Once side effects presented themselves when I finished the course, the derm didn't want to know me.

Ive complained several times to the HCC with no recourse.

I saw another derm who fobbed off my side effects as 'aging'. Im 31 not 91.

My family & husband think Im insane. Nobody understands how devastating these effects are.

When I started Accutane I did an obsessive amount of research, calculated my dosage, checked in with my doctor, review my blood test...didn't you see warning signs?

12 boxes of 20 mg = 30*20*20 = 7200 / 54kg = 133mg/kg

Seems fine, Maybe you meant 40mg?

Well I've just seen a post that changed the whole picture. Sorry Livetoregret, I didn't know you suffer these symptoms for the last 18 months. Still, I'd recommend you try to stay positive, even if all your symptoms won't go away, there are far worse troubles than these.

Now, I can just tell you to calm down but lets look at your symptoms:

1) Dry/Brittle Hair and Hair-Loss -- I am not saying you're just paranoid but you should know most people are paranoid about their hair once they start checking it and touching it daily (please don't count the hairs you lose - that is stupid). EVEN IF you are losing hair, hair loss will stop 6 months after you stopped Accutane and the hair will grow back faster than ever. I think that regarding the dryness there are some things you can use to moisturize it (see 3).

2) Acne is back -- That's bad luck, but it's not the end of the world, first, try not getting so nervous about other things, it's not healthy and might aggravate your acne, second, you should try using topical creams or medications for it. You'll see it will go away, just give it some time. If it won't, you can always go on Accutane again in a year or so (I wouldn't recommend going on Accutane again sooner because you are obviously very worried about your hair).

3) Your skin is dry and you have wrinkles -- Well bad news darling, OIL PRODUCTION WILL COME BACK, might cause you acne all over again but it will also make your skin look younger and your wrinkles will probably not be visible.

4) Scars -- Can be treated 6 months after stopping Accutane, there are very good scar treatments out there, you'll have your baby face back in no-time... seriously there are so many scars treatments there is no way you will fail on this one.

5) Fatloss, hollow cheeks and face -- Gain some weight, you won't stay hollow, if you do, you should consider working as an Accutane advertiser because if staying slim is a side-effect their sales will skyrocket.

6) Poorly healing skin - 6 months you'll know nothing about that.

7) EVERYTHING IS TREATABLE, NOTHING IS RUINED, CALM THE F*** DOWN.

I know everything seems so dark from where you're standing, but try to relax. Just let some time pass and don't do anything extreme, you will see everything is fine in no-time.

Go see a doctor, I am certain that he will tell you it's all good and you'll go back to normal in no-time.

Don't be stressed or paranoid it's not good for health at all and might cause you some real-world problems (cancer and shit).

Source: personal experience with stress&depression, very thorough research on Accutane, Accutane usage, Optimism.

P.S: I suggest you start a log regarding your symptoms and how they heal up, consider adding pictures (only if you want to), you won't believe how good you're recovering.

Somehow I have a feeling you are either new to taking Accutane or you had a postive outcome! There is nothing that states hairloss will come back in 6months after Accutane, Roche even claims that it can cause Alopecia and may not recover after the course is ended, etc...... I could go on but won't!

I am still taking Accutane, actually I started not long ago, but I've been through the hell of checking my hair every 2 minutes (had some B5 experience) it's not good for anything, I've had the depression and the anxiety of my life.

I did have hair loss probably due to the same situation Accutane sometimes causes that's called telogen effluvium, I stopped taking B5, had a bad month and a half, but it stopped and hair grew back (actually it stopped two weeks after I stopped worrying so much).

I am not in favor of Accutane and not defending the drug, I myself hoping I won't suffer its horrible side-effects, that's all.

I just noticed in this thread (she has posted in others) that she didn't mention in her 1st post she has been off Accutane I think if I remember 1 or 2 now! Advice though if you are going through depression or anxiety due to Accutane I must advise that you should stop as Roche even states that you should stop and even then it may or may not go away! Good luck and maybe try holistic or light therapy:)

The depression was actually before I started Accutane and was due to the hair-loss I've experienced. So far Accutane has stabilized me both mentally and physically, I hope it continues this way until the end of treatment.

