Does Anybody Else's Friends/peers Keep Quiet About Your Skin?

I know quite a large amount of people on this site often bring up how others have made some cruel, vicious and insensitive comments about the condition of their skin but for me i don't really get this. In my school, I don't think I've ever heard the word Acne come out of someone else's mouth. I'm a guy and I know girls might be more likely to talk about their own or other people's skin but even though I've gone to school with some very obvious problems, people just don't really bring it up. Sure when I had really bad dermatitis on my face, I got the occasional comment but that isn't Acne. One time someone pointed out a large pimple on my face but that was just one pimple which anyone could get. I've never heard anyone say things to me or anyone else (when referring to acne) like "what happened to your face?" "your skin looks terrible?" "you look like shit" all of that sort of stuff, it's as if Acne doesn't exist in my school. Do other people have this or have a just landed in with a good crowd? Or maybe it's all said behind our backs?

Hey, I've also been one of the lucky ones, I haven't really had any harsh comments...but I live in the UK so maybe that's a factor? I have had my family make comments like 'wow you've been going at your face again' or 'you need to stop eating so much fatty food' but then they do always compliment me on a good skin day or if I've managed to conceal the mess!

My best friend always says she never notices my breakouts or scars. I honestly don't know if she is being truthful or not. She knows its a rough time for me... But I wish I knew if she was sugar coating things or not. Clear skinned folks seem to negate it and ignore it, but alas... I'm also 29 and hang with people my age and older. Maybe I'm the one who ought to start negating it. Maybe she is right... Maybe, it's not so bad.

Also! I'm glad no one is giving you grief over it!! That is a very good thing.

Usually it's my family who always try to give me advice and say "you should try this for your face...", "try to avoid this and that kinds of food". I'm lucky to have a great group of friends who never really say anything about my acne. When my skin is pretty bad, they don't think anything of it. When there are times my acne is mild they even compiment saying "you're skin looks good today, its really cleared up".

Love my friends!! :)

I've never really had anyone say something mean about my acne, either. Although I was lucky enough to have clear skin throughout high school. I didn't get my acne until I was an adult.

I have been treated cruelly by other adults because of my acne but never direct words. Just mean stares, looks of disgust, etc.

Wish this was true about the area, I am originally from UK and have encountered so many assholes who took great pleasure in making me feel like shit about my skin.

By the way, the comments made to you by your family may have been out of concern, however their advice is very inaccurate. Acne is not caused by poor diet, I thought that was well known now - not sure about others on here but I eat really well and my skin has been awful since I was 11 years old, yet most people I know have flawless skin yet abuse their bodies so how do you explain that?! So don't feel guilty for occasionally indulging in what you fancy.

But brilliant that there are people out there who do not get bullied about their skin :)

I don't really get any comments from others either, they just know it's their and I deal with my own stuff. I got a a huge high school, so theirs actually alot of acne sufferers. I've always been the type that just got along with everyone, so I guess the treat people how you want to be treated thing works also.

The friends that I had at school never used to refer to my acne at all in my presence. However one day I found out that when I wasn`t around, they referred to me as "spotty". In some ways that was even worse than the verbal and physical bullying that I suffered from later on as I thought I could trust them.

Yeah, most of my friends keep quiet about it, sometimes they would compliment me, saying my skin is glowing or even that they don't even think my acne is bad (if I mention it). I always wonder to myself do they keep quiet about it because it's not that bad or maybe it really is, because they don't want to hurt my feelings...I've had one friend though who used to subtly mention my acne by making me try a face wash at a store. Other times, she would downright joke about it.

I consider myself blessed .I have friends who support me and never criticize me for my acne. When acne is at it's worse they just ignore it.on the other hand if i'm all cleared up and acne is calm ,they say things like "Josh has cleared up,just a few scars here and there ,never mind they will heal". It helps so much!

