Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum. I have a 4 year old who has been very prone to a few spots on her chin since about age 2, but it has really flared up over the last few months and is so much worse now. We've been taking her to the gp since it began aged 2 and she was given various creams including Fucidin, fucidin H, rosex (as at one point they thought she had rosacea), bactroban... All with no success. We see a paediatrician as she had a few unrelated health problems as a baby, but she has been on inhalers (with spacer and rubber mask attachment) since 15 months old as she suffers from asthmatic type chesty coughs due to her previous illness. Anyway the paediatrician says it's acne but as yet we haven't found the cause. We've started reducing her steroid inhaler dose as I felt that it may have been due to the medication, but since gradually reducing it almost a month ago we've noticed no difference, in fact I think it's worse.

The doctor says see how it goes after the summer and if it's still there after her inhaler has stopped then he would be questioning her immunity or a hormonal imbalance and would need bloods etc done. She had a test to rule out diabetes and has had swabs taken from the sites of the spots and her nose too but each swab was negative.

Just wondering if anyone else has any experience of a child this young with acne, and what was done about it? I feel we're getting no answers and she's already got scars from it :-(

Thanks.post-390079-0-85976700-1397497198.jpg

Remove dairy and gluten from her diet. I've never heard of a child so young having acne, I can't imagine it's her hormones. I would think it's something in her diet that she's reacting to. Remove those two for at least 1-3 months and see if it improves. Do NOT replace milk with soy milk, try almond or coconut milk instead. If its not one of those two, try removing foods one at a time to see if that's the culprit, but gluten and dairy are most common. By the way, gluten is in SO many foods so check labels

look at what youre feeding her daily and start taking those away one by one to see what is causing it

First, I'm so sorry you are going through this. I always find it's easier to cope with my own issues than my kid having issues.

Acne at this age is very rare, so you might have a hard time finding info about it.

I think you are right to suspect the steroids. Another thing you might wonder about is the rubber mask she uses - does it touch her face in these areas? Is it made out of rubber or some type of vinyl or latex? Latex allergies are more common that you'd think.

It may be that it will take a while for her body to readjust after you start cutting down on her meds, so I would wait and see on that as your doc advised. If all this fails, you may have to look into finding a specialist in childhood skin disorders.

Best of luck.

have you already tried antibiotics?? if none of them worked def go see a dermatolgist, maybe even accutane? but accutane can be pretty severe and i dont know if the little kid could handle it, however atleast she will be acne free for the rest of her life?

It has to be some sort of reaction to the food she intakes.

Try to figure that out.

Such a pretty kid.

God bless her :)

Maybe she is allergic to something, my niece had that same type of rash, look into what your feeding her and see what is it that triggers it

I agree. It looks like a reaction to either the rubber mask, the steroids, or something in her diet/ environment. Since she has asthma, I highly recommend you check her histamine levels through blood testing and try a low histamine diet for a week to see if the redness gets better. Based on the photo, it looks like a histamine reaction to me, not typical baby acne.

PS. your daughter is gorgeous! Don't ever let her feel like her acne is a flaw, try not to draw attention to it in front of her.

Get her a food allergy test. At so young age it is not hormonal problem. She is allergic to smth she eats or comes in contact with

The only kid under 10 I've ever seen with acne (there were none when I was growing up, none of my friends, classmates or siblings had it) is my "new" little sister, who is 7 and has had it since she was a baby because my stepmom washes her face with acne cleanser. Stop washing your child's face! Srsly.

It's probably something in her diet. please keep us updated when you find out what causes it