I took it in 2009. I was not given any info and was told any side effects would last during treatment only. Blood tests were not done - except for pregnancy test.

I had no side effects until coming OFF it. No dry skin, lips, ghair or anything during treatment.

yes, 40 mg. cumulative dose was twice what I should have been given.

As a woman these side effects have taken away so much from me, changed me physically and what Im going through makes it impossible to stay positive, this has destroyed my life

Im not doing well.

Mental Health came to see me last night at my home. My husband contacted them.

Weve been together 16 yrs and this is the toughest storm we have been through.

I am struggling with suicidal thoughts everyday - so pls dont tell me to calm the fuck down ok?

I only look forward to going to bed each day in the hope that I wont have to wake up and live this nightmare another day.

I also go to sleep thinking its just all a bad dream and I will wake up tomorrow and its all just an awful nightmare and I can continue my life without agonizing over my skin and hair and watching hand ful after handful fall out day after day.

I had a wonderful life before all this.

Biggest mistake of my life that I cannot undo.

My skin continues to grow tighter & drier daily. Its ashy and thin and has gone from being fair/pale to mottled and dark from dehydration.

I look like a walking corpse.

My hair over this almost 2 years is NOT re growing. It continues to get thinner and drier every day.

@sanlosang

My hair has NOT recovered in the slightest, it continues to become drier and drier and the loss has only increased over time.

I have seen many doctors - spent thousands on specialists, supplements, hair treatments, skin creams, oils, etc etc etc

NOTHING HAS HELPED.

There is no oil to hydrate my hair or skin. It has not come back even in the slightest. Even after a warm night sleeping my face is BONE dry.

My skin has become so hyper sensitive that my whole face has gone darker, is brown and red patches of dehydrated skin all over my face. There is no plumpness left to my skin, all the lipids or the subcutaneous fat has been sucked from my face and I look sick.

I have dark patches under my eyes, skin tone looks like that of someone with a severe illness.

The fact I scar with every blemish and my skin cannot even tolerate being touched means that lasers or anything are not an options for me. Scar treatment's whether they be peels or laser etc also thins the skin, my skin is now draped so tightly over my bones, Its literally paper thin. I have no skin to lose, I also cannot even heal from a simple pimple, I cannot pluck a hair without massive red patches all over my face so considering invasive treatment is totally out of the question.

These things to me , as a woman so damaging on confidence & self esteem and makes me hide from the world.

Its one thing for someone who is not experiencing these side effects to sit back and say - be positive it'll be fine - but I AM NOT RECOVERING DESPITE MY BEST EFFORTS TO REMAIN POSITIVE FOR THE PAST 2 YEARS OK?

Thanks for your opinion, but please dont down play the hell I am going through.

Hi, I am sorry to hear about what you're going through. The accutane pills have damaged your body but all you need to do is repair it by building up your immune system through proper meals, exercise, hydrating the body and rest. Also, I know this is difficult, but you have to try and stop worrying because this will worsen the symptoms. Ok, so below I have listed some things for you to try for both your hair and skin:

1. Buy 1000mg of Biotin from health store and take 1 tablet a day (Biotin strengthens the hair and aids hair growth)

2. Wash your hair once a week (dont wash everyday). Washing the hair everyday dries out your hair and restricts hair growth. I also recommend that you condition your hair more than you shampoo. Condition your hair twice weekly. Also, get some coconut oil and a daily moisturizer for your hair.

3. Cut your hair once every 8 months or whenever you have split ends.

4. Do a deep hair treatment every two weeks with a protein conditioner. Your hair is protein, therefore it needs protein to grow.

5. Do not apply any form of heat to your hair. To obtain a curly look, use flexi rods.

6. Break an egg in your hair once per week. Then shampoo (only roots, when you rinse out the shampoo, this will wash the body of the hair), then condition your hair.

