Probiotics Curing Then Causing Acne?

Hello everyone.. I am wondering if you guys have ever experienced what I have here.

A few months or so ago I began taking Probiotic supplements. At first my acne was clearing very nicely to te point where I was almost completely clear (I have severe acne most of the time). Slowly though my acne started to come back, even though I hadn't changed anything. So after about a month of taking the probiotics I stopped.

A couple weeks ago I decided to try probiotics again (tried to get a better brand online instead in a health store) and again my acne almost completely cleared up. However the last few days my acne had started coming back and yesterday and today it's quite bad. It seemed to go bad faster this time.

So my question is.. has anyone experienced this with probiotics? Do I need to just wait it out and hope my skin clears if I take the probiotics for a longer period? Could they be causing new/different acne? I'm just not sure how to deal with this information.

As a side note I have been dealing with acne for years and nothing ever seems to work. I am getting so exhausted trying to figure out how to stop it..

Probiotics are great for the body, but not the only thing you need to cure acne.

What have you been eating? Do you think you can create a list of foods you've eaten for the past week?

I would suggest that if your acne has come back while still taking these then you need to look at other variables that may have cause your breakout.

I will say that I eat poorly. I'm also betting that's a huge reason my acne has gotten worse through the years. I have tried not eating dairy and wheat but that didn't work. I think it's just my overall bad eating habits. I was hoping the probiotics (and vitamin) supplements would help because since I eat bad I could imagine not having good gut "flora" or whatever.

Honestly eating is a really hard thing for me and something I have tried and tried to be better at but had failed (for acne and weight loss). I suppose this thread is a waste of your time and I apologize. I still think that there might be other things at play because my acne seems so random and I haven't been able to pin it on anything because of that.

Still can't figure out why the probiotics would heal me and then stop and/or bring acne back.

Probiotics Curing and then Causing Acne...Yes! I experienced the same exact thing. My current GI specialist told me that the reasoning behind this is that by consuming probiotics you are helping your body get rid of any overgrowth of bad bacteria or yeast in your small intestine. However, once the balance is restored, by consuming ever more probiotics you are putting "good" bacteria in "bad" places. There are over 5 lbs of bacteria in your colon, if they travel north (up) into your small intestine they can lead to digestive issues, namely small bowel bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). It is my belief, and my Dr.'s as well, that acne is directly related to gut health. If you suffer from a microbial imbalance you will experience acne. If you consome probiotics in excess you are pushing yourself out of balance. Please read this for more information http://www.gutpathogens.com/content/3/1/1

thats interesting, something I never knew.

How can you find the middle ground with probiotics?

Do you consume the probiotics with food?

Did you just gulp it down?

Have you tried probiotics that are edible, like Kimchi?

Kombucha?

Skin ultimately is connected to the body. In order to heal acne, the body must be considered whole, and not isolated to individual parts.

Your skin can be classified as separate system, but it's connected to your brain through nerves. Nerves also wrap around the stomach and other organs.

Our bodies are an intelligent system that delivers information to us, and likely, to others. This information manifests itself in the form of acne, hives, swelling, pain, etc.

I don't believe true healing can begin unless the diet is changed. If your acne persists, this is not a topical issue.

This is interesting, although I've never heard it like that before. One thing that doesn't make sense to me is that some people have been completely cured using probiotics (acne and other conditions) and not had side effects like additional acne. I don't think that I'm taking too much.. I'm actually taking exactly what the box describes. I will keep this in mind though, thanks.

I try to wait (like it suggests on the box/probiotics container directions) before or after eating food when I take the probiotic.

I'm not sure what you mean by "just gulp it down".

I have not tried edible probiotics. Those kind of intimidate me, and I'm not sure where to get them in my area.

I agree that this is not a topical issue for me. I have had acne for years now and just the way it behaves leads me to believe I need to make a holistic change. I think you're right that I have to change my diet. I know it seems like I just want the easy way out, and maybe I do, but dealing with this for so long I have tried SO many things. Diet is the one thing I am weak to - food is too important to me for some reason. It's just SO good. That is something I will have to figure out though. I appreciate all of the help. Hey MarredHope,

The thing that made me change, was that I was healed about 90% with topicals. I still had jawline acne and painful cysts behind my ear, and many strange pimples would surface around my mouth region.

I turned 30, and I just looked at the mirror and saw that the problem, over time, will only get worse. By the time I'm 35, I will have accumulated more and more scarring if I didn't stop the cycle of breakouts.

I too, love food as much as the next person - trust me.

Would you like to know what I've eaten regularly over my life? I'm going to make a list. It may scare you :

- Pop tarts

- coco puffs

- captain crunch

- coco pebbles

- fruity pebbles

- frosted mini wheats

- chili cheese fries

- sourdough jack from j-box

- spaghetti with cheese from jollibee

- a bucket of chicken drumsticks

- pepsi

- burger king whopper

- bacon potato wedges with cheese

- more cheese

- lots more cheese

- toasted sourdough bread with a double layer of sharp cheddar

- spam onigiri, which is spam on top of rice and a sheet of nori wrapped around

- bagels with cream cheese layered almost a centimeter thick

- giant "bruschettas" with cheese on top

- entire boxes of cookies of every kind, mostly chocolate chip and oatmeal (anyone ever tell you oatmeal is good for the skin?)

