hello friends!

i mean to start this post as an all-in-one thread for everyone who's interested in knowing what's good for our body, skin and mind.

i am talking about one aspect - food/diet.

we are going to mainly talk about food items that's good for us (in general).

and i believe we do it keeping the world blue planet in mind - that is, every part of the world!

not all eastern countries have the kind of food that the west world has and same goes for the friends from west.even if they are available, they aint common.

so,i request everyone to please do a lil' extra and mention any substitute or other varied options if possible.

for example : spinach <----> kale

salmon <-------> hilsa (am not very sure about this, but many state that they are similar)

same goes for veggies and fruits or meat.

turkey <------> chicken

also, kindly add the approximate quantity(per day) u think is optimum & atleast one positive trait or quality that makes them priceless to us.you can also give suggestions of swapping a particular item that we already take.

for example : limit potato(to may be one medium size a day) and instead add sweet potato

or

have green tea(with honey,if u cant have it plain) instead of light cofee or tea

or

raisins (if u aint intolerant) instead of candy/sweet/etc

I ALSO MEAN TO ADDRESS ANY MIXED OPINION ON SOME ITEMS.

for example garlic.here

** http://www.highonhealth.org/is-garlic-a-friend-or-foe-for-your-skin/ ** http://www.livestrong.com/article/443069-skin-benefits-from-garlic/

i start here,u can go on adding.

(i will keep editing as soon as i get ur response)

#garlic(atleast one clove a day..almost everyday) - anti-bacterial property and improves circulation (to be checked as mentioned above)

#spinach or kale (or any dark green leafy veggie namely - it's got anti-oxidant and also vit C,E,k, A etc

# capsicum or bell pepers(add it in curries or dishes u cook just as a veggie - so the amount( some are intolerant to night shade family members so please be careful) - most say green capsicum is the best for skin for it has anti-oxidants(less as compared to many other hyped items) and it's got all other good qualities of green chilli.

but i think all bell pepers are equally good.

#ginger(add it as seasoning in dishes/curries/some salad)- the skin is roughage.so even if u don't want to peel it it's alright.

** http://dietforclearskin.blogspot.in/2013/01/add-ginger-to-your-diet.html (our very own alternativista

#papaya(have pieces as a fruit or add it to ur fruit salad) - Extremely cleansing internally, and therefore helps clear up skin ailments. Rubbing partially ripe papayas on the skin softens and dissolves dead skin, repairs skin damage and wrinkles, lightens freckles, and clears the complexion. Avoid the eyes.

# cucumber (one day) - The silica and high water content help improve complexion, add a healthy glow, and hydrate the skin. Use juice or slices topically to treat sunburn, swelling, and dermatitis.

#extra virgin olive oil(two tablespoon a day - i'd like to add here that a nutritionist on a television show once said that acne-sufferers should limit oil intake, whichever oil it is,to not more than 2 tablespoon a day.i'm quite sure people have varied opinion but it's a general idea here that oily food means a trigger for acne.going by that logic i'd stick to '2 tbsps')

-

u can also use virgin olive oil.it's got 'n' number of benefits.endless!

#potato - this ones weird but i'm still going to add this for it's better side.if taken in right amount it can help u in many ways.

#turmeric powder- if u can't have it raw(which has it's side effects like yellowing of teeth) just add a pinch or two daily in ur dishes.

curry is a good example but even if u're not a curry person add it in dishes that u make for urself like sauteed veggies, etc.

#lemon(warm water with half a lemon in it in the morning OR lemon in food or homemade sherbet) - http://health-tipz.blogspot.in/2009/07/25-health-benefits-of-lemon.html

BUT I AM AGAINST APPLYING IT TOPICALLY TILL U'RE SURE.U MUST TEST FOR URSELF.

HERE,***

I hope you all your contribution for the 'greater good'!=p

thanks,

aana

damn!

i've haven't been here for what seems like ages.

here is a few more notes :

#LENTILS - they are protein.so if u have wheat/any grain/rice(any) or anything of high GI u can make dal(which like a lentil soup in india/bangladesh/pakistan etc)

(its great for vegetarians).it is likely to lower ur overall GI load.=)

i personally have half a bowl of dal in breakfast(with fruits),lunch(with rice,veggies,fish etc) and in dinner(with rice/wheat,veggies)

they also have a good amount of zinc which is important and helpful for acne sufferers.

