Woods-Fildes theory

Recommended Posts

The most widely accepted mechanism of action of sulfonamides for acne treatment is the Woods-Fildes theory which is based on the fact that sulfonamides act as competitive antagonists to para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), an essential component for acne bacterial growth.

The mode of action of sulfur in the treatment of acne is reported to include inhibiting the growth of P. acnes (the bacteria that typcially causes acne) and the formation of free fatty acids.

Sulfur acts as a keratolytic agent.

Unfortunately the Sodium Sulfacetamide based treatments like Klaron and Plexion are not available on prescription in Australia.

If any you find a way of getting them here in OZ, please let me know.
