Hi Ice,

@tracy521 Thank you for the advice. In fact I was just looking at my dent under angled lighting (why do I do it to myself?!) and it's probably worse then just the noticeable dent,as I can see the difference in fat loss on that side as opposed to the other side especially when I smile. I have pretty chubby cheeks and a lot of fat around the apple of my cheeks and on my unaffected cheek it is really chubby and springy, but on my other side there is a definite loss of fat.  There is also a larger area of fat loss then I originally thought. Also I can feel the difference.

I would try and ride this out for another couple of months or so, but have a wedding which is abroad at the end of Christmas and I just wanted to look my best and instead I look my worst. But at the same time I don't want anymore needles anywhere near my face.

Is restylane better than Juverderm? Also do you know if it helps or hinders healing? Thank you.

@shadylee I don't know how to thank you! I just saw Tracy's email and responded to her.

I freaked out out last night - could not sleep, this thing was really worrying me as it just does not appear to be improving at all.

Today the angled lighting shows shows a definite loss of fat I had not realised was there.

So feeling quite rubbish and really I can't believe my luck - I know I know I should be grateful for all the things I have in my life etc which of course I am. I sound like such an ungrateful so and so but I get so freaked out with things on face.

Hope you are doing well?!

Hi Ice,
I completely understand what you're going through.  I can look in a mirror and cry my eyes out for hours, I can't stand having anything on my face.  Its so hard when you don't see improvement.  You don't sound ungrateful at all, its just so extremely hard emotionally.

I'm so happy Tracy messaged you.  She knows so much about the skin and procedures.  She has helped me through so many bad times with my skin, she's the best!  I'm sure she's going to help you find an answer!

do you have any pics before the injection to compare to? i only say that because i cant imagine one shot could have caused all that fat loss as well. can you post a pic here so i can see what you mean? or you can message me. i think at this point your best bet is not to look at it all the time because its only going to cause you to be more upset and that's no good.  if it is bothering you that much though go see a cosmetic derm or go to a plastic surgeon and see what they think. i think juvederm would probably work too its also made from hyaluronic acid too. it probably all depends on the size of the dent. an experienced derm or doctor will know exactly what to do. i dont think either of those fillers would hinder healing since they do help to stimulate collagen as well.
i wish you the best of luck.

@tracy521Thanks Tracy.  Happy to message you pictures rather than put on here. Do you have an email?

I just wish I had not got this done and been so complacent about it. It wasn't even bothering me that much, and now I have a massive crater. It isn't as bad as some pictures I have seen on realself or elsewhere but it feels really dented and perhaps tethered down from where the cyst popped out.  So instead of where I have read most people's spots/cysts went down or flattened out, mine was near the surface anyway (but over 2 months was not coming out) and then a gentle squeeze a few days later made the cyst come out. It was a very tiny little hard substance. Minuscule as I remember thinking, this tiny  thing was trapped unfer my skin for over 2 months.

I did not notice anything until 2 weeks later and even then it did not look like anything to worry about. Over a month later is when I believe I noticed the left side of my face with a dent and sunken cheek.

Nearly 5 months later, the atrophy/sunkenness has definitely improved but I have a very strong dent, like a dimple in that area.

With any pictures I send, you will think it's not as bad as some you have seen but for me I just feel devastated and like it's going to be something permanent as the dent may be tethered down.  I have many acne scars but there are small and flat. But this dent is something I have not had or seen before. It is also by feel that you get a good sense of the dips and loss of fat. I can put the pad of my finger on the dent and it feels like the core of the dent i.e. Where the cyst came out is really deep and even when I stretch it out I can feel it. The atrophy definitely goes above the dent and more higher up the cheek but this again i notice more by touch as there is a definite shallowness whereas my other cheek is plump with no dips or shallow areas - from what  I  can tell anyway. Oh I also have discolouration and the skin is very thin in that area.

i am loathe to get fillers and this will be a last resort.  I just want this to go away but I havs a sense with the scar formation that it might be permanent. Any ideas?

Pleas do let me know how I let you see the picture. Thank you once again.

@tracy521 Hi Tracy sorry to hound you. I am just sick with worry about this. I am seeing my dermatologist next Friday and I know he will recommend filler but am loathe to at the moment but at the same time I hate this scar.

Sorry also did want to ask which fillers are the best in anyone's opinion? Restylne or Juverderm? I know that one of them can give a blue tinge effect?!

You can message me on here or at [email protected] - see what the derm says and go from there. I’ve never heard of filler leaving a blue tinge. I’ve had restylane it was easy and not really painful at all.

How deep do dermatologists put saline under the skin? Right under the skin or do they go deep? A few have said that the saline solution isnt the thing that really helps fill in the dents but the needle pricks, which stimulate collagen growth. Has anyone tried dermarolling? Instead of going to my dermatologist I may just do that at home instead. I've done it before for surgery scars and stretch marks and it has worked wonders. I'm not sure how saline solutions are administered but derm rollers have a bunch of needles per square inch so it may work even better.

Hi. I notice this topic is three years ago. It came up in a search. I have a BIG atrophy. But the worst thing is it is right in the center of my forehead. It was a cyst that was injected. I’m wondering how long it took yours to go away.

Had a really bad breakout a couple weeks ago and saw a dermatologist who gave meabout 7/8 cortisone injections which have now all become massive mishapen craters on my already scarred and broken out face. I know they should fill in in 4-6 months but damn. This is very traumatic any words of wisdom or encouragement or experiance? Help.

