Comedogenic: Tending to produce or aggravate acne.

This post lists comedogenic ingredients and products containing those ingredients above a certain threshold. This is the BAD LIST of what to avoid in your skin care products. If you want the good list of non-comedogenic products, see this alternate post.

This is purely informational. I am not making any blanket statements concerning any particular product. Use this post to inform yourself. What you choose to slather on your face is your own business.

Just because something claims to be "non-comedogenic" "non-acnegenic" "oil-free" "dermatologist tested" or "dermatologist approved" does NOT mean the product is free of comedogenic ingredients. These terms are not regulated, and a company can use them however they want. You will find many "non-comedogenic" products that contain the worst offenders on this list!

A major offender is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate...contained in many mainstream cleansers.

Ingredients with a comedogenic rating of 3 or higher are highlighted in red.

But strangely enough, not all products containing comedogenic ingredients lead to breakouts. Among several others, Cetaphil cleanser has been one of my long-time favorites, and my skin is completely clear.

Uh, good for you? Not sure how this contributes to the topic. It's like someone saying "well I eat crap and put crap on my face and I'm skinny and don't have acne." ;) Obviously some people can get away with more comedogenic ingredients than others.

I do agree that certainly Cetaphil is not the worst offender. Many products can be used by acne-prone people even with a few comedogenic ingredients, because of the proportion of ingredients and the interaction with the rest of the formulation. There are negative and positive reviews of Cetaphil on this site's own reviews. But I'm just getting the information out there. It's good to know what could be irritating your skin if you're still breaking out. :)

Well pardon my useless contribution then. The point I'm making (which of course I find to be completely relevant) is that if we exclude every product with a potentially comedogenic ingredient, then we would certainly be missing out on several products that work well without causing breakouts. Your list suggests that 3 of the 4 drugstore cleansers recommended by Dan are unsafe to use due to comedogenic ingredients, and all I'm saying, especially for those trying to follow the regimen, is that just because a product may have a potentially comedogenic ingredient or irritant does not necessarily mean that it is bad to use.

I understand what both of you are trying to say but for some acne prone people their skin is beyooond sensitive. And we're kind of being misled by a lot of labels that claim things are used for "sensitive skin" but they have terribly irritating ingredients.

I personally hate Cetaphil and can somewhat contribute it to my acne getting worse the whole month I was using it. I usually stick things out until the end of the package for 1. I don't waste anything and 2. I want to give every product a fair shot and it takes time to see how well it really can work. But I gave up. I questioned at first why something that's creamy is being used on my acne prone, oily skin.

But that's not to bash on people's cleansers I just wish this were a more positive post. I wish it would list the face washes and masks that were non-comedogenic instead of making me feel like finding a non-comedogenic facial cleanser is hopeless.

If you read the original post, you would see a link at the very top to my other post that lists those exact things. http://www.acne.org/messageboard/index.php/topic/319656-master-100-non-comedogenic-list/

This is AMAZING!!! You are awesome for making this! It would be really cool if you made a shampoo/conditioner one too. I can't find one that doesn't irritate me in some way. Any advice? Again, thanks SO much for these lists. You rock.

The skin one was enough work as it is, so I don't know if I'll ever get around to that...but my personal hair recommendations are the SheaMoisture line and the DevaCare line.

I was thinking about using the SheaMoisture line, actually. My scalp's really dry because I've been using baby shampoo for a while and I'm afraid to try something that's going to break me out. Thanks for the info!

Thanks for posting!! I find it really helpful! It is good to know potential offenders in case you start a new product and breakout--you can backtrack to (hopefully) the reason. Like you said, not all will be a problem for everyone, but it sure gives you something to check into if you happen to notice an increase in outbreaks during a new product. I can use the desert essence face wash with no problems at all..but I cannot touch algae extract! lol I tried a *natural* conditioner from the jason line and anywhere my hair touched I had huge cysts. :( I linked it back to the algae extract and only because I had read a list of potential comodegenic ingredients shortly after and reviewed the conditioner ingredients to find alage extract listed. That was the only way I would have been able to pinpoint. So, thanks again for listing these!!