7. Set your hair at night or wrap it with cloth to protect your hair ends.

8. Use a wide tooth comb and bush to comb your hair.

9. Exercise

10. Drink lots of water (8 glasses a day)

11. Get 9 hours of sleep every night in complete darkness. Sleep repairs the body. Make sure you go to bed by the latest 10pm.

12. Watch this video on tips to grow your hair

Things you must eat for your hair to be restored:

1. Salmon (eat a fruit with this and vegetables, your body needs vitamin c to absorb iron from fish and other foods containing iron)

2. Snapper (eat a fruit)

3. Get a Vitamin C 1000MG supplement (preferrably liquid form). Take 2 tablets every 12 hours. You cannot overdose with vitamin c. So don't worry about that.

4. Avocado

5. Honey - 1 table spoon everyday with tea, such as green tea (good for skin)

6. Egg

7. Kiwi

8. Sunflower seeds, two table spoons.

9. Turkey

10. Skim milk a glass everyday

10. Green Tea, Chamomile tea

12. Fruits and vegetables

13. Absolutely no fast foods and no bad sugars.

14. No sweet drinks. If you have to make juice, drink lemonade, or blend some fruits.

Skin

1. Use raw cocoa butter, rub it on your skin, leave it for 15 mins then rinse. Do this twice daily.

2. Natural Black soup use acne.orgs 10 second rule in wash your face. Rinse.

3. Vitamins to take, zinc, B3, vitamin A and Vitamin C

4. Get your sleep

5. Do not touch your face, only touch it when you wash and moisturize it

6. Use sunblock with SPF 30

7. Since your skin is very dry, I recommend using sulfur to treat your acne, but consult with a doctor before you do. Some people are allergic to sulfur medications.

8. Do this mask every week (watch video)

9. Buy a moisturizer with vitamin C.

10. Do a honey and lime mask (1 lime and 1 table spoon of honey; apply to face and neck). Leave on your face for 30 mins every night. Then rinse and go to sleep. [Whenever you put on a mask, it is advise to not smile or show facial expressions. I recommend putting on the mask and lying down on the bed with your eyes closed for the 30 mins. Set the timer so you can wake and wash the mask off your face and neck.

Foods to eat for healthy skin:

1. Eggs

2. Avocado

3. Sweet potato

4. Spinach (has lots of iron too, so eat a fruit to absorb the iron)

5. Blueberries, Blackberries, Raspberries, and Strawberries - A cup of berries a day. Blend them into fruit smoothies, add them to breakfast cereal, and use them in pancake or muffin batter. Cereal and pancake batter should be gluten free.

6. Vegetables and Beans

7. Skinless Chicken, Fish and Nuts

8. Olive oil use olive oil for most of your dishes.

9. Garlic - add raw, minced garlic to as many of your dishes as possible. Also, eat a raw clove twice per month. Garlic is good for skin, hair, fights cancer, prevents cancer, and strains the blood; a natural antibiotic (helps to prevent acne).

10. Honey 1 table spoon to a cup of warm water.

11. Green tea aim for 3 cups a day. Prevents wrinkles. A good antioxidant for the skin.

12. Salmon & Other Omega 3s

13. Water 8 to 10 glasses a day

14. Eating foods with Vitamin A and C

15. Chamomile tea will help you sleep, which your skin needs. Drink a cup every night an hour before you go to bed.

Once you follow these tips you will see results but don't expect it to work overnight. Be patient and try not to worry. Your hair and skin is damaged because your body is damaged overall. These tips will help repair your body. Make sure you exercise (you and your husband can do a hobby together such as lawn tennis, jogging, walking, dancing [latin dance]. Drink a lot of water, avoid bad sugars and sleep. I will pray for you. God bless you and I believe these tips will help.

