hello, everyone. i wanted to write about a few things, but mostly ask about how you wash your face. i mean you, personally, what do you use and how do you use it? i have started to wonder if i should leave the soap on my face longer, or less time, or to keep rubbing my face while i wash or to just let it sit for a minute. right now i am use Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash because my dermatologist recommended it, but no matter what i do my acne never seems to improve.

i do not know if i should use something else, or try nothing at all, or what. i have tried many other products and nothing seems to work. also i have been taking supplements somewhat regularly and even with those i notice no improvement. i am willing to try anything at this point and i am considering finally going on Accutane, although i do not know if that might be somewhat negative because i have some issues with my digestive tract. also it was only until maybe this past year that i found out there is a supposed link between acne and digestive health.

i have been trying to figure out why i have acne and the only thing i can figure is that it has something to do with my digestion, but i'm not sure. i never had acne until i was 24 years old, and i have had it every day of my life since then. i am wondering if i have a hormone imbalance or something... i eat well, i don't touch my face, i take vitamins... i don't get it. my skin is very oily and it never used to be. i have been making a concerted effort to clear my skin but it is always bad.

what works??

Because you are 24 and you didn't have acne before, I'd say it's hormonal. Almost all adult acne is. Accutane won't fix it if it is hormonal, I suggest that you tell your dermatologist that you'd like a hormone test. If your dermatologist refuses and keeps pushing just one treatment, i.e. Accutane, I suggest you look for one who is willing to listen to you!

^^to the above: my acne is moderate, i would say. i don't have it as bad as some people, but i generally have at least 10 pimples on and around my face, all the time. i don't know... just when it starts to clear it gets worse again.

and armadillo, i just turned 28. i have had acne since i was 24.... i am wondering if it really is hormonal and what will change it. how do you get tested for such things?

Sorry, I didn't realise you were 28, then even more the reason to have a check up on your hormones. The test are pretty straight forward, your doctor can either choose to test your blood, which is the most common way of doing it, or your urine or even your saliva. They will draw some blood and test it in a lab, then analyse the results. That's it. If the cost is too high, you can order saliva testing kits online, but looking at the prices, they seem like a rip off to me, you might as well get your doctor to do it. Just tell him/her you'd like it done.

do you go to your dermatologist for this or to a physician or what? and you just tell them you want to test your hormone levels? also, i am kind of interested in checking on my gut flora, because i have been suspecting that my digestive system has something to do with my acne.

i might have posted this once before on here, but i only have a quarter of my large intestine because i came out backwards when i was born and swallowed amniotic fluid, which gave me gangrene in my large intestine. they had to remove three fourths of it and i nearly died. as a result of this, my poop is sometimes (if not all the time) more acidic than usual and i have had issues with it and my colon throughout my whole life. although i never really got acne when i was younger, it is affecting me now more than ever and i am wondering why. i have been taking probiotics for a month or so and just finished a bottle of capsules. i show no improvement in my skin even taking those, zinc, l-lysine, vitamin D3, vitamin A, a multivitamin, and i have been taking Herpanacine for the last 2 months because i saw it reviewed on here... nothing has helped. i don't take all of these supplements all the time, but i try to be consistent with some of them.

I really don't know if your condition can affect your skin...have you tried researching a link between the two? I honestly have never heard of what you have.

There's no reason why a physician couldn't do this test. Do you have a regular physician whom you see regularly? An endocrinologist would be the specialist to study hormones, so you would probably need to see one of them, if your physician can't do it.