#OKRA / LADIES FINGER/ BHINDI - It helps repair the gut.(courtesy : alternativista)

#VINING SPINACH / MALABAR SPINACH/ PUI SAK - again, this one like okra is mucilagenous and is repairing in nature(if thats what they call it).(courtesy : althernativista)

#PUMPKIN SEEDS - its got Zinc.helps with the oiliness and its said to help acne patients.

i urge everyone to put in any help u can.thank u again,

How do you make the dal to have with fruits. Are they just boiled with a little salt?

How do you make the dal to have with fruits. Are they just boiled with a little salt?

my mum makes dal just like its made in common household.

u know take some oil,add jeera(cumin seeds),garlic paste or finely chopped, slit green chillies(my mum uses dried red chillies most of the times), boiled dal(boiled with lil' salt(optional)), turmeric powder, chilli powder(if needed) and water.

let it boil for sometime.thats it.u can add coriander leaves at last if u want.

u can also add veggies of ur choice like some gourd or carrot for or tomato(for taste).

here,

http://www.thekitchn.com/recipe-very-simple-dal-palak-80763

did u try any of the vinning spinach recipes?

i have quite often now.

either sauteed with veggies(garlic, ginger, prawn etc) or as the chorchori recipe i had send a link of(with pumpkin, snake gourd, some sliced potato, etc)

more food items thats good for you :

# WHOLE GRAINS/WHEAT - ONLY AND ONLY IF U AINT INTOLERANT OR ALLERGIC TO GLUTEN.PLEASE TRY TRIAL AND ERROR METHOD BEFORE U INCLUDE IT(OR ANY OF THESE) IN UR DIET.

# CORIANDER LEAVES/CILANTRO LEAVES /CHINESE PARSLEY - Anti-bacterial properties: Coriander leaves contain anti-bacterial properties because of the alkenals and alkanals present in them. They destroy bacterial strains that are particularly harmful to humans.

To control acne, one can mix a spoonful of coriander juice along with a pinch of turmeric powder which can be applied on the face. This mixture is known to control not only acne but also blackheads and dry skin.

  • Supply of anti-oxidants: The amount of anti-oxidants found in coriander leaves is very high and they can ideally be added to food. They supply ample of anti-oxidants which can be very helpful on countering free radicals being developed inside our bodies.
  • Control of cholesterol: Coriander or dhania seeds are good for controlling cholesterol as well. Experiments revealed that LDL or VLDL cholesterol decreased due to intake of coriander seeds, while HDL which is known as good cholesterol had increased significantly.
  • Lowers diabetes: Studies on coriander showed that it caused blood glucose levels to decrease drastically while glucose getting converted into glycogen. 2-deoxyglucose transport and glucose oxidation increased to a great extent suggesting the use of coriander on a regular basis.
  • Diuretic properties: It is also useful in cleansing and detoxifying the urinary tract system. Being a diuretic also helps the kidneys to be clean as retained water is expelled by the diuretic stimulation.
  • Regulates Menstrual flow: Excessive menstrual flow can be checked by the intake of coriander seed water (i.e. water in which coriander seeds are boiled).

NOTE :

Indian coriander contains an essential oil which irritates the skin when left in contact for a long time.

The connection between the body and the mind is a very real one, with the way your body feels playing a big part in how your brain functions and whether or not you experience a state of well-being. Keeping it free of toxins, free radicals, and other nasty things that can end up in our insides is essential to maintaining a healthy life.Stuff like Artichokes, Asparagus, Avocados, Beets, Broccoli, Cabbage, Garlic, Ginger, Green Tea, Kale, Olive Oil, Seaweed,Watercress, Wheatgrass etc. go a really long way in making one's life long and healthy.

okay so,i'll be adding a few more food items that are good for ur skin and over-all health.

(please note : checking for intolerance is a must on any food item mentioned here or above.the whole concept is very subjective)

#WALNUTS - (NOTE : While walnuts are great for you, don't go too overboard on the snacking - they contain 183 calories per ounce!)

Walnuts offer up healthy Omega-3 fats that strengthen the membranes of your skin cells, locking in moisture and nutrients that keep it plump and glowing and keeping out toxins that can damage skin cells.

you can much on them whenever u r hungry but ideally they should be added to salads or in other wholesome dishes(as alternatives to other nuts or food u're intolerant to or find unhealthy)

#ALMONDS (AND OTHER NUTS) - a quarter-cup of almonds contains nearly half of your daily value of Vitamin E and manganese. Almonds also provide high levels of magnesium, riboflavin, tryptophan, copper and phosphorus. Almonds, like other nuts, are considered a healthy snack in moderation.

