Just Trying To Find My Way.....a Holistic Approach To Acne

Recommended Posts

You got a reaction from aloe vera? What did it look like?

I'm sorry to hear that you're trying so hard but I hope you never give up on finding the right regimen for you.

I don't know if you've ever tried a colon or liver cleanse before but I've heard great things about that and your digestive and skin health.

I always feel like no one would read a log I'd have but maybe I should start one up :P

My skin looks much better than months ago but I must say after changing my regimen so many times it seems to tick my skin off and I get acne in places I never have before or different types of acne. Very obnoxious.

Are you still using ACV as a face wash or the Elina Organics one listed on your signature?

Also, I've just picked up some Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisturizer for sensitive skin and I'm not sure what to think of it. I think it's not very moisturizing but I think it's because it's for people with oily skin like me. I like Olay's complete moisturizer for sensitive skin. I use it for my tattoo that I just got also. It's super moisturizing but not greasy.

Thanks for reading! I think you should definitively start a log...i would definitely read it. I am using the Elina Organics as my face wash and i like it. ACV as a toner has been ok.....not sure if i will keep it though as i am breaking out in small red bumps on the side of my face - note sure if this is purging from ACV or it is my skins reaction from being off the Acanya. In any event, my acne is getting worse day by day. I hate the Neutrogena as it makes my skin sooooo much more oilier but not using moisturizer makes my skin itch so i'm damn if i do, damn if i don't. When i tried the aloe vera, it made all the areas itch and reddish so i won't be trying it out on my face.

Thanks for the support and kind words. I am mega frustrated but i know it will take time.....trial and error right? I am so happy that you are doing much better with your regimen. Any advice on what i can do to treat my active acne while i wait for my body to balance itself out?

You're just so sweet and I just made a blog :P Hopefully I can help others and they can help me.

I've never heard of someone getting a reaction from aloe vera.. hmph. Well it's not that moisturizing anway and it makes your face feel tight if you know what I mean.

Have you tried honey, lemon, or egg masks? I also am madly in love with this super cheap clay face mask.. which is a little bit scary to us the first time. It's pretty darn hard to get off, but with the help of Olay ProX little face scrubber it makes it easier to get off and trust me the redness dies down after about 15 minutes. It also makes your face feel like it's pulsating but it is the deepest clean I have ever felt.

Here's the link, I bought mine on Amazon and hey it's worth a shot, right?

http://www.amazon.com/Aztec-Secret-Indian-Healing-Clay/dp/B0014P8L9W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1344030975&sr=8-1&keywords=clay+mask

I use mine with ACV because it's supposed to work better. I also leave mine on for a half hour. It's kind of fun to watch it fizz and stir it up haha but I'm kind of a nut. :P

Also steaming your face with a towel over your head and over a semi-boiling pot of water for 10 minutes before applying any mask makes it work even better and purge your pores of any crud. I know acne isn't just dirt but keeping it clean makes it heal SOOO much faster.

When you first used it, did your acne get worse? What is your acne like? I'm just afraid to purge and to keep purging and never stop so.......Can you send me the link to your blog? It seems many people start natural blogs but never keep up with them - it then defeats the whole purpose of helping each other out.

Many years ago i did it with water only - didn't work out so well. I definitely think my acne has more to do with internal issues versus what i put on my skin as i have been on topicals, off topicals and i still have acne. Diet for me has not appeared to help but i plan to eat healthy anyhow. I am now following a program with a holistic doctor to deal with possible underlying issues such as liver, yeast, digestion etc.

the first couple of weeks are a bummer, as all those old deep pores release those nasty trapped particles, some people it requires more time, and some people have better success without water even. but its not for everyone...how long did you try it for? i know a lot of people want to try it but they just dont have the time or patience to. the first couple of weeks suck, but its a pay off in the end. good luck with the approach

My face hurts me something fierce. All these inflamed bumps hurt when i make any facial expression - could really cry right now. My chin looks and feels terrible and the sad part is i know this is NOT the worst of it. These under the skin bumps bite the big one. I just want then to come to a head so that the can heal. I tried an Epson Salt mask last night as several people says it helps clear out the toxicity out of skin and lets bumps heal. I plan to do this for a week in hopes of speeding up the process. I won't be adding in anything else to my facial regimen for now.

In the meantime, i am breaking out all over - forehead included. How do people stay positive when things continue to get worse and worse.....could use some emotional encouragement here.

How does the epsom salt mask work exactly and how often can you use it? Irritating your skin and cleansing it too much can make you break out like crazy.