Ah it's crap I know I have had people make comments (mostly out of concern) and they make me feel like shit too but only because I'm really sensitive about my skin...god forbid someone actually said something hurtful I think I'd have to smack em! lol yeah I know, for me diet doesn't affect my skin but try telling that to them, ignorance is bliss I guess

That's probably one of the main reasons that acne is so difficult to cope with - other people's ignorance and feeling like you're always having to justify yourself. I constantly had to deal with perpetual remarks about my diet, make up etc from my previous circle, now I am married to a lovely guy from across the pond but it's meant having to get to know a whole new crowd, past bullying has made me so nervous in social situations. I constantly worry what others may or may not be thinking about my skin. I eat very well and spend a fortune on fruit, veg and other good food so it would really hurt me if my new friends and aquaintances thought it was my fault for having acne cos my diet must be bad. It's so offensive. My husband has reassured me that his crowd are smarter than that, and that most people actually are aware that acne is a hormonal and genetic thing. He wants me to put my trust in him and not be afraid of going out to socialise, it is very hard though. In my experience it does seem that the general public think acne is self inflicted, urgh. Hoping my hubby is right when he says his friends and family are different.

It's good that you have such an understanding husband :) always make you feel a little better knowing someone loves you and can see past your skin. I think in general most people will overlook it but there will always be someone looking to make other people feel bad because of their own insecurities so if it wasn't acne, it would be something else - but then who wants to have friends like that anyway!

I've found that (very generalised statement here!) the older generation tends to think it's somehow our fault for having acne - from experience it's usually been grandparents (whom I completely adore btw) that have made comments and offered suggestions...'in my day' is usually how the conversation goes, normally blaming it on diet, or make up or washing too little/ too much - basically they have no clue but think they have accumulated an all-emcompassing widsom because they are old lol the good thing is family/ friends usually say things out of love or concern so just have to take it with a pinch of salt...which is far easier said than done!

The people i talk to don't say anything skin related which i love. Unfortunately, some people i don't talk to much or at all have said some awful stuff to me loudly easy for others to hear. Feelsbadman

I've never really had friends comment on it. One time I overheard someone who I thought was my friend make a joke about it, back when my skin was really bad. But my closest friends have never said a word to me about it. Granted, my acne is most definitely mild now - I mostly just have problems with little whiteheads and hyperpigmentation. My friends have even complimented my skin before and one time thought I was wearing makeup when I wasn't wearing anything. It made me feel like a million bucks, haha.

Sometimes I wonder, too, if they just do this to be good friends. But I think if I really did have 'terrible' skin, they wouldn't just upright lie to my face. So having other people give me compliments reminds me to put my skin into perspective and acknowledge that it's not as bad as it seems.

I'm blessed to have good friends, none of them mentions my acne. I can still remember the day when one of my girl friends kissed me in the cheek despite me having a nasty skin.

I've got not so good comments from people that aren't my friends, but yeah my friends never mention it either.

I've only ever talked about it to my closest friends and they have always been supportive, I've always kept it to myself though mainly so I don't think they know how much it bothered me.

I found that people made comments both to your face and behind your back like that in middle school, by high school and college it stopped being interesting to talk about. The only time acne would come up was in private conversations, where a girl/guy would say...man I really like so-and-so, but I don't think I could make out with all those zits. That sort of thing. It wasn't a real mean jab, just a statement of fact...

Most gals at my school only comment about their own acne and not anyone else's. but usually they complain about having 1 or 2 tiny little bumps on their forehead, while i'm sitting there caked in makeup trying to hide my horrible breakouts. Sigh

You know, these days I just want everyone to tell me what is exactly wrong with me, how appealing I am, etc. These days people are just cowards, because they don't dare to say anything about how you look like while I desperately want that kind of feedback.

Ha, same here! My friend would be like "I'm breaking out" (with one tiny red dot no one can see) and I'm sitting there thinking " lol what's that on my face, then, an explosion field?"