Also, do these cleanse:

1. Colon clease (preferably liquid form)

2. Parasite cleanse

3. Liver cleanse (drink lime water before going to bed and the following morning before breakfast). Do the liver cleanse once a month.

4. Blood cleanse (blend beet roots, cumcumber and carrots together) Drink for 1 week. When doing this cleanse avoid junk food and bad sugars.

Your skin looks amazing...I don't think you can look any better without makeup or photoshop. Maybe you have body dismorphic disorder and all the other symptoms are due to stress. If you can't find anything else to like at least enjoy your BIG GIGANTIC blue eyes.

SUSS - You are very kind, thank you so much for your prays & kind thoughts and suggestions. You have listed some good tips alot of them I already do.

I take biotin, VIT C, VIT E, Flax seeds every day multiple times, EPO,Folic Acid & colostrum for B vitamins

I do not heat treat/ colour - this makes no difference though, my hair looked, felt better and shed less when I was colouring I think

I use protein treatments ( Moroccan oil etc)I wash once per week

I eat avocados everyday, drink at least 2 L's water,

I eat healthy - fruit and veg mostly - little sugar or bread or anything just muesli in the morning, avoid milk,

I feel I've tried everything over this time and am at a loss. Im waiting on a wig from RPG show right now....:('

2. Wash your hair once a week (don™t wash everyday).

9. Turkey

10. Skim milk “ a glass everyday

10. Green Tea, Camomile tea

2. Natural Black soup “ use acne.org™s 10 second rule in wash your face. Rinse.

8. Olive oil “ use olive oil for most of your dishes.

9. Garlic - add raw, minced garlic to as many of your dishes as possible. Also, eat a raw clove twice per month. Garlic is good for skin, hair, fights cancer, prevents cancer, and strains the blood; a natural antibiotic (helps to prevent acne).

10. Honey “ 1 table spoon to a cup of warm water.

11. Green tea “ aim for 3 cups a day. Prevents wrinkles. A good antioxidant for the skin.

12. Salmon & Other Omega 3s

13. Water “ 8 to 10 glasses a day

14. Eating foods with Vitamin A and C

15. Chamomile tea “ will help you sleep, which your skin needs.

Have you been/ are you going through this SUSS?

Any feedback is appreciated

Ps - I eat 2 punnets of blueberries per day, I eat sunflower seeds also. Sleep is my main issue - I cannot get a full night. I go to sleep ok, but wakeup after a couple of hours usually.

@ Live to regret, you have to try these tips at the same time and you have to get sleep. Drink Chamomile tea every night. Turn off the lights and sleep. Also, pray about it. Prayer helps too.

I have had severe dry skin and skin problems. I still have breakouts but it is not as bad as before. I had acne on my face, back, chest and arms. Now I only have a little on my face. But I am planning to stick to my diet because I have been eating some junk food lately. I haven't tried Accutane but I recommend you try all what I have posted and de-stress. Stress can make you sick and also kills people. So you need to stop worrying.

Hello, I hope you are feeling better. PLEASE look into vitamin D. As a long time ago accutane user, I have needed to look into side effect issues. Long story short, vitamin D is considerably depleted by accutane which can really mess up your body. If I were to do accutane all over again, I would definitely take high dose Vitamin D along with it. Go to the Vitamin D Council website. Search in their letters section for the terms: "accutane" "acne" "GERD" and you will see a letter from Jan with a reply from Dr. Cannell that touches on this issue. Starting on high dose Vitamin D might be what you need--effects mood, skin, and lots of other things. You can also search Vitamin D in product reviews on this website for other success stories.

Just an update -

No improvement since I first posted this..My skin has continued to dry out and deteriorate not only on my face but over my entire body.

Deep lines/creases are forming on my wrists, shoulders, neck & chest.

I have avoided the sun for 15 years so it has zero to do with sun exposure. Prior to taking accutane my skin was soft & supple, milky, hydrated and youthful- all over my body. Now my skin is sallow, dehydrated, blotchy, red, thin, with fine lines all over my face.