My skin has been pretty unpredictable since age 10 or 11. My parents had acne and I was a ticking time bomb. I mostly have white heads around my chin and nose occasionally, blackheads covering most of my nose and a couple on my cheeks from time to time. And worst of all I have those giant bumps, the nasty ones you can't get rid of that hurt real bad like you were talking about. I only get a couple of these but man they suck!

I seriously haven't been eating well, been drinking and smoking, and my skin looks fantastic today. I really contribute it to washing my face just at night and splashing cold water on it in the morning. Hey, my face is already clean, right? I don't know honestly my skin makes absolutely no sense to me.

I know you'll make it through this with a clear face soon! Keep your positive attitude and I didn't have any sort of purging with the mask. It honestly is just perfect.

I just dissolve epsom salt in hot water and when it cools, i pat on my face and leave it for 15 minutes before washing it off. It supposedly draws out the impurity so acne can heal faster. I do it everyday (no scrubbing involved). It's not irritating at all - i guess i'll give it about a week and see how it works out. What are some signs of irritation i should be looking out for?

So glad to hear you are doing so well!!!!! Please keep your log updated as i am definitely following along. Your acne sounds a bit like mine except mine is a little worse off i believe. I may give the mask a try if the Epsom Salt doesn't work out.

DAY # 13

Don't you just HATE blind pimples. I have 2 on either side of my jaw that started out as teeny tiny flesh colored bumps but have turned into huge monsters. I just want to hide my face. This is in addition to the dozens of regular and underground pimples i have. It is weird not using an acne medication because i have no assurance that tomorrow will be better. It's amazing to me how you can go to bed wit no visible pimple or a tiny one and wake up with a whopper.....acne is sure one of those mysteries of the universe.

In regards to my chin, still breaking out, its getting bad and will most likely get inflamed. Skin looks ROUGH! Forehead has tiny bumps that are not bothering me too much and cheeks seemed to not be so clogged so that's improvement.

I have my follow up with the holistic derm in about 3 weeks so we'll see where we go from here. Still incorporating new supplements and should be complete with that by next week Wednesday. The more time goes on, the more convinced i am that food is NOT my biggest issue as i eat the same menu and my acne is both better and worse. Hoping these supplements help to fix the underlying cause of my acne because diet alone is not doing it.

Will check back in few days

Thanks for reading!

UPDATE: by the way, one of those blind pimples looks like it is turning into a cyst.....shitcry.gif

Hey! I went AWOL from the org for a few months (some people here annoy the shit outta me), but I just caught up with your log. I relate to the feeling like you are doing everything right and still have acne. And I relate to messing up my regimen, not eating right, and randomly NOT breaking out. WTF?

My skin WAS doing really well since I started using a topical zinc cream (my tummy can't tolerate any zinc supplement). I ran out and forgot to get more from the compound pharmacy, and it kinda went to shit again. Right now my forehead is clear and right side is clear. 2 spots on my left cheek and one super-inflamed cyst on my chin that went down with some ice. I also have the tiny flash colored bump on my left chin below the corner of my mouth that totally has the potential of becoming something huge and horrible.

I use Aczone for actives, but it doesn't work as well as it used to. What I have noticed helps with cysts... and this might sound scary... is Arnica Oil. People use it to help get blood flow to bruises to heal them faster. I read in an ayurvedic book that it can help cysts because it helps them drain. I dab a bit on my finger and run it on the cyst until it absorbs. I use the OCM, so putting oil on my face isn't scary to me.

Since I use OCM, I don't usually need a moisturizer, but if I do, I alternate between aloe and Derma E Pycnogenol Redness Reducing Serum. It has great reviews on MyMakeupAlley:

http://www.makeupall...-E/Moisturizers

I also struggle with depression, I can't help but think that depression and acne are related. Not "I have acne, so I am depressed", but I notice when I am most depressed, I break out the worst. Can't be a coincidence. I think my depression is more PMDD, and the breakouts are hormonal. Do you notice any corrilation between your breakouts and your cycle? I stated tracking all of my PMDD symptoms in an app, so I knew when my depression was coming on and when my acne might be coming on. It helped to feel like I was in control if I could tell when shit was about to hit the fan.

All in all, you are doing the right stuff. I was really frustrated with my naturopath at first, but I ended up seeing results. Like you said, it's so sloooooow. But I hope you stick with it and get great results!

Thanks for checking in and the reassurance! I really need it this week. I've been sick and my acne is worse, with cyst and all (something that is not the norm for me). I don't notice a change in the severity of my acne and my cycle so i don't know what the 'funk' is going on with my skin. I break out continuously - everyday in fact so i can't pinpoint one action/mechanism to my breakouts.

