title.

i have had mild persistent acne since my first year of high school. Proactive worked, but only for 3 months.

lately ive dealt with over-exfoliation and small bumps all over my face. i really don't even know what to do anymore, and i feel like if i see a dermatologist once. even just ONCE, a large weight will be lifted from my shoulders.

I know how hard it can be to talk to people about your acne or open up about it - even to parents. But just try and be direct with it and tell them what you've just said here - tell them that your acne / skin is bothering you and you'd like to speak to a dermatologist to see what they suggest because you think it would really help you.

I find most parents that I read about on this forum are so stuborn. They always act like.. It will go away..... Its barely noticeable....Leave it alone.... Derms are a waste of money... ect...............

I know this from personal experience. I had to argue with my mom to take me to a derm over and over. The only way I could prove to her how much acne has hurt me was to actually cry. I'm freshly out of Highschool and I lift heavy weights as a body builder Male and I had to cry to prove a point. I'm not even one to cry if I get hurt badly like when I messed up my shoulder real bad. It takes a LOT, but this had its toll on me. Parents will respond to you if you can truly prove it to them.

Your parents should have taken you to a dermatologist immediately after your acne first began! what the Hell? You shouldn't even have to ask them, they should have already taken you to one.

I remember being annoyed with my mum for making it seem like she didn't want to take me to a derm. One time I asked she just went on about it being expensive and that you can't get in quickly because there are waiting lists or something. It made me feel like she didn't care about me or how my skin made me feel. Though I wouldn't expect her to know how my acne made me feel because it's not something I talk about. She did take me to a GP and I continue to see this GP every now and then about my acne. I've never actually been to a derm. At the moment I don't feel the need to because the regimen is working well for me but if I ever decided to do something more for my skin or wanted accutane then I'd ask for a referral to a derm.

So even if you can't get to a derm straight away, ask to see your regular doctor to speak about your skin. They can still help and offer advice until you can get to the specialist.

Ask them! If my daughter asked to see a physician of any kind for any reason, I would take her ASAP. This is about the health of your child.

Yep thats how it was kinda for me. When My mom refused to take me and said it was expensive, I felt like she really didn't care at all about me and I was just so mad.... Ugh.. I don't even want to think about it. Parents are just sooo.... Unaware... Like i said before, u don't know anything about acne unless you had to suffer through it.

It's funny because my experience was completely different to this with my parents. They actually WANTED me to go to a derm, and I didn't want to go because I thought he couldn't do anything. I was very wrong. I only got clear after seeing him.

It's strange to think how different their reaction was though, especially since neither had acne before (a few spots as teens, maybe). They reassured me that my skin wasn't that bad and to stop messing with it and all the rest, but they wanted to get me help when they saw it bothering me too. Seeing the derm was covered by the NHS but I had to pay for my medication with a pre-payment card I got for my painkillers and Reynauds medication. I think in part it's because I had such low self confidence anyway, and they recognized the signs of that coming back. The derm was really great too, he'd been doing the job for years and years and had a focus on the emotional issues acne can bring. I got very lucky.
