How Sensitive Are You To Unhealthy Food?

Hi everyone,

I've had moderate/severe acne for 10 years. As with most people on here I've gone through the usual courses of antibiotics which included 2 stints of Roaccutane, which did nothing. I experienced improvement after changing my diet significantly. This included cutting out all soft drinks, dairy and bread. I began including a lot more vegetables and for the most part my fluids consist of mostly water and organic teas.

However, this improvement is far from where I want to be. Even though I have improved my diet significantly I still do cheat a bit and I'm wondering if removing this will ultimately make me clear. The problem is that I often go long periods where the cheating is so minimal that I question whether eliminating it completely will make any difference.

A typical Monday to Friday lunch/dinner consists of meat (usually chicken for lunch and some beef at dinner) and vegetables (broccoli, peas, carrots and sauerkraut). Where I cheat is afterwards, I might have 3-5 small pieces of chocolate off a bar. Occasionally I will have some potato chips when I get a craving for something salty but this at worst happens once a week.

A bit of other information. I have a suspicion that it might be the beef and other red meat, so I'm slowly starting to replace it with baked fish marinated with olive oil, paprika and turmeric. I have a yellow coating on my tongue and even when my face is clear I usually still have a lot of red marks on my scalp and to a less extent on my chest.

Has anyone found that by going from LOW tolerance to ZERO tolerance for bad foods that they made a NOTABLE step in curing their acne?

You should be able to cheat once in a while when most of your meals drinks and snacks are low to moderate GL and full of nutrient dense foods. Especially when you are having the sugar after the meal. And your body should be able to deal with whatever harm from the trans fats if you are mostly eating well.

What is your acne like? Has it changed, besides being reduced? Do you have digestion issues of any kind? Allergies?

Yellow coating is usually an oral hygiene issue, but you could look into candida. How long hae you been eating the low sugar diet? Does the sauerkraut have live probiotic? Any other probiotic sources?

I have cut out dairy, bread and soft drinks for over a year now. However, only in the last 3 months or so did I up the ante with vegetables (in terms of volume) and cut out rice which became a semi-staple after incorrectly thinking it would be good for me. I've been taking a probiotic supplement for about 3 months. The Sauerkraut is not refrigerated when purchased, but no where on the label does it say it has been pasteurized. I actually raised the question with a microbiologist at my work and he said he looked at unpasteurized (but warm) sauerkraut out of a tin can under a microscope and it still had cultures so I gave myself the benefit of the doubt.

It's hard to recall if my acne has 'changed', although at the moment it's mostly on my cheeks and neck.

I'm not sure how to tell if I have digestion issues either, I am regular if that's what you're implying. I don't get stomach aches or feel any other discomfort after meals (healthy or unhealthy).

I haven't had any formalized allergy tests, I do go long periods where I have a very minimalist diet like the one I mentioned above. That's why I suspected the red meat because I really can't eliminate many more foods.

I also have persistent dandruff which may or may not be related.

Dandruff is about hyper proliferation of skin cells, so yeah, it's related. In fact there's probably lots of research into dandruff and treatments that would be applicable to acne.

If you have no discomfort after eating, I wouldn't focus on digestion. I would add greens and cabbage to your diet.

What about sleep? Stress? Sunlight?

I always get 7-8hrs of sleep, although I usually do go to bed late (earliest midnight).

I did notice my skin was at its worst when I was stressed out at work, but even when I have nothing on my mind my acne is still at the same level as now. One other thing though, even when I'm not 'stressed' I do still feel tense. It's not something recent but has always been part of my make up. And when under stressful situations my anxiety goes through the roof. For example, I had to learn something new at work and someone commented that I get way too paranoid about making a mistake.

By greens do you mean leafy greens like in a garden salad? I sometimes have red cabbage, particularly when I'm out of sauerkraut.
