Mustard Oil?

anybody with any opinion on mustard oil?

could this be considered healthy fat?

p.s i mean the genuine mustard oil that one gets from grinding mustard seeds, without any adulteration.

We don't have that here. Usually seed oils are PUFAs which are prone to rancidity and not suitable for high heat cooking. But you'll have to look that up. Is it something you use sparingly?

Mustard oil used to be the main cooking oil in older times.even about 25 years ago.

but now it's used less in most households, instead people use refined oils like soyabean oil, sunflower oil, very recently started with rice-bran oil, etc.

i've heard my grandmum say it's good but i am not unsure.

It might be high in antioxidants and they might inhibit the oxidation.

Mustard oil? I don't know why it would be. And your links says that it is pretty low in PUFAs. Looks like it's a good oil for cooking. Does it have a strong mustard flavor?

yes, it has.

ideally it should have that strong mustard flavour, strong enough to over-power many modest food items.

infact its distinct flavour goes well with rich dishes like steamed hilsa(in mustard paste) & other fishes/veggies & meat.

although my mum says now a days that strength(in most brands) is way less that what it used to be.

i suppose its adulteration is many products.

there's a couple of brands which promises the oil will be pure & will probably make one cry!lol!

some acid present which is shown to have negative effect on rats.not tested on human yet.

but thats the reason an article stated it's banned in the US as edible oil.

there's a man who's lived in the US and disagrees with that part though.

as far as i know , my relatives say its available in most indian stores.
