Face Itchy, Red And Eyes Swollen From The Regimen

I used the Regimen for the second time this morning before school. My face was itchy the whole day and I kept scratching around my eye and jaw area. I just woke up from a nap and now both my eyes are mildly swollen and a little bit of redness around my face. I'm thinking it might be the BP. Anyone else had this problem? What should I do?

Make sure that you are very gentle and avoid the whole eye area. If you were to put on a pair of Aviator Sunglasses, that's around the size that I like to avoid when it comes to any step in The Regimen. That might help the eye problem. Other than that, make sure that you are using a small amount at first. Your skin needs to adjust to the BP. At first it will irritate the skin, but that will go away within a few weeks. BUT, if you're having a major swelling or major breakout, I would stop and check with your Doctor to be on the safe side. Never know, might be allergic?

But if I were to bet money, it's just your skin getting used to the BP and just make sure you avoid the eye area. Wash your hands in between steps and just make sure to keep the eye area clear of the wash/treatment/even moisturizer. Good Luck!

Yes, agree with Chococrit, make sure you completely avoid the eye area and especially when you are putting on your moisturiser after the BP, its so easy to accidently push it closer to your eye area. I found in my first week of the regimen it made my eyes red and itchy. I think I was touching my face during the day (a bad habit i have) and then rubbing my eyelids and so putting some BP there accidently. It doesnt seem to happen so much now, and i'm up to week 6 so my skin is completely used to it.

Make sure that you're starting really slowly and then building up....

STOP USING IT!!!! That reaction is your body's way of saying that it's allergic to The Regimen. Benzoyl Peroxide is VERY STRONG and can really damage skin - trust me, I've used it many times and not only does it increase the chances of hyperpigmentation but it also causes dryness, flaking skin and in your case, itchiness and swelling. You should NOT be having this reaction to Benzoyl Peroxide.

The CLASSIC sign that you are allergic to something is that you itch and swell. PLEASE stop using those products before you make your skin worse! Try seeing a Chinese herbal specialist and using natural face washes, like lime and tomato or like a mask of turmeric. Herbs are natural and don't have these sorts of side effects. Herbs are the ONLY thing which has worked for me in three years of battling terrible, painful cystic acne, folliculitis and eczema on my face (which came about as a result of both Gardasil and Minocin). I learned the hard way, girl - I used Benzaclin, Duac, Benzamycin, BP 10% wash, you name it, I've tried it. Go a less abrasive route - trust, harsh chemicals WILL NOT make it better but will make your face worse in the long run.

Skinny, I had the same reaction as the original poster but my skin is almost completely clear now. I no longer get red, itchy or flakey and I use BP twice a day.

Let's not jump to conclusions.

As mentioned above, avoid the eye area!

How is that jumping to a conclusion? Your face is itchy, swollen, red....ummm those are ALL classic signs of an allergic reaction. That is not a normal thing. I would advise that girl to stop using that stuff. I know it didn't work for me, at all.

Just because BP didn't work for you, doesn't mean that it won't work for anyone else.

There's other factors that could cause swelling, particularly around the eye area. Itchiness and redness are just but a few of normal side effects that you would expect with BP, especially for the first couple of weeks.

If you touch the area on your face where you have applied BP, and then touch your eye, the chances of transferring unabsorbed BP to the eye area are quite likely. Not in all persons, but some. Some people have a more sensitive touch to BP than others. These people just need to be more aware and careful. It's common sense.

The eye area is extremely sensitive, and BP should be applied a safe distance from the eye area where the skin is more tolerable.

Redness and itchiness are just a few side effects which you have to deal with during the initial stages. Side effects will begin to calm down once your skin becomes adapted to the chemical - which could be anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, dependant on your skin type.

What percentage of BP are you using OP? 2.5% is the preferred amount. 5% and 10% concentrations could be a bit harsh on the skin. Double check this.

What brand of BP are you using? Some brands ie, PanOxyl can be more harsher than others.

If symptoms get worse however, and if swelling increases then as skinny stated, it could be an allergic reaction. But it's early days yet.

Yup, my eyes were definitely red and itchy and sometimes swollen off and on in the first couple of weeks, but that has all stopped now. Its a good idea to give the regimen a good go before packing it in.

As an example of my own experience, on around day 8 of starting the regimen, I went round to see my parents and my mum freaked out when she saw me, saying that I should stop it immediately because look at the state of my face (all swollen, red with itchy eyes), but thankfully I didnt and now I have almost clear completely clear skin and no longer have any of the above symptoms.

As avenger says though, its important to gauge your symptoms to ensure that they arent getting progressively worse, but expect a bit of suffering in the early stages to gain the benefits later.

Saw that you updated your post and I wanted to add more to what I already posted.

PLEASE don't scratch or rub your eyes/face when using BP. That is going to get the product into your eyes and spread it to the sensitive areas around the eyes. This is most likely the cause of your swelling in this area. Like I mentioned before, make sure that when you apple the BP AND moisturizer that you are clear of the ear area. You want to be as far away from them as possible. Don't rub or touch your face afterwards. (That's probably the number one reason for the eye problem, spreading of the BP).

Redness, itching and flakes are all common side effects of BP. Your skin is telling you that it is not used to the BP and it's going to be irritated for the first few weeks. (Normal). Make sure to start slow and only apply a small amount to build up the BP.

As I stated before...if the swelling becomes too much. If you get a very bad rash or even blisters. STOP. Go the the doctor because you may be allergic to the product.

Stick with it for a little longer and make sure you're taking it slow and you keep those hands AWAY from your face. No more touchie touchie! Hope this helps. Good Luck!

You've developed an allergy to BP. Stop using it.

Many people experience extreme dryness, flakiness, and redness when they start with a benzoyl peroxide product. This is why it is vital that you start with a very small amount and only apply it once per day, being super careful to avoid the eye area with both the BP and any moisturizer you put on over the BP. Over a period of a few weeks, for the vast majority of people, the dryness, flakiness, and redness will subside. However, in extremely rare occasions, allergy can exist and is evidenced by "severe crusting" and "swelling." See this FAQ for more.

My only question about avoiding the eye area totally is that I have extremely dry and sensitive skin around my eyes, atsome point during the day I do need to moisturise them. How/ When should this be done? Thanks

If you need to, just be really careful when you do it. Leave a nice clear big circle around each eye when applying benzoyl peroxide. Then, when you're moisturizing the eye area later, just stay well inside that circle.

For me it's the facewash that gets my eyes very red and irritated to the point where they are becoming flaky. Almost as if it was aczema I've been using this products for years now and just recently this started happening I've read other post from other ppls and apperanlty I'm not the only one.