My personal opinion is that Sodium Lauryl Sulphate and Sodium Laureth Sulphate are great at cleansing and controlling oil. I had the best results with cleansers that contained one or both of these ingredients.

However, my skin is tough as an elephant's, I can count on one hand the number of times that a skincare product caused a reaction, and I've tried more than I can count.

Judging from how much sulphate shampoos dry out my hair though, I can see why it would be bad for people with sensitive skin, as for it being comedogenic, I'm not too sure. I believe it might be comedogenic if you have dry skin.

Ok, here are my questions regarding this thread. I doubt that they have answers but here goes:

1. What are the characteristics of a molecule that can clog your pores? What is it about the molecule that makes it "pore-clogging?

A. Is there a specific size the pore-clogging molecule has to be to be pore clogging? If so, what is that size threshhold?

i. Does the size threshold vary per individual?

B. Or is it that the molecule must have an electric charge?

C. Is there some other characteristic about an ingredient's molecules that make it pore-clogging? If so, what?

2. Is there any proof or evidence that these ingredients clog pores? If so, what evidence?

3. Is there a scientific test that can prove that an ingredient is going to clog your pores? If so, please explain.

4. How can we trust a website that claims that these ingredients are going to clog pores? What evidence do they have to back up their claims? What is the basis of their claims?

5. Will the ingredients clog pores for everyone or just some people?

A. If just some people, why?

Thanks.

Thank you for doing this list, it is absolutely incredible and so useful!!

Perhaps one of the mods would be kind enough to get it pinned somewhere ?

I believe that this list is based on research. (Electric charge has little to do with it. Oils are fairly large nonpolar molecules but NaCl is ionic (very very polar) and smalI. I will describe how research is conducted. We don't have enough resources to test these things for extended periods of time on skin, and testing on human skin takes a lot of paperwork and hoop-jumping, so research is often conducted on rabbit ears. A product is applied in large amounts and/or with large frequency to the rabbit ear. Development of pimples is observed. Obviously, this is not the ideal way of testing whether something is comedogenic, but it is the most cost effective.

Some products earn a comedogenic reputation through other ways, such as human research or observation of dermatologists. This is a study on the comedogenicity of human sebum http://archderm.jama...rticleid=531776 . It may give you some information as to the size of particles that are comedogenic. It is not just about particle size however. Irritants can often cause acne as well. Acne is often and inflammatory condition. If you can't access the article above, it is referenced here: http://books.google....n sebum&f=false

Here is a more recent book on acne if you are interested: http://books.google....d=0CEIQ6AEwATgK Use it as a starting point and then start looking at the research. You should find your own answers. It is good that you are asking these questions!

Also, there is something you should know about studies and statistics. I highly advise taking a course in biological statistics before looking at research. If you don't know how research is analyzed and done, it can be very misleading. That is why several studies must be conducted to conclude whether something is or isn't comedogenic. Furthermore, you must be able to determine whether a study is well designed.

I recommend this book: [Edited link out]

Either find it used on amazon or rent it. If you are actually interested in answering your questions, it will take a few months, because we spent a semester (3.5 months) studying this book in my STAT class to understand it. However, just reading the book through and doing practice problems should be sufficient for a working understanding of studies and how they are analyzed/conducted.

Cocamide and all of its derivatives (such as Cocamidopropyl Betaine) should also be added to the list. It can be more allergenic than even SLS. And, like SLS, it is in most shampoos.

I would suggest adding Shiseido "Pureness" line products. Many camedonic ingredients, fragrances, colourants... If only I knew that the ingredients matter, when I was younger! Using these products I had the most terrible breakout in my life at the age of 19.

Wow, thanks for this. I just threw away the majority of my facial cleansers I use argan oil for a moisturizer, but can anyone recommend a face wash?

Sage facial shampoo, glytone, boots sensitive foaming, and free & clear are a couple. I personally like the sage facial shampoo, but it's expensive.