You are so right about the natural approach- it is slow and so freaking expensive but hey, if it works it works, besides, what other options do we have....right. I am glad your naturopath is working out for you. How long were you with her before you saw continuous improvement? This will be my third naturopath/holistic person so lets just say i am VERY skeptical. This guy has over 20 years of experience and he is a licensed derm so go figure.

Depression and acne are so related.....one definitely feeds into the other. When my acne is better, i feel less depressed and i am less reclusive, when my acne is bad like it is now, i isolate myself and the cycle starts again. How is your depression at the moment?

Still working on a skin care regimen - what zinc cream are you using. How does it help your face -would love to look into it more.

I'm experimenting with epsom salt and a green tea toner. As for moisturizer, seeing how my face does without it for a while (though it will probably make things worse - what else is new)

As you can see, i am in a pessimistic state of mind.

I know what you mean about some people on here with their rudeness and down right know it all attitude - i hate it but i learn to ignore. But in any event, being away from the org has hopefully giving you an opportunity to focus on something else beside your acne.

Thanks again for checking in - will check out your blog to get more info

That's exactly what I was doing, just taking a break so I could focus on something other than my skin. And it was doing better there for a few months, so I didn't feel the need to be on as much. That's a bummer that you don't get a respite from your acne. It seems like I get a pew pimples at once, and by the time they are healed I develop new ones. I have been keeping track of my cycle and symptoms and I know I get acne: Day 4-5, Day 12-15 and Day 21-27 of my cycle. These days also sync up with my depression/PMDD. I think whatever causes me to be depressed also makes me break out. I get depressed before I break out, for me the depression is almost a warning sign that acne is coming. So weird!

I see my naturopath for depression, not acne. We are trying to balance my hormones to stabilize my moods. I saw improvement within the first 3 months, but it took about a year before I was like "Okay, if I can just be this way for the rest of my life, I will be fine". That said, what she has me on for depression has made my acne worse. I am supporting progesterone with a herbal tincture, and hence am breaking out more. She said if I were seeing her to JUST treat acne, she would go about things differently. But treating the depression is more important. Right now I am feeling really good. I didn't have a major crash around my last period which is a freaking miracle. I get better and better with each cycle. I can't wait until I can ween off of some of the expensive meds and see the doc less often. I really need to save $.

I have used ACV and tea toner, I like it. I am a vegetarian, mostly vegan, so I need the zinc supplementation. Zinc oxide is supposed to be good for skin, but the cream I have is actually absorbed into the skin so it can give you your daily dose of zinc. Lots of people on here reported zinc supplements helping the acne, but I always got nauseous when I took it (even on a full stomach). It's made at a compounding pharmacy, per my doc's Rx. I'm not sure if they make the absorb-able kind OTC.

If you are interested, this is the thread I had going for my story: http://www.acne.org/messageboard/index.php/topic/311529-estrogen-dominance-treatment-making-acne-worse/

I sorta gave up on it because I became a broken record and I didn't feel like people understood my problem. But that might give you some insight into my doc's approach. Hope you are feeling better soon :)

DAY # 15

I haven't broken out this bad in a loooooooong time. I really want to cry. That cyst on my right jaw is big and seems to be getting bigger. It has taken on a red/purple color and even though i see a tiny whitehead, it is not a big enough for this cysts to drain itself. I am doing hot saline compresses so that it can come to head sooner as it is painful. I haven't had one of those in over a year.

I also broke out heavily on my chin in under the skin pimples i have stopped the epsom salt paste as it may have irritated my skin to that point. I coincidentally started using a green tea toner with epsom salt which may be less irritating on my skin so i may as well continue with this to see if it helps - my skin has gone to shit anyway.

I emailed my holistic derm and he couldn't tell me if this was a detox or not but he wants me to come in next week with my supplements and common foods so that he can test them on me. I really hope i dont have to go because i can't afford it but if things continue to be bad, i will have to find the money somehow.

I am discouraged and sad. Sometimes i wonder whats the point of trying

Ugh, I am so sorry! I absolutely know how you feel. You don't deserve this, you are doing so well!

This might be a Hail Mary, and I don't know what I think about it, but I ran across this today:

http://www.thelovevitamin.com/3452/fermented-cod-liver-oil/

I try to be vegetarian as much as possible, but I might ask my doc about this and give it a shot.

DAY # 19

So this week has not been off to a bad start but neither has it been off to a good start. I started using Hemp Seed Oil as a moisturizer and i think it may either be:

1)breaking me out

OR

2)bringing the gunk up and out.

I am breaking out in small bumps in areas that i already had underground acne. I am also getting tiny flesh colored bumps on my cheeks

The comodogenic and irritation rating is 0 so technically it's not supposed to clog pores so.........

