hi everyone

I am about to come off my course of roaccutane which has worked wonders for my acne but now I have tons of really large pores that almost look like icepick scarring. It's strange because my acne was all over my chin and forhead and hardly ever had any on my cheeks so I'm not sure why it is my cheeks that have been left scarred.

These photos don't really show how bad it is to be honest but it is VERY noticeable! And I'm not just being paranoid lol I've asked a couple of very close friends to be totally honest with my and they have said it's noticeable but obviously do the kind-friend thing and tell me not to worry about it..but it is making me feel pretty low. Strangely since the weather has started to become a bit hotter it has improved..it was WAY worse in winter but I would still love to get it sorted if possible. Does anyone think IPL or fraxel could help and if not then anything else maybe?

Thanks in advance for all your help :)

ps sorry for so many pics I just want to show in as much detail as possible because it's so hard not seeing it in natural light

IPL should probably help the redness, which in itself makes the dents less noticeable. Please do a lot of research on IPL and pick someone with experience, I've seen a lot of people sustaining serious damage from it.

Also, your acne scars are very mild, even if you don't believe it. I can assure you that most people won't even notice that little scarring.

You can try derma rolling. I think that will probably help your skin, but probably not the redness so much.

I would give it some time after you come off accutane. My skin was like this a couple of years ago and it was mainly cause my dryness and irritattion. Once my skin balanced out and became more hydrated my pores pretty much vanished, when your skin is irritated they are way more visible. Your skin does look irritate and it probably the dryness from the accutane, give things time to settle down, keep your skin moisturised and see how things are in six months. I wouldnt go near laser, especially not with your skin tone, you have a lovely complexion.

thanks so much gkitten5 thats really encouraging. the thing is though my skin was like this before accutane anyway- i am only on a low nose (20mg, highest I Was on was 30mg) because my acne was never THAT severe but my skin has looked like this since my late teens (I'm now 23). Even before the crazy dryness from accutane but I really really hope it will settle and balance out as you say.

Can I ask what you used to hydrate your skin? also did you use foundations etc specficailly for dry skin?

also i've been told so many times that pores are determined by genetics and won't change at all which is pretty horrible to hear! :(

Hey

I read all that too about pores, but from my experience, when my skin was dry they were 100x more visible, I thought this was it and that they would never shrink or go away but honestly once my skin balanced out the texture of my skin and visible pores reduced dramatically. I think when your skin is hydrated it almost plumps up your skin and your pores don't seem so open, it was almost like mine were desperate for some moisture.

For me it was about a 6/9 months progress to get my skin on the road to recovery. I was prescribed birth control and differin as a topical. I took my skincare right back to basics and I only used a cream cleanser to wash my face, I would massage the cleanser in and then dampen my face and wipe off with a tissue, I would repeat this if I wearing heavy make up or would dampen a wash cloth with warm water and use this to rinse as it gets rid of almost all my make up in one go. If you're in the UK, I like boots no 7 gentle cream cleanser for normal/dry skin. I've not washed my face with anything that foams for about two years. Once or twice a week I would use a exfoliator with aha, I use priori gentle aha cleanser it is a liquid with no beads in it and it doesn't foam either, just massage it on then wipe off. For moisturiser I just stuck to E45 at night after I cleanser or olay regenerist spf30 for during the day. I also like to cleanse and mosturise my face before I take a shower or bath as I find the moisturiser helps to lock in moisture in my skin as the steam from the bath or shower can b dry your skin out.

I changed about my foundations a lot back then. One that I always kind of come back to is estee lauder double wear light. I just find it gives me goo coverage and if your moisturise well enough before then it gives a nice matt finish without looking too cakey. I also liked using borjois health mix foundation as well but found the coverage wasn't as great, but I think you might like that one as your really do have a nice complexion and not much to conceal at all, it gives a nice finish. I also like jane iredale mineral pressed powder, it never breaks me out and gives good coverage even on its own.

I really wouldn't do anything harsh to your skin like lasers, even people with severe scaring have seen minimal improvement and some have been left with lasting damaged. I honestly think your skin looks great and will just get better with time.

WinterBlues-I've got the same problem! I have been on Accutane for 5 months (60mg per day). And nowskin has a bad the orange peel texture, enlarged pores all over my face ( I didn't have open pores before) and a lot of tiny scares. Also my acne hasn't improved. It looks much worse actually. I look like an old lady whereas I had pretty skin before treatment (I had just a few pimples because of hormone imbalance I think).

You posted these pictures a year ago. Are there any improvements? Did you get rid of this texture and became smooth again?

hi all.

unfortunately my skin still looks very similar (if you look at my latest posts you'll see.) the redness has gone down slightly, but I still get terrible flushing which I never had before I took accutane. With certain food, drinks, change in temperature etc I go bright red. but all of the tiny holes are still there and I get mixed responses as to whether they are pores or tiny scars which is frustrating. Am seeing another dermatologist as the one I was originally with who put me on roaccutane is quite dismissive of me now. I think she basically thinks "well the acne has gone so you should be happy" and thinks I am being vein and fussy over the scars left behind and the redness. So I am seeing a private derm in london who specialises in scarring and rosacea.

Yea all derms can see is skin cancer and acne and anything more than that is "not their problem"

cant believe these people go to school for so many years and go through the same exhaustive process as many much more difficult medical professions, only to address Two conditions..sometimes of which they find no solution..the hell!?

that's why the derm field is so competitive...it's an easy job with lots of pay and everyone wants in