Almonds can help your acne by improving the condition of your skin. According to the Acne website, the Vitamin E contained in almonds helps guard your cells against free radicals. Pollution and harmful bacteria are examples of free radicals. Combined with the natural sebaceous oils produced from your pores, the combination can result in pimples, blackheads, and even white heads. Antioxidant-rich foods like almonds help keep free radicals at bay.

Theories/Speculation

Some people fear eating nuts like almonds, since they contain high levels of fat. However, the WH Foods website explains that almonds contain healthy monounsaturated fats which help promote weight loss, prevent weight gain, and help lower LDL cholesterol levels. There is also a misconception that fatty foods worsen your acne. Although almonds contain healthy fats, no fatty foods in general actually worsen your acne. The only exception is if the fat accidentally comes into contact with your skin externally. This may occur from grease spatters while frying foods.

Brazil nuts are rich in selenium, which increases skin elasticity and may decrease skin cancer, according to recent studies. The natural fatty acids and vitamin E present in Brazil nuts helps to hydrate the skin while allowing sebum, or oil, to have a better.

Pistachios naturally contain vitamins A, C and E as well as zinc and folic acid.pistachios' influence on insulin levels actually decreases the appearance of acne by controlling blood sugar that circulates the acne-causing hormone androgen. Blood sugar shifts, states the report, can produce excess oil and pimples. Adding pistachios to your diet, however, can help to regulate insulin levels to encourage healthy skin free of unsightly blemishes. The presence of the powerful antioxidants vitamins A, C and E as well as the antioxidant minerals of zinc and folic acid enhances the nuts natural proclivity to prevent acne by safeguarding the skin against free radical damage.

Cashews contain the minerals selenium and zinc helpful in eliminating acne, according to the Health Alternatives website. Selenium works as an antioxidant in conjunction with vitamin E, helping to reduce skin inflammation, hydrate the skin and reduce the appearance of scars. Zinc promotes the immune system, wound healing and cell growth helpful in renewing skin damaged by acne and associated infection.

i am personally feel that i am intolerant to peanuts(although i am not sure).

here is a food testing i'd started.let me know if u feel like taking the test,

here,

#This isn't really a food item as such but am surprised i never mentioned WATER - although i am sure everyone is well aware of how effective water is for clogged pores or blemishes.

Water helps clear the toxins that cause inflammation and blemishes. It also assists in transporting nutrients and oxygen to skin cells, and preventing dehydration, which can cause premature aging." It can even make skin appear fuller since the hyaluronic acid that naturally exists in skin will pull in and hold the water for a wrinkle-plumping effect.

Lack of water can lead to dehydration, a condition that occurs when you don't have enough water in your body to carry out normal functions. Even mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you tired.

Everyone has heard the advice, "Drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day." That's about 1.9 liters, which isn't that different from the Institute of Medicine recommendations (- The Institute of Medicine determined that an adequate intake (AI) for men is roughly 3 liters (about 13 cups) of total beverages a day. The AI for women is 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) of total beverages a day.) Although the "8 by 8" rule isn't supported by hard evidence, it remains popular because it's easy to remember. Just keep in mind that the rule should be reframed as: "Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of fluid a day," because all fluids count toward the daily total.i personally follow the rule which says 'have 1 litres water of 20 kg of ur body weight.'

that is if u're 60kgs,u r to have at least 3 litres of water and so on.

#WATERMELON - Adding a lycopene-rich food, such as this juicy pink treat, "helps reduce damage and redness caused from sun exposure, prevents future wrinkling and possibly even lowers skin cancer risk.

Aim for one cup each day by tossing it in salads, salsas, and smoothies. Or try her recipe for refreshing ice cubes: Puree watermelon, sweeten with concentrated apple juice, pour into an ice tray, and freeze.

