a huge amount of antibiotics (because of the acne treatments) and I think that made my gut worse than it actually is, that's why I'm taking probiotics now.I used to eat A LOT of greasy foods, I would eat 5 pizzas in a week, and pasta almost everyday, chocolates, cakes, cookies, chips etc, but everyone told me that diet had nothing to do with acne so I didn't know what was the problem. So that's why I decided to eat clean, but when I first started eating clean, my face was at its worst, my acne got worse and worse every single day and that made me feel devastated, because everyone were clearing their face but me. I thought it was detoxification, but now, 4 months later, I don't see any improvement, somedays my skin is better, and the other day it's worse...So I don't know what's going on...

I was thinking about taking zinc supplements, and maybe I will try them, but I'm a little scared about the fish oil, because some people say that they cured their acne with it, but other people say that it made them break out a lot, so I don't know if I should take it

I haven't tried the ice thing, so I will give it a try tonight to see if it works for me! :)

I'm also drinking herbs to help detoxify toxins. I wish there was a doc who can help me, but every single one of them tells me: "Diet has nothing to do with acne, your acne is normal because of puberty, get over it, you will be fine." And that makes me so angry!! They don't understand anything :| I'm interested on doing a candida cleanse, but I've never done that so I don't know how to do it, I will look for it and give it a try!

Thank you so much for your advice!!

I just wanted to share my own personal experience with others. I am also sharing things that can help other skin types such as icing. ICE is free lol If you are in this acne.org blog is probably because you may have tried their products. And if not is at least helped you find something. Like this blog. And yes, I understand that they make money out of what they sell but I'm glad they have this acne community which has helped me learn from other acne fighters as relate to them. I believe this forum can also serve as some type of research. But anyway. Hope your skin looks amazing! Adios! : )

No problem! No one better than you knows your own skin. And about your body detoxifying, it can even take you up to 4 more months! Just really try to eat clean. Your face may not be showing you much improvement yet, but as you get older your gut sure will thank you. Have faith and stay positive. Let me know how the icing goes. Also try some yummy teas during the day such as green tea, turmeric, chamomile, and arnica. All great with anti- inflammatory properties and anti-oxidants. Good Luck!! :surprised:

Hey! Here I am, almost 7 months later! It took me some time to get fully use to a clean diet, which does still need to be worked on more for sure. Since I do still treat myself every now and then :new_smiley_26: cause of my sweet tooth xD. And being on vacation definitely didn't help haha.
I just wanted to say your post was the the beginning of a push to motivation of pursuing a clean diet, life and acne-free existence. Within these 7 months I've tried so many things, it did start with eating cleaner, scrubs, even an antibiotic medication because I was so desperate to get rid of my acne. Yet i always found myself thinking back to this post. And It wasn't until 2 months ago I actually went full out on a healthy diet. However, I've got to say that nothing has helped as much as eating clean, and I saw noticeable results in weeks. But to even take it up a notch I went on a raw-food diet, in which I ate purely fruits & veges. It's definitely tough, but by making enjoyable salads and experimenting with my diet, It really grew on me. I do eat chicken or salmon at the odd rare time. But I mostly make smoothies (about 2-3 a day). This is probably the easiest and fastest way to being a healthy diet. And the best, since its digests quickly and greatly helps our vitality. Now my skin isn't perfect, and I've only been on this diet for a couple months. But considering how almost a year ago I found myself depressed when looking at the mirror, and now I am able to see a path to the clear skin that I've always wanted is amazing!!!! Anyhow, down to the point. I just wanted to let you know that you really did help me, you gave me the push I needed, and I THANK YOU FOR IT! :new_smiley_23::new_smiley_23:

Today I am still a client of Skin Salvation.

Guys, don't fall for 'her' scam. The main message is in red above (I've deleted the rest of the text so that it stands out). Be prudent in what you read.