I use the best quality natural oils and hydrating moisturizers but they do nothing. makeup does not blend and look absolutely cakey and disgusting as soon as I apply it.

My lips are so dehydrated I feel like I need to wet them every 5 seconds.

The skin around my eyes and on my check & forehead is the worst..I just cannot believe what I see when I look in the mirror every morning and I am so scared for 5 or 10 years from now already I look at elderly ladies and their skin looks to be more supple than mine.

Deep creases have formed under my eyes and my eyelids are so dry and painful this is beyond a joke.

My hair is still shedding/thinning rapidly and seems to have gotten much worse in texture and quality, it is now the thickness of a pen in a ponytail and stick flat to my head and my scalp can be seen clearly around my front hair line and all over my scalp as soon as you lift the wafer thin layer of hair that I have left.

The remaining hair continually sheds, the condition is stringy, brittle, course like horse hair.

What little regrows is transparent in colour and so fine in each hairs diameter. The hairloss also includes my lashes and eyebrows my eyebrows are now so sparse I struggle to make them look somewhat normal.

Things I have tried to remedy the hairloss/dryness and skin shriveling up/complete loss of natural oils and hydration:

All manner of supplements including iron, EPO,hyaluronic acid,Vit B complex,Vit B6,Vit C,Vit E,liquid silica, hair skin & nails formula,coconut oil,almond oil, argan oil,etc etc

I have long been focusing on my nutrition and water intake- (at least 2L p/day) ( have always been a healthy eater, but did not eat throughout the day usually)

I have been eating loads of fruit & veg since at least May 2012,eliminated sugars, breads, pasta etc

I feel like i HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING.

I am desperate, depressed, humiliated, in pain from the tightness caused by the dryness, this has completely changed my life I used to be a normal woman now all I can do is wish I could go back in time and never put this poison into my body. I am so embarrassed and what this has done to my physical appearance.

It's become apparent over time that my body has been permanantely damaged and fear my skin & hair will never recover now its been over 2 years since I stopped taking it..I have neglected to really mention the fatigue, muscle soreness joint pain in my wrists, legs, sleep disturbance, etc etc - but that doesn't bother me nearly as much as all the exterior damage to my person. I would live in pain everyday if I still had normal hair and skin.

Nothing has had any effect at all and I beyond devastated that I am not recovering, even slightly.

I could have hope for the future if I saw even the tiniest improvement but since everything really started drying out in may 2012 I have channeled every resource I have into beating this and I am struggling to stay alive at this point, I have fast lost faith that I am ever going to get better.

I'm very sorry to hear about your situation. I'm a physician assistant student on accutane myself. I'm surprised they had you stay on it for a whole year. I also find it quite strange that the doctors gave you such vague answers- there is clearly something going on that should be dealt with. Even if they can't find the root cause to treat, they should at least be helping you treat the symptoms. I have a hunch about a possibility- could it be your thyroid? Metabolic diseases can be tricky suckers to catch, especially since they present themselves in such different varieties. While some of it could be symptoms leftover from accutane, it's possible that maybe the drug triggered something else. Here's a link for the info about hypothyroidism: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001393/. You definitely have some of the symptoms on that list like the dry hair/hair and depression. When you go to the doctor, he should feel around the base of your neck to see if your thyroid gland is enlarged. Ask for the TSH and T4 blood tests. Maybe ask for a liver test too since you didn't get any for the whole Accutane treatment. If those tests come back positive, celebrate! Hypothyroidism is easy to treat with hormone supplementation, and you'll start to feel better pretty quickly. I hope you solve your mystery!

PS. Is EPO safe/legal to take, or do you have a prescription for that? I just want to make sure because having too many red blood cells puts you at risk for high blood pressure and clots, and those are NO FUN to deal with.

I don't mean to barge in - but if you had 40mg/day, that's actually not as much as me. I'm 80mg/day and only 14 and rather slim. Good luck, I hope I don't get the negative things you got. I hope you feel better, there's always hope.