Frankly any foods that are high in fibre and foods that are high in protein are always good for the mind, body and skin. Things like chicken, turkey, different colored fruits and veggies are all great for human beings of any age.

one more addition to the above list :

#CHICKEN LIVER - (PLEASE NOTE : be careful about overdose of vitamin A which is present in extremely high amount.

it's a no-no for pregnant women for the same reason)

(i personally DO NOT like or support consumption of any form of liver including chicken liver RAW)

here are some links on and about chicken liver :

http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2013/mar/02/good-for-you-chicken-livers

http://healthyeating.sfgate.com/chicken-livers-healthy-eating-1904.html

http://www.livestrong.com/article/323726-nutrition-of-chicken-liver/

http://www.fatsecret.com/calories-nutrition/usda/chicken-liver

so it has zinc,iron,vitamins(B12 SPECIALLY) and also others like vit C.plus vitamin A(when consumed in right amount and in right frequency).

so,i can firmly state that its very good for acne.

its high protein, low sodium, and low fat too.

words of caution :

be careful about the amount of cholestrol and vitamin A contained in it.

I love eating protein rich food.Because i have a feeling it helps my acne for sure.I don't know if what i'm saying is scientific or whether it's documented but i have blind faith in my instincts. On days when i eat a lot of carbohydrates i can feel my skin becoming itchy and inflammatory. So eating a carbohydrate rich food is a no-no for me.So i stick with 12 egg whites a day (LOL i know),chicken breast, shrimps tongue.png

Aana,i've read rice is bad for acne.I took the fact with a grain of salt but there might be a bit of truth in it.Considering the fact that rice is holy grail for people living in your part of the world why not switch to brown rice? I mean there are various benefits of eating it with low GI index and its richness in selenium and manganese among them.

more food items thats good for you :

# WHOLE GRAINS/WHEAT - ONLY AND ONLY IF U AINT INTOLERANT OR ALLERGIC TO GLUTEN.PLEASE TRY TRIAL AND ERROR METHOD BEFORE U INCLUDE IT(OR ANY OF THESE) IN UR DIET.

I wouldn't put include grains as a whole. There are a few grains and grain-like seeds for which the benefits probably outweigh the negatives. Like Oats, Buckwheat and Quinoa.

i stick with 12 egg whites a day .

Too bad you are half a world away, otherwise I'd ask you to send your yolks to me. What's with everyone throwing away the best part of the egg? The myth about cholesterol was dispelled a couple of decades ago. The only possible reason to avoid them is to reduce total calories for weight loss, if that's your reason, then reduce something else. Eat the whole egg.

Beef liver is actually higher in most of those nutrients. But I much prefer chicken.

It's not for the cholestrol ,it's because 12 yolks would be too much .Considering the fact that one big egg has 75 calories, that'd make 12 eggs=900 calories. Having 900 calories alone from eggs would be disaster for me .I do eat yolks (1-2 everyday).

hi!

actually i dnt think i have much trouble with rice.i can only guess two reasons, one my community is evolved to eat white rice and do well with it.

(i have heard many have various issues with white rice while am sure u have heard we bengalis have no/less issues with it unless its diabetes or intolerants - which is rare)

i take a pinch of cinnamon after meal but i have noticed that even when i dnt do so - i am good.

probably because i have good amount of lentils(protein),fish(almost 6 days a week ,sometimes swapped with chicken home made curry) and lots of veggies.

actually GI of brown rice and white rice isnt very different.

but brown rice just has more nutrients!

so if its the GI that is concerning then i think we aint too bad!

i too think yolk is the best part of egg.u know its got nutrients in bulk.

i agree about the calorie content.

but 12 eggs are a lot any way for me!lol!

i understand ur work out very hard,so may be its okay for u.

have 1-2 yolks a day and stick to whites if u r concerned.

alternativista,

as whole i meant not the refine stuff!

oats and buckwheat are good but in this part of the world i cant tag them 'common'.

my country lives on wheat(unrefined atta; refined maida) and rice.

other flours like bajra and ragi are used too but less in amount(or only in some states!).

as for beef liver,

yes,i have heard its great health wise.i should have mentioned.

but it wasnt in my head then for i dnt have it.

for religious reasons.

we r not allowed to!

its either chicken or mutton and some have pork too.

I agree with your math but i want to reduce my body fat percentage from 16% (current) to 10%.I already have a lot of peanut butter (i'm crazy about it) . Hence i avoid egg yolks. :)

P.S: Being calorie conscious i'd chose other things which are yummier over yolk :)

I don't know who thinks potatoes are poison. They are nearly empty calories and the way most people prepare and eat them, they are junk.

And that is a stupid article. If the autor is concerned about blood presseure, they should recommend foods that are much better sources of potassium while also being good sources of other important nutrients like beans, greens, and squashes. And then the relegate other white vegetables that are good for you to one sentence: cauliflower, onions, garlic, mushrooms, etc.
