Ortho Tricyclen Log - Staying Positive!

Recommended Posts

In the past, I was on Tricyclen for 2 years. I remember having mood swings, being very tired, and having bad breakouts for 2-3 months, and then clearing up except when I got really stressed in school/work.

I went off it for a few months, and have re-started. I'm on Week 6. I remember that every time I start a new pack, the second row of pills (0.215mg) makes me break out like mad, and makes my mood swings even worse....I cry for no reason (well, mostly about acne, but I normally wouldn't cry about it) and get really angry at mundane things.

I know that I can stay on it and get clear again quite soon (hopefully in 3-6 weeks!) but I think it'll help to log the progress so that I can keep track of when I am happier with my skin.

Other things I am doing:

- cutting wheat from my diet (and cutting back on dairy)

- using Peter Thomas Roth cleanser (glycolic acid), Dr. Brandt moisturizer (Blemish No More), Peter Thomas Roth Oxygenating Serum twice a day

- using Murad skin lightener at night, but mostly for slight hyperpigmentation

- drinking plenty of water and green tea

- trying to reduce stress!

Please let me know if any of you have had this same effect with the 0.215mg Tricyclen pills! It's really weird!

This gives me hope because I started a month ago and this birth control pill has given me the worst initial breakout out of 2 other brands I've been on....

Yeah, I was worried he first time too. But it ended up working quite well for me, and I can already tell that it is working the second time around. There is just the one week where I break out....and it was really bad the first month, but it's not as bad now that I'm on the second month!

Good luck!!

Yep, for most of my two years. When I got stressed or went to bed without washing my face I would get maybe one or two pimples, but for the most part I was clear. When I had no stress, I was totally clear!! Can't wait to get back there!

the second row of pills (0.215mg) makes me break out like mad,

by the way, this same thing has been happening to me!!! what the heck, I've only been on it for 2 months, but it's the second week of the 2nd pack, and my face just exploded 1-2 days ago, same thing like last month, second week of the 1st pack.......and then it calms down towards the sugar pill week..........my face hurts so bad right now!

Yeah, my second month and my second time taking this pill. I'm happy that it's bearable!! (It's still worse than most of the time I'm off the pill completely....but it's nice to be regular and protected from pregnancy, too.)

@calichick - mine calms down the day I start taking the 0.250mg pills... it's so weird, it's almost like an overnight change...suddenly it all starts getting better, except for maybe one or two pimples.

Right now I'm sort of embarrassed about my face... got a big pimple beside my nose and a few small ones scattered around my jaw and cheeks... mild hyperpigmentation as usual....it's mostly the dry skin that's bugging me though. Winter!!!

Tomorrow's my last day on these 0.215mg pills so it should soon get better!

You're gonna hate this answer (I know I do!) but it's different for everyone.

For me, however, it was about 3 months the first time, if I remember correctly.

This time, I'm not sure, but it's getting better...I'm six weeks in and it's been bearable for the last 2...not great, but bearable...

Okay so I'm confused on the months. You cleared up on the third month or pack? That that the same thing because I'm on my second pack but technically it's my 1.5 month. Or is that considered my second month? Because my second month mark is in december...

the third pack is the third month, from the first pack is the first month you started the pill...so 3 packs until she was clear...

I'm in the Dominican Republic now, and I guess it's a combination of hormones, humidity, sunshine, and wearing makeup more often (people are ALWAYS around) but my skin is freaking out. I am trying to enjoy my holiday but this is the worst I've ever seen it. I feel very shitty about it.... got lots of hyperpigmentation on cheeks and then tons of small pimples all around my jaw and a few on my cheeks........I just want to come home so it goes somewhat back to normal. :(:(

It's all good. I had a great vacation and now I'm home. It just sucks that it seems to affect you at the worst possible times, hey?!

The plane rides don't help, either. I always come off planes with more acne than when I got on.

It's drier here in Vancouver and I'm already noticing the difference. I'm at that awkward stage where it's drying out the pimples nicely, but it looks weird to put makeup over because it's so dry. I'm optimistic that it will go away in the next few days though...just gotta keep it as clean as possible.

I'm on the sugar pills on my second month so we'll see how it goes. It's been difficult to decipher the effect that the pills have been having on me because I've been away, but now that I'm home, I will get back on track here.

The sugar pills are usually when things calm down a bit(: I heard something about planes causing break outs? Maybe it's the air or something

I can absolutely vouch for that. Planes are deadly.....especially when mixed with crazy hormones, lack of sleep (due to late flight and jet lag), etc. This flight was 8 hours long, so I'm going to basically blame that.

Agreed. I find that sugar pills and week 1 (and usually week 3, but this time I was in a totally different climate) are good times for the skin. It's week 2 that usually makes me want to hide away forever!!

I'm nervous because I'm going on exchange to Prague, Czech Republic next semester....quite a long flight away from Vancouver. I have such high expectations for this trip, because I'm going to be visiting many other European countries as well. This has always been a dream for me and I want it to be perfect. I will be heartbroken if acne ruins it after all the time and money I've already put into it.

Do you need to be referred to a derm by your doctor?! I want to before I go. I'm fairly certain that my acne is hormonal (mostly) so there's not a lot that can be done, but I am going to try to get my hands on Accutane. Doubt they'll give it to me; my acne is usually fairly mild to moderate, but I really want it. I know it's bad for me but it can't be worse than losing out on LIFE because I'm always worrying about it.

basically just week two haha. I guess its something about the air? Maybe because it's not fresh or something? Try to not wear make up on the flight and see if that helps...

honestly I may get crap for this but my mom got it for me online.... Its working and is legit. I'm very pleased with the results (:

Yeah!! I've been home over a week and my face cleared right up. I started month three (YAY ---> stable???) 3 days ago and I'm very happy. I also started using a new Peter Thomas Roth cleanser and acne spot treatment.

I finish this semester on Monday which means no more stress...so that will help too :)

Ladies,

I am ecstatic to report that I've done it! I'm clear. Even when the going gets tough with this pill, stick with it. There will be shitty times, but I can assure you that this is worth all of that.

I'm on the first week of my THIRD pack, and my face has looked and felt great for a few days. I'll let you guys know what else I've been doing to achieve this result:

Morning - cleanse with Peter Thomas Roth Beta Hydroxy 2% Acne Wash (works like a dream)

- moisturize with Cetaphil daily facial cleanser (SPF 15)

- use a foundation primer before applying makeup (I've used both Bare Escentuals and Laura Mercier, both work great)

- take ortho tricyclen!

During the day - drink LOTS of water

- drink green tea!!

- eat lots of fruit, cut back on wheat (not sure if this has an effect but not about to change ANYTHING right now)

Before bed - Cleanse with PTH Acne cleanser again

- moisturize with Cetaphil SPF 50 (This one is a bit heavier and I find it to be a great overnight moisturizer)

- use Murad age spot lightener for minor hyperpigmentation (amazing!)

I know these products are expensive, but the bottom line is THEY WORK. So it depends how highly you value clear skin. Good luck to you all!!

Congrats Katrina...I am also on my first week of the 3rd pack and my skin looks good, but I'm not clear. Hopefully the second week doesn't bring horrible breakouts...