Can you update whether it filled in? I’m having this same problem!

Reviving this board (and others) because I'm really going through it!

After years of getting cortisone shots and probably close to 100 shots, I got the dreaded atrophy.

It happened when I went to someone other than my normal derm, for a HUGE cyst but he also hit another tiny pimple I had -- and I believed he used way too much for that tiny pimple.

Update:

I noticed the dent 10 days after the initial cortisone shot, and it continued to change and get slightly worse over the following week or two. I went to my regular derm who agreed to give me saline shots. She wouldn't give me filler because she told me it was not approved for this condition and I'd be doing it at my own risk, so I opted not to do it even though I was really desperate.

I did three weekly rounds of saline and took 1000mg of vitamin C daily.

I didn't have any side effects form the saline, no bruising, only swelling that went down in a few days.

After the second/third saline shot, the dent became qualitatively better. The area was kind of uneven and more sunken than normal, but there was no longer a dent. It is completely something I can live with -- NOTHING like the terrible sinkhole that was initially there.

Now I'll be good to wait for more healing over the next year. If this happens to you, try saline, it really worked for me.

I'm posting this in case anyone has that initial panic that I went through. I have pictures of my atrophy every step of the way which I'm happy to share if it would help anyone feel better.

I soooo wish you had updated :(

Yours looks to be a similar severity and size to mine, so it would be amazing to know how much improvement you saw and what you tried.

I just posted pics of mine in another forum, anyone interested can check them out.

I am going to the derm on July 6 to discuss options. I'm hoping for a saline injection and then if I see no improvement, (dissolvable) filler. Either way, I will try a full round of saline shots (5-9 times from what I've read here)

This heals naturally, but it takes a very long time (months). You can do two things. One is saline injections through your derm or get some filler which lasts a big longer but costs more.

Thanks for your response.

Yep, I know that's what I'm looking at. I'm going in a few days to show my derm, and she can hopefully help me with saline and/or filler.

I am definitely worried about doing filler (I've never done it before) and the possible outcomes. I've read this thread extensively, and I know that a few posters still found the area looked uneven even with filler!!

But I'm desperate at this point, for less depth. Even if the skin doesn't exactly right until 6 months or a year on (if ever!!), if I could just get the mostly dent filled I think I could live with that! I am no stranger to discoloration and small dents, I have them all over my face and I've accepted them. But a huge freaking dent right in plain sight just takes it over the edge for me.

I'm in the same boat as you except mine is red, and unfortunately on my cheek under my eye where everyone sees it when they look at me. I wish I had some advice or words of encouragement, but maybe you can take comfort in be fact that other people feel the same way.

Just wanted to follow up on this thread. Did your issues resolve? I just got a dent from cortisone atrophy right in the middle of my cheek under eye so I am hoping you can provide a positive update. Am so distressed :(

@sunnyside31 These heal by themselves, taking a year sometimes. Goto your dermatologist and have them do saline injections (cheap just water) or prp injections (overkill for one spot).  They can subcise using a tiny needle but cannot use filler or you could go blind as this is a vascular area (artery).

Man, I dunno why you people drag up these old posts from their graves, especially when the OP who sounded so dire never bothered to check again (she has 1 post to her credit).

Just wanted to follow up on this thread! Hoping your issue resolved. I am now experiencing the same issue on 2 different spots on my face. Any insight/advice/light at the end of the tunnel you could provide would be sooo much appreciated!
Thank you for your time!

I posted a few weeks ago on a different thread, I was really distressed as well. I went for three weekly saline shots and that got me to a place where I wasn't so depressed anymore. I still have some unevenness in the area but it no longer looks like a sinkhole on my face, so I can live with it and hope for more evening out over the months ahead. And even if it hardly improved from here, I'd still be able to live with it. I don't think about it anymore. Based on others' experiences here, I consider myself really lucky that this resolved quickly and didn't drag on and on.

Hopefully they have improved by now!! I have had several atrophy/ indent....I have one right now. It is super frustrating:( My worst healed in 3 months (to where it was unnoticeable, prob not 100%), the smaller ones were faster (1 month-ish). I supplement with collagen powder, vitamin C, and I've also gotten acupuncture around them. Hopefully yours are better!! It is such a slap in the face post injection!!!

Even worse the nurse was doing them. On the last injection two days later not where I was injected, but the skin right above it indented in. I am about to hit the two month mark and have no progress yet. Also, I have had three saline injections so far and still no improvement. I’m hoping at 4-6 months it will be totally filled in since there was not even a cyst there just being totally related to the steroid injection. Asking for success stories or anything that has been found to help. When have you seen the most healing occur? Anything else to try? Please tell me my skin will go back to normal!

Hey everyone,
A month ago I had a pimple injected on my forehead which I've done several times without any issues. This time however, I noticed a dent formed one week later. Thus, the divot has been there for three weeks now. It is pretty small so I know I shouldn't be too upset about it but regardless it is anoying (the pimple wasn't even that bad to begin with).  Anyway I have heard that the forehead is prone to divoting when it comes to these shots.  Has anyone else experienced this? Does your skin fill back up eventually or is this permanent ? :( .

PS  should mention that I am 25 and am not usually prone to acne scarring so I am hoping this means I have good collagen and I will be fine lol but I'm still concerned !
