Apples Give Me Cystic Acne

Hi Guys,

just wanted to share my finding with you. I'm now 100% sure apples give me cystic acne.

I had a big hunch previously but I wanted to test my hypothesis yesterday (also my mom had baked a delicious apple crumb pie). Surprise surprise, this morning I woke up with a big, fat, early stage cyst on my forehead. Now, I'm absolutely not saying apples are bad for you. Alls I want to share is that you might be sensitive to certain foods.

I wasn't aware of my sensitivity to apples till about 1.5 yrs ago. In my early 20s I used to have acne all over my face and back which I tried to combat with a healthy diet that included at least one apple a day. I thought this sh*t was supposed to be good for me. Well, it might be good for most people out there but for me this meant the worst cystic acne of my life (and it even left some scarring). I NEVER would've thought of it being caused by my daily apple.

Fast forward 6 years and I'm 99% free of cysts. The last one on my face was over half a year ago (also apple-induced) and went away in a couple of days.

Again, this is not a plead for the global annihilation of apples, it's just to inform you that IF you're suffering from cystic acne it COULD BE caused by certain foods. So it might be fruitful (pun intended) to systematically exclude food from your diet and keep a log on how your face/body responds. Or increase the intake of certain foods you already eat regularly and see if that worsens your skin.

I'm really glad I finally found what caused my cysts but I am kinda sad I didn't know this earlier. But then again, I could've gone through the rest of my life blaming my cysts on genetics. I'm never eating apples again, even if that means on turning down some delicious apple crumb pie..

Peace and love

Im glad you found out what food triggers your cystic acne. :) For me, it's oranges and mandarins. If I consume either one, a couple of days later I will get at least one cystic acne.

Sure it wasn't the crumble topping? Or the sugar?

Maybe you need to test your hypothesis with a pure apple. Apples are on of the healthiest things you could possibly eat, in moderation of course.

I'm not saying that's the case, but based on an apple crumble, I'd say you need further testing!

Very interesting.

Op do you know if it is just apples or any other fruits as well?

Do Apples and any other fruit affect your digestion at all?

Could be some kind of fructose intolerance leading to malabsorption etc but if this was the case you would think other fruits would be a problem as well. Might be something to do with pectin etc. Might just be a straight up immunological reaction type thingy.

I don't think i am particularly great with apples and some fruit either.

People need to understand that there is no 100% healthy food, our knowledge of nutrition just isn't strong enough yet.

There is no one fits all diet either.

The World's most "healthiest" food is probably fruit yes, as it is the one type of food that actually evolved to be eaten and yet it appears as if some humans may have developed sensitivity and intolerance to it as their ancestors moved to areas where there was less fruit so they ate less. Just in the same way that some humans have adapted to eating Dairy and grains.

I'm absolutely sure these do not give me cysts. I can eat sugar, wheat, eggs and butter in any form of preparation out there. Actually, my diet right now is just to avoid eating anything that contains apples. I can eat junk food all I want, and I might get some pimples but as soon as I eat anything that contains an apple I get painful cysts. Enough evidence for me to never touch an apple again.

I DON'T have any reaction to topical ACV however, I can smear that stuff all over my face and nothing bad happens.

I only noticed this strong effect with apples, however, I have a slight suspicion that my body doesn't really like olives either. I need to test this more elaborately though. If I find any correlations I'll let this forum know.

I haven't noticed any digestive issues when I eat apples.

I eat pretty healthy, and try to include at least 2 pieces of fruit a day but they don't seem to have these negative effects. What I notice is that the skin around my cyst is really swollen and irritated.

Just goes to show that you can be intolerant to anything, even something few people are allergic to like apples.

My citrus story is similar, I was eating a small orange a day believing they old help my skin.

Apples are always hard on my stomach - my having stomach issues and acne go hand in hand. I would find it extremely strange if I had just a skin reaction to a food but not an internal reaction...

The human body is the strangest, most unique thing. Everyone has to be so damn different.. >_<

When I changed my diet to where it is now, I didn't eat a lot of apples. Now I eat them all the time, and they make me feel great :). Everyone is different, and I'm happy to know that you found a highly possible food trigger. Be sure to wait several weeks for your current acne to run it's course before you make any more decisions.

I have a sensitivity to apples... my town has an apple festival each year that 20,000+ come to..... i live a half mile to two orchards.... and i cant have a damn apple.. like really? anyways enough with me complaining- i went to a allergist to find some of my triggers which was everything that i love sadly. Citrus fruits were bad, dairy, eggs, soy, almonds, oats (baddd), yeast (the baking kind -_-), and many other things. yikes

Most of those are make up the list of the most common allergens. But the apples and I think the oats are usually considered hypo-allergenic because few people are intolerant to them. So, you could follow a very hypo-allergenic diet and still be consuming something you are allergic to.

Hey Avada, what allergy test did you get done??

I have seen my allergist a few times (I have THE worst hay fever and a few other allergies) but he didn't do much for foods - I had to beg him for a test with grains and stuff.