(Are you noticing a trend? There is a clear addiction that I have with carbs, sugar, and cheese.)

Now, I have never even tiptoed or come close to being overweight, or even slightly overweight, or even slightly chubby. I am a what people call a skinny person. I don't have much meat on the bones, but what I did have is :

- fluid retention

- low energy

- acne

- nervous system going haywire (most people today have damaged nervous systems from excessive drinking and drug use)

- poor digestion

- inflammation of the cells

- weak liver function due to overproduction of hormones

- overproduction of oil

- skin cells do not shed properly

Some peoples' poor diets will result in fat gain, while others have acne. The human body is 99% the same across the board, so our bodies know what is bad for us, but at the same time, everyone's bodies will react differently.

Mine chose acne.

Again, I was sick of it and wanted to feel better. The problem with eating so many sugar rich and carb rich foods, as well as allergy inducing foods (dairy and gluten), is that it will, over time, damage your system.

This is all a terrible recipe for acne and consistent cyst formations.

There are choices and compromises :

1. You make a change for the better, and improve your overall health inside of the body, while as a side effect, lessening the severity of your acne and potentially curing it.

As your body becomes stronger, more resilient, and more functional, it will be able to handle the poor choices one makes, in moderation. There was a time when I could eat all of the pop tarts that I wanted as a kid, and nothing would happen - but over a lifetime of eating poorly, your body needs recovery time. I'd say an entire year of eating well could turn back the clock, if not a single week.

2. You can continue eating the way you do, and searching for supplements and topicals to try and fix the problem.

I looked to logic to figure out that we need to eat as our ancestors did. I'm not encouraging a paleo diet, I'm simply saying that there are things programmed in our body due to millions of years of evolution (allergies, intolerances), and that we are adjusted to chewing and eating plant matter in its unprocessed form.

Our bodies know how to handle this dietary fiber and micronutrient content.

I encourage you to just try it. If you're truly sick of acne, just try changing your diet. There's a lot of advice in this forum and a lot of people absolutely refuse to give it a shot, even though the answer(s) are staring them in the face. They're just too passionately connected to their lifestyles and food cravings.

I said enough was enough, and not a single food craving or cake could make me stray from temptation. I'll never gorge on sweets, carbs, and dairy again.

It pains me to say it, but these addictions are what keep a lot of our food industry running, but also slowly killing us all.

A few tips to target cravings :

Do you have savoury cravings?

Try making bars out of almonds, berries, honey, and sea salt. Mix it all together and bake it in the oven for a little. This contains sugar and carbs, so moderate the bites as they can be really tasty.

Do you have cheese cravings?

Try throwing some feta cheese (very light sprinklings) across a kale salad. I usually use this dressing :

- greek yogurt (my body can tolerate this)

- mustard or dill

- honey

- worchestershire sauce

I whisk together the ingredients lightly, and then put some avocados and feta into a bunch of chopped Kale. The dressing off-sets the bitterness of kale, as does the nutty flavour of the avocadoes. The feta gives you these wonderful bites of cheesy flavor.

My next experiment will be creating a kimchi flavored aioli, which will consist of whisking together an egg yolk with olive oil, salt, and chopped up kimchi.

This will create a delicious topping for some baked salmon or tilapia which has been lightly seasoned with salt, pepper, and garlic.

You can even layer bacon (try to find some nitrate free bacon) on top.

You can still eat wonderfully tasty things. It's just about being a bit more creative and knowledgeable on what will cause our acne and what won't.

The key is targeting your food cravings, and creating relatively healthy alternatives.

If you know that your diet is poor, then you need to do something about it. It is akin to having a large unpaid bill and you are just ignoring the debt collectors. Complications will catch up to you eventually as you age. Do you want to have a heart attack by the age of 50 or get cancer? That is when people wake up and start to live more responsibly, but by that time point it is too late. It is all about will power. Just do it. No Excuses. It is simply a matter of not eating poor food. Stop putting bad food into your mouth.

Yeah, avoiding hamburgers and pizzas is not a "good diet". Avoiding hamburgers and pizzas is the bare minimum of kindness you can do for yourself if you have acne. Yogurts are generally loaded with sugar, so unless you're eating plain, unsweetened yogurt, that is also terrible for skin. Orange juice from the store (from concentrate) is junk and is a glucose bomb. Avoid it.

A mom-cooked "solid" meal is a vague descriptor, but mom food usually involves a lot of carbohydrate (at least my mom's cooking does). If you're getting acne, I'd suspect it's from too much sugar and carbohydrate, not from probiotics or a lack thereof. Cut out sugar and excess carbs; The bad bacteria in your gut won't be feasting so happily, and your skin will likely improve.
