Can Topical Retinoids Alone Prevent Indented Scarring?

I have an existing dark red mark on my forehead, as well as a decent-sized, inflammed cyst that's reached the "head" stage. I'm wondering if starting a topical retinoid might help prevent both areas from turning into an indented scar.

The red mark has already been there for several weeks, so I'm not sure if topical treatment alone would be too little, too late. My other option is to try an antibiotic. (I've not taken any antibiotics for acne in at least 13 years, or so. But I'm feeling a little desperate to avoid another indented scar.)

Thank you,