Did you test your blood? Sorry if I'm asking too many questions.. I would rather get a legitimate test than have to question every food that goes into my body (I feel like I'm starving myself some days).

Hi! Well i originally went because i noticed a tie to citrus fruits and oats and my health and complexion (which also was effected from ingesting these foods) So i decided to go see a allergist specialist. Okay so this is a toughy to explain. How they tested me was they took the inside part of my boney arm.- they had this plastic thing that had rows of almost point parts (think of an upside down ice cube tray except with a not very sharpened point at the end. Okay- those points were all in this container that fitted to it that had like citrus, oats, dog, cat whatever i was getting tested for in liquid form (if that makes sense) and they took it and kind of poked my arm with it (not puncturing the skin) and made a grid of what i was being tested (she also sharpied on my arm to map out what was what) okay next i had to wait like 25 mins or so for everything to seep into my skin. and after she came over and looked at the grid on my arm and marked on a sheet of paper which things reacted with my skin. Which honestly if i wrote everything it would bore you. I was so shocked with the amount of things that im sensitive to. Its really good to get this done for foods- because not only did these triggers - trigger my rosacea and also acne spots- it made me almost tired and draggy throughout the day. yeah i hope this made sense.... if not go to your allergist and ask. :)

Yes, that's the exact test they did for me! Thanks for being so thorough! But did you do a full panel of tests? They just did the "normal" set for me.. I would love to see if any foods react negatively for me.. I have a lot of allergies to plants so I would assume I would have food allergies as well. Just, in a different form.. like you, acne.

Well i did a couple food categories + some plants and weeds.... i have horrible seasonal allergies . right now im half passed out from allergy meds + plus being all dry and stuffy from accutane. ahh The allergies get to me the most when im plopped at school which is 350 miles away from my home where nature doesn't give me troubles. Also i got tested for like animal- like i knew i was allergic to cats badly- but when a bit of dog came up too in my test i was pretty shocked because my little clifford doesnt bother me at all. anyways they also tested me for horse hair (odd) i know. But its a longg story but back like a yr ago i used bare minerals yaddie yaddie yadda- anyways i always got bumps on my forhead that itched like (like an itch) and i knew it couldnt have been the product... but guess what! the bare minerals brushes are made of horse hair! something so obvious was bothering me but i couldnt really connect the dots correctly. thats why i only use synthetic brushes because all natural ones risk allergies. sadly.

Yes go to your allergist to get foods done like ones you eat (you dont need everything that grows in the jungle). It really is worth it because it really gets you educated on your personal body. Where your born- its just you- a guide book to your life doesnt come with you (sadly) so doing this really gets to know yourself. Also if you have a cat or something and are allergic to cats- you can get allergy shots every few weeks to suppress that allergy which helps but i dont do that because i dont have one.... okay i lied- i had a cat. it walked into our house 9 yrs ago and we decided to take it in- me being like 9 i thought it was cute. But ohh baby this cat did not like me. Decided one morning it wanted to assault me whilst playing mario cart. then we had to let it go. Now i have my baby clifford (who i havnt seen in a couple weeks because of university) wahhh anyways getting off topic- good luck!

Awwwwww, yeah I love my cats! My dog is another story.. Haha but I'm allergic to all of them too sadly! But it really only aggravates me during the fall (yay now)!

I feel you on being hopped up on the allergy meds and all that fun stuff. But have you noticed when your allergies are really bad that your skin is super clear sometimes? I have that from time to time. O_O

I'll be checking up on all the daily exposure type allergens and see where I can go from there! Sucks that my last allergist was so rude and very, VERY useless lol. I'll be sure to find someone wonderful for this oh so wonderful task.

1)You need to get a test that looks for other responses besides the IgE antibodies involved in the immediate responses that are all most tests and allergists are concerned with. Acne, fatigue, headache, and all kinds of mystery ailments are due to delayed type responses involving other anti bodies or inflammatory responses. And your average doctor isn't going to be interested.

2) you can increase your consumption of natural anti histamine.

Right, I think most people wouldn't benefit from such an allergy test. I have terrible (and visible) allergies constantly.. my skin is slightly pink/flush at all times and it is triggered even further by heat or other allergens. It only started last year around the time I started cutting out gluten, strangely enough. I've tried to pinpoint exactly what causes it and it really only drives me more mad to play detective. Some can get intolerance testing, but that isn't 100% and can be very costly.

You're right on the money when you say the average doctor isn't going to be interested. Particularly any specialty doctors, they'll just send you around the Earth and back to other specialty doctors and waste your time. The best way to test for intolerances is to do an elimination diet along with a food diary of course. But I think most of the folks on here need a doctor's help with that - because you need to realize it takes time to add all of the foods back in. I am by no means any exception, and often find myself drawing all the wrong conclusions backed up by seemingly logical information.

For now I just stay away from the 3 big food no-nos: sugar, dairy, and wheat.
