This thread is for personal reference, but you can use it as well.

to me this shows that 6desaturase is present in borage oil.

alot of what ive been reading says that the conversion rate of ALA ranges anywhere from .04% to 14% in young females.

these both show me that a deficiency of delta 6 desaturase can cause problems in the body especially skin problems.

the delta 6 desaturase enzyme is the rate limiting component in the conversion of ALA to EPA and DHA. It is also what converts LA to GLA.

so possibly, supplementing ALA and increasing the 6desaturase in your body could potentially increase EPA and DHA in the body without supplementing with fish oil. But how can one increase 6desaturase in the body?

an anecdote here from another user

http://www.acne.org/messageboard/index.php/topic/255168-my-story-how-flax-oil-and-borage-oil-cured-my-acne/

even though the title says flax oil he actually used hemp oil and borage oil together. My thinking is that borage oil either does one of two things (or both). 1. supplies GLA which allows the body to focus on converting ALA to EPA and DHA because it doesn't need to use delta 6 desaturase for the conversion of LA to GLA. Because LA is abundant in the american diet, most of the delta 6 desaturase is used on the LA and not the ALA. ALA conversionn is what we need to curb acne. 2. delta 6 desaturase actually exists in borage oil in some bioavilable form. I have seen some studies implying this but the scientific talk is hard to understand. So basically the delta 6 desaturase IN borage oil helps convert ALA to epa and dha in the body since the conversion rate is generally so low.

these are just theories and not proven at all

the problem with the user's anecdote is that that user has posted before about curing his acne with topical alcohol and quitting milk. So this anecdote has very little merit.

so maybe a source of ALA (hemp oil or chia seeds) with borage oil could help with acne? I will try this out I think.

I have read online that lecithin is needed with borage oil for absorption. After a severe breakout, this last week, i used borage oil with a raw egg yolk (lecithin) a bit of high vitamin butter (other fat for absorption) and a little bit of hemp oil (not measured/inconsistent). I saw great improvement but recently have been breaking out more, i suspect that it is because I haven't been using hemp seed oil with my borage oil as much anymore. I didn't think much of it before, I just added it to make my fat intake more complete.

Previously i was taking 10 pills a day, split up 5 with lunch, 5 with dinner. one raw egg yolk each time. Each pill has 220mg of GLA. So in total about 2200mg of Borage oil a day. THis might be excessive for some people but I'm going to stick with it except this time i am going to add hemp seed oil at a consistent dose, about one table spoon each time.

hopefully this ALA from the hemp seed oil mixed with borage oil will help my acne.

"GLA also stimulated the metabolism of ALA to its long chain desaturated N-3 metabolites"

it interesting because somewhere else i read that no one has been able to isolate gla in a supplement so all the studies were done using blackcurrant, evening primrose, or borage oil.So maybe it wasn't specifically the GLA in borage but a multitude of ffactors that stimulated the metabolism of ALA to EPA and DHA

So I have been doing this for about 5 days and today I woke up and noticed my skin looked clearer. Hmmm I wasn't expecting that. I won't say it is the borage oil plus the hemp oil just yet. I'm going to give it 2 to 4 weeks until I can say what the effects are

so this isnt working as well as i hoped. My acne isnt doing so good today. I feel kind of shitty. Im hoping it is becasue I am abstaining from masturbaitno and this is the 7 day spike. Today is my 8th day. I will try to stick with that for a week or more to see if masturbation is a factor. I tried this in the past and it helped but not enough.

I'm going to try looking into SIBO. I dont have noticeable digestive issues but I do have these issues:

Random warm face flushes/flashes

Particularly smelly flatulence

Low energy/flatulence

Brain fog (i have this majorly!)

Eye floaters

Changing appetite

The other reasons i may have sibo: I breakout from broccoli and soy which are triggers for SIBO. Also, tons of fruit tend to break me out. Maybe my SIBO manifests as acne rather than blaoting and intestinal discomfort.

Alcohol also breaks me out.

proof that probiotics may break out people with SIBO

incidentally probiotics break me out so much.

YES I DO!

fiber used to help me but recently it hasn't worked. 2 years back when i frist started to deal with acne, fiber helped my situation. but now it doesn't. maybe i need more insoluble fiber for a SIBO diet.

i think i might try a FODMAP/SIBO diet plus hydrochloric acid plus not eating before bed. I read it takes 6 hours for food to leave the small intestines so I won't go to bed until at least 5 hours after eating too.

just found out that soy is a "human pepsin killer"

I did the baking soda test. 1/4 teaspoon in 8 oz cold water upon waking. I didnt burp at all. It is said that people with normal stomach acid levels will burp within 2 to 3 minutes.

soy is a HUGE aggravator for me.

zinc and b complex is required to produce stomach acid, build healthy gut, immune etc. Instead of supplements abstain for few years and you should be clear.

Have you seen my thread on linoleic acid deficiency being a culprit behind all kinds of mammalian skin problems? http://www.acne.org/...cid +deficiency I know there's a lot of info about stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1 (SCD1). And a little about

alot of what ive been reading says that the conversion rate of ALA ranges anywhere from .04% to 14% in young females.

iodine deficiency leads to a lack of stomach acid?

so since soy, flax, and broccoli all break me out and are all goitrogenic which deplete iodine in the body they result in low stomach acid? Wow everything is so intertwined. Should i supplement with Betaine HCL or Iodine?

I started my betaine HCL (sola ray) on sunday night. It is now tuesday night so it has been two days. My skin feels a bit softer but its too soon to tell. I will update here.

on sunday i took 4 pills. and since then i have raised it to 8 pills per meal. Each pill i believe has 648 mg of betaine hcl and 150 mg of pepsin

I haven't had any burning of the stomach or nausea with 8 pills but i don't really want to increase it because of cost reasons.

i also havent masturbated for 11 days and i recently broke out on my 9th day. This is strange because before I broke out on the 7th day. My acne doesn't seem to be improving at all.

i've been taking the pills at the end of my meals, sometimes 20 mins after. Should i be taking them before the meal?

I tried the no drinking 2 hours before and after every meal for a while. This seemed to work very well actually. I thought it was my salvation. But i have had some more bad breakouts since then. BUT! i have been less consistent with it. Sometimes i drink water and then 30 mins later I eat. Maybe I need to be very strict with this. I always assumed it was the not drinking water after the meal that was the most important, but it could possibly be both. I wonder if drinking alot of water on an empty stomach dilutes stomach acids for a prolonged period of time.