I however have decided to discontinue use for now.

I have also decided to stop the green tea toner as it was drying out my skin. I will resume using my ACV toner and most likely my neutrogenia moisturizer.

Supplements wise, i think my body has somewhat adjusted to them. They don't appear to be helping but then again its only been 3 weeks so..........

This whole natural skin care things is definitely testing my resolve and patience.

That was the one thing i liked about going to a derm....they tell you what to do, you do it, guess work gone.

I really hate this.

@4FOURS - yes, the derm is trying to cover his basis. Not sure if he can help me though. I've been to 2 other naturopaths and no success so......

DAY # 25

So i stopped paleo and started eating quinoa grains again. I have lost so much weight and muscle mass despite upping fat and protein. Just generally felt like shit. I like the whole concept of it but after 3 months and no change, well, decided it wasn't worth it. I may at some point try to give it a shot again though. As for skin care still only cleansing and moisturizing. Haven't really examined my face in the mirror so can't say how bad i am breaking out ATM. Getting a facial tomorrow so we'll see how that works out. Hoping these supplements kick in soon though as skin care is obviously not doing it for me. Will probably at some point have to go to derm and get something for the face as this trial and error on my face is stressing me out more than anything.

Had a great day today though in spite of my acne.

Hey Sasch!

Saw this in the new content, figured I'd follow your log! Having been in similar boats in regards to picking and learning to cope with stress, I feel like we could relate and help each other out! I'm gonna start up a log again too. One of the best tools against acne is having people you can vent to about how you feel when it comes to acne struggles, for sure.

So what's your topical regimen look like now? I plan to read through your blog, but just in case it's not posted, what kinds of tests did the naturopath run?

So what's your topical regimen look like now? I plan to read through your blog, but just in case it's not posted, what kinds of tests did the naturopath run?

Hey Tim! Feel free to follow along....the more interactive, the better. If you decide to start your own blog, i'm so there. Support is a big thing. It gets all the negativity out versus having it fester in us and lead to what else....more stress.

My topical regimen.....ha.....non-existent ATM. i had a facial today and it was awesome. She was so sweet and understanding and i finally found out what type of skin i have (oily on forehead and cheek, extremely dry on chin). What i loved most about it is that she did not sell me products. She said she wanted to wait and see how my skin reacted to the products she used today (she'll be checking up on me via email). If all goes well, then she said i could come back in a month for a facial geared more towards acne and get products.

She recommended i keep using my organic cleanser (which she liked but said it would do nothing for my acne - at least it wouldn't irritate it) and neutrogena (she hated this moisturizer but didn't want me to change anything as of yet). That is gonna be my regimen for a while.

What about you? What's your regimen like and how's it controlling your acne.

My naturopath does muscle testing where they'll place their hand on a part of your body and have you lift one hand. They'll then use their other hand to push down on the hand that is lifted. If you have a hard time matching their pressure then that means that that particular body part is suffering. They do the same procedure to test actual supplements.

I'm skeptical about the whole process but hey.....i've tried the conventional way and it did nothing much for me so why not try something else. The naturopath i have is actually licensed as a derm but i found him useless in terms of providing me with a skin care routine (how ironic). But in any event, this is a long term process so i can't dismiss him until i've been doing this for a few months.

Ahhh...the joys of having acnecheer.gif

Ahhhh.....i could scream. So as expected (but i was hoping this wouldn't be the case). My face is breaking out more in the usual spots. I read that facials stimulate the skin so all the gunk will come up......and it has. This is why it is hard for me to determine what products break me out because everyday i break out in pimples WTH. So frustrating. I was surprised to get some acne on my lip because that's not the norm (it does happen though). Nothing i can do about it though as my face is extremely acne prone. Will just have to plough through the shit like everyone else. Trying to not get anxious over it as it's not gonna help.

DAY # 31

I am this close to giving up on this holistic thing. My face is a mess and my acne is spreading. I am once again getting cysts. I am definitely discouraged. I keep telling myself that this may be a detox but i'm not so sure.

I go back to my holistic derm on Thursday so we'll see what he says. I definitely realize that quitting topicals cold turkey was a bad bad bad idea. in any event, i will be speaking with the derm on thursday about a skin care routine and if he can't help, i will go to a regular derm and ask for something.

I knew this wasn't going to be an easy process but i never imagined things would go to shit this fast. Has anyone else experienced the 'it gets worse before it gets better' stage when going natural? How long did it take to see some improvement.

Still don't know what my root cause is......this is what makes healing my body so difficult

Will report back on Thursday
